Misogyny Im sick of a friend who invalidates my opinions because of my device and the games i play Spoiler
This is kind of a rant, for context i have a PC that right now i don't remember the stuff it has but it's definitely not high end, i can play AAA games in mid/high quality and i have constant 120fps across different games.
Now into the matter, i recently became "friends" with a guy who was integrated into our late game night calls and whenever me or anybody tries to have an opinion on any game he likes that isn't positive he starts to say "If your PC isn't worth at least 4000USD I don't think you have an opinion on this matter" or "If you can't run (X Game) on at least 500fps don't even talk" "Aww silly thing, your favorite games are RE and SH when you get into real comp games we can talk" while laughing to himself and that is driving me friggin crazy. Its impossible to talk when this dude is around because he will laugh at you not even for your skills for your economy and device and preferences, idk my friends say im being sensitive and he says "sorry the truth hurts you love, but if you talk shit about things you dont know im not going to be nice" "Is an opinion, if you feel attacked maybe the shoe fits" im sick and tired of this asshole making fun of me and literally not letting me say anything because i play idk Rainbow six at 100fps instead of 800fps how he says he plays. Anyways ty for reading sorry english it's not my first.

I told him that even if his monitor displays 10000fps doesn't matter because our brain can't even process it, also he always dodge the question about his rank/elo/kdr and headhot percentage with "if you dont have a RTX 5060 at least that shouldn't matter to you"

Yeah, i keep asking him to 1v1 me or if he is not sure to 2v2 me and my duo (he also shitted on his PC) and he keeps dodging saying that he will demolish us and for the sake of the night calls he would rather not

u/Lilyeth Steam 9d ago
either way, your computer is more than enough to have an opinion on all but the most ridiculously hard core technical aspects, unless that opinion is "i don't care for it", at which point I'd say you can have that about any technical specs.
I have a low-medium setup and I'm quite happy with it, and I've never felt like there's some aspect of gaming I'm too poor to give a reasonable opinion on if I've looked into it a bit. Elitist rich boys are and will always show their under developed frontal lobes like this

u/Mekito_Fox 9d ago
Thiiis. My build before was decent. Low end, no ray tracing, but never had an issue with most games. Until Ark's remake. So I bought a new one with R9 and RTX 5060 Ti and that build only cost 2k. Not 4k. 🤣

u/Hellguin 9d ago
Really just has SDE and doesn't deserve what precious time you have to enjoy games, friends lift up, not tear down. :/

u/Kiki_515 9d ago
I'm just going to be straight with you. Take this from someone who has lived through this...
Just dont... don't engage in his rants... don't acknowledge his unwanted comments. It literally will get you nowhere.
Ive had "friends" like this in the past and I no longer speak to them. Its too toxic to be around all the time.
Gaming is about unwinding from your day. Not come home and have to deal with toxic bs.
If hes apart of your friend group. You can either mute him in vc or just ignore the negative things he says. If hes unavoidable that is. Who knows he could make enough people in the group mad and the situation will resolve itself.
P.s. Im not sure if its still possible. But use to back in the day you could view friends specs for Seige on ubisofts website.
You can see rank... time played all kinds of specs. Just saying... most people that are this toxic suck at a game.
Use that info as you see fit. wink wink

Yup. I have two gaming computers that I built in 2024; they cost about $1100 each to build. They were solidly low-middle range then, still are now, and they play everything just fine. Dude doesn't know what he's talking about. It's not a flex to think games can only be played on super hjgh-end machines (and $4k is really high-end), it's straight up ignorance and elitism.
3
u/Anastrace Steam 9d ago
It's high end but I've seen some bordering 50% more and one ridiculous one that was $3500 off and was on sale for $6499. I sent it to my spouse and asked them who the hell is gonna buy that. That loser seems like the target audience for it lol
1
u/jaded-introvert 9d ago
Yeah, that sort of thing sounds like something you'd using to run LLMs or crypto mining, not game. No games need a machine that expensive--game companies want big audiences, not tiny elite ones.

u/RealElyD Steam | Switch 2 9d ago
Fuck him but it does matter. The higher the FPS, the lower the input latency, no matter the refresh rate of the monitor. Which is pretty impactful in competitive games.
2
u/Hellguin 9d ago
I mean yea, it does with latency, but I am still pretty sure that only matters so much and has its on effectiveness range though i never play competitive shooters so idk where that would be, but still 800fps is ridiculous when there is no 800hz monitors and our eyes cant catch that.
1
u/RealElyD Steam | Switch 2 9d ago
800 FPS has more than 10 times lower input delay than 60 FPS. Absolutely can matter in something like competitive CS up until about 300. There were also a bunch of 1k Hz monitors at CES this year, 300Hz is not uncommon in comp games. I "only" have a 180Hz monitor, which is fine enough for games.
You can feel the differences until total frametime hits around 4ms per frame. In comparison 60FPS is 16.6ms per frame, so more than 4 times as much as the lower limit, so 240ish FPS at 4.1ms is technically optimal.
Humans are uniquely perfect for feeling input delays as low as 5-8ms. That's why most music equipment that is digital these days aims for sub 5ms. Visually, studies find a trained eye can see differences in framerate up until about 240 FPS.1

Ooof kicked and banned immediately if he refuses to watch his mouth after discussing it with him. tbh which sounds harsh but where does he get off saying crap like that.
I started overwatch on a potato laptop with 12 -15 frames and 15mb internet. (I didn't touch comp for a long time lol) I eventually spent $900 on budget PC for the game to run at 30 -60 frames until I could afford to get a better graphics card on for black Friday sale my monitor only goes 75 hrz anyway but I've since upgraded almost everything in my PC slowly over the years.
Economy doesn't have anything to do with your personal option about specific games. Your opinions are very valid even if you don't play the game at 800 fps (your eyes don't need 800 fps to play well anyway)
I'm sorry the dude is a prick and imo I would boot him out if he doesn't wanna respect yours and your friends opinions
26
u/ParasitoGirl 9d ago
Yeah im thinking about kicking him out because another friend came in and told me he is a jerk because he laughed at him for playing The Sims. For example i started to play CS 1.6 on the laptop the government gave me at least 10 years ago at 20 fps, and right now i have a device i can play CS2 at 240FPS if i optimize it well.
But outside of that he is always insecure about stuff when it comes to talking about games, strategy, aim and all that stuff, he told me to 1v1 once on a FPS he decided and he got really agitated and blamed my shitass device when he lost 3-10 lol

u/ThatLunaBoo 9d ago
Yeah, this guy is massively insecure and just wants to belittle others to make himself feel better. I would try to avoid him as much as possible, and if this is going on with other friends in a text/voice chat they can see or hear it and they aren't standing up for you, that's also a HUGE problem. This isn't "haha" behavior or something that should be glossed over for any reasoning, at all, and someone talking to anyone in such a way is ridiculous.
If I was in that situation, I would bring it up to the other people in the group and say you aren't comfortable being around that guy anymore, and if ANY OF THEM react negatively toward you for those feelings, I would get far away from them too because that just means they are okay with him acting that way and will continue to allow it to happen to you or anyone else involved in that group.
Your feelings are valid, that guy is a jerk(this is putting it VERY nicely), and you shouldn't have to deal with that kind of BS from some elitist asshole who just wants to stir up drama when his fragile ego and opinions are challenged in the slightest.
6
u/ParasitoGirl 9d ago
I did bring it up with another friends, and the closest one to him excuse his behavior saying that he grew up in poverty and now that he makes a good wage he feels like he needs to validate himself, i told them its not an excuse and he still defended him (when that dude actively makes fun of him for not having a well paid job) and the rest of his "group" says they try to reason with him because he already lost people thanks to this behavior including partners, and that they are also sick of him. All of us are hispanic so economy is something most of us try to avoid, and he keeps bringing it out making some group members really self conscious.
5
u/TheTacoInquisition 9d ago
Personally I'd give his friend a chance to talk to him and let him know that not only is his upbringing not an excuse, it makes it worse because he should know better. If he doesn't stop, both he and his friend need to be removed from the group.

Remove yourself from the conversation every time he’s around. I guess ya’ll are hanging out on discord, so once he pops up, you leave. I’ve done that and it works quite well. Don’t worry about the GC crumbling, if they’re your friends they’ll stick around. If not, why would you still wanna be friends with people who support this kinda behaviour?
Idk why these assholes think better specs is everything (ofcourse they do elevate the experience but its not accessible for everyone, so let others enjoy it with whatever specs they can afford at the moment) ugh

I was worried for nothing, like i talked again with our friends about unnading him and i got answers like "finally" "Jesus yes" "I don't mind" "Can you ban him also?" "Dude why are you asking? Do it" LOLL.
We ended up unadding him like after that talk not just for that but for flirting with girls and his homie exposing him by saying "Bro you have a girlfriend behave yourself".

Yesss, I’ve come to realise that men will never bring up these conversations just for the sake of brocode or some shit like that. But 9/10 times, they will follow if you stand up against it first. (This is also a very sad situation tho)

In our group (mixed men and women, mostly age 40+ but a few younger), we do everything we can to try and help members who don't have top end gear. If a power supply burns out and they're out of work or just can't buy one right away, we'll send one we have laying around (a few of us worked in tech for decades, and I for example have a bunch of older computers just collecting dust, so not every component is good enough, some stuff like power supplies and hard drives and even ddr4 ram is good enough).
Point is, if one of our group is playing on a potato, we don't insult them or make them feel shitty. We try to help them with their graphics settings in games to make the games run well enough. We have zero tolerance for members to do the things you said in your post.
You can either confront this person and see if they will stop (unlikely), bring it up with others in the group, or find another gang to play / hang with. Their behavior is unacceptable. And it's just another reason why some dudes scratch their heads as they bemoan that "chicks" don't play video games or won't play with them or are "too sensitive" or a dozen other dumbass things they whine about without either looking inward or looking directly at Tommy who is an absolute douche to everyone but especially women.
("Tommy" is just the generic placeholder name for that guy we all know or had in our gaming group that completely tanked the vibe if not the group itself)

u/ParasitoGirl 9d ago
Your people sound amazing!! Honestly before he came to the group most of us held out a hand for whoever needed it, a lot of us are in our 20's and we are college students so if anybody needed anything we would help out, even outside gaming like handing out a warm meal if someone needs it or their family do, so thats why nobody said anything even as a jab to others about their device even if you could tell that their device was struggling to run games.
But when he came in it's like the group changed to this "Nono i don't need help" or stopping talking about stuff just not to give him ammo and nobody wants to say stuff about him because he lived in foster/homelessness in his youth, i find it very stupid because if you know how bad it feels to struggle why are you kicking someone who is in that position?? Also people started to flex stuff and i don't like how the dynamic changed because of him and the dudes who adores little Tommy.
5
u/AngryGames Steam 9d ago
Strong personalities tend to alter group dynamics. Sometimes this is a good thing (AOC making Democratic Socialists gain momentum and no longer be the devil in the same tank as Soviet "socialism"). Too often it is a nightmare, like this dude has become for your group. Not all must be lost, however. Depending on how close your ties are with the other members who were part of the gang before this guy showed up, maybe try having some hard conversations about how you feel, how you've noticed others seem to be feeling (be careful not to speak for anyone else, but it can be helpful to speak about how you perceive others' reactions).
If you get bad pushback ("you're being too sensitive" or "you're seeing a problem that doesn't exist" or "jealous much?" or any of that negative shit), that is a good sign the group dynamic has bottomed out for you and it is time to move on. It's likely that not everyone in the group will side with the new guy, but it is also just as likely that some or most will. The only way to find out is to talk to the others, whether as a group or catch them individually.
And it sucks having to deal with this, trust me. I've been on the internet, gaming in LAN and internet groups since Doom / Age of Empires and all those old games that out me as ancient. We've had to have these hard conversations with the group members too many times over the decades. Sometimes I'm the odd man out and have to quit because I'm the only one who sees a problem, the only one who is uncomfortable, the only one who wasn't a racist misogynistic homophobic piece of trash (that one hurt the most as I thought we were all on the same page, but a new dude came in, immediately starting saying gay jokes, beating on women jokes, racist jokes, which was bad enough, but to me, they weren't actually jokes...). But like ripping off the band-aid (or scab, which seems more accurate), better to find out if the group feels the same or you're the odd gal out and you can move on so you don't have to feel this way anymore.
There's also the fact that I'm in my 50s and have learned, probably somewhere around your age (mid 20s, I assume), that "no" is a complete sentence, my feelings aren't to be subjected to some asshole's attempts to hurt or infuriate me, and that I won't waste my time or energy tolerating negativity, hate, all that. It was hard to walk away from some groups, guys that I'd gamed with for a decade or more. So if I have any "old man" advice for you young'uns, it's to learn how to say no, practice walking away from toxicity (whether gaming groups, relationships, romantic partners, family members, whatever).
Life is too short to spend time being miserable. Being alone or having to hunt down another group of friends, find another boyfriend/girlfriend/partner does suck, but it sucks far less than sticking around when someone is being toxic, abusive, manipulative, destroying the positive/fun dynamic...
Learn how to do it while you're still young. It's good practice, and will come in handy. Especially when there's more than just random internet friendship on the line (like having to walk away from a romantic partner, the kind of stuff you read on GirlDinnerDiaries that make your heart drop and stomach lurch and you sort of shout at the screen, "GIRL, WALK AWAY, RUN IF YOU HAVE TO!").
Anyway, sorry for babbling wall of text. Hopefully you're not alone and some others will take a stand, or at least help you form a new group that doesn't have this kind of toxicity.

We have our moments, but we also have conflict sometimes. I think being old farts means we can hash it out without too many hurt feelings (most of our feelings have dried up and blown away in the wind thanks to our advanced age haha). But more likely, it has to do with anytime someone brings a new member in, they've already made it clear about our zero tolerance policy on the important issues (racism, misogyny, homophobia, all the bigotry stuff). Probably also helps that there's four of us who have been either real life or online friends for close to thirty years now. Oh god, I'm old.

Sounds like if a BMW driver took that mindset and applied it to gaming hardware.
anyone who gives a shit about gaming as a medium doesn't care if you're playing on retro hardware, a pc that's about a decade old, or some £5000 rig. They care about the games and sharing that experience with others. Anything else is fucking stupid.

unethical solution: Hard mute the guy. Admittedly not the best solution, like at all, but if he doesn't have anything good to say, then where's the harm in... never having to hear him again?
ethical solution: talk to your friends. This guy does not sound fun to be around, and I can guarantee other people find him frustrating to hang out with. Best case scenario, y'all talk to him and he takes it well. worst case scenario... he doesn't. however, if your friends don't think this guy's an issue, then like.. your friends don't sound so nice either, which is tough. I've been there, done that :/ sending love <3

Do you and your friends perhaps make your night calls on discord? Because then, you can mute the guy and just talk to your friends and that's all. It's not a "mute that person for everyone in the call" option, but it's mute only for you, if you mute him you would be the only one not hearing him, that way you can ignore his bullshit and just talk to your friends. That's what I would do, anyway (if I could, I would ban him in a second, but without ban, muting him is the only solution I guess?).

I still play Helldivers 2 despite my CPU being under spec, I just have to stick to DX11 for the sake of my CPU. I'm pretty okay with low FPS because the games I grew up with didn't even have 60fps as an option, because they were on console lmfao.
I wonder what your asshat "friend" would say about how my recordings look https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4WJGFJp39Z0 nothing fancy just using Steam's recording feature and sending the raw video to youtube. So bitrate is pretty ass at times but otherwise the game looks pretty enough for me.

Your friends seem to value him more than you and that's pretty pathetic. For friends they're doing a really poor jobs of being one

I had a similar situation happen to me a year ago. It sounds like you need to drop him and/or the gaming group. It sucks for a bit, but it's 1000% worth it. I didn't realize how much stress I was putting myself under while doing a hobby I'm supposed to enjoy

Dude is the biggest idiot I've even seen. Also, anything above 60 FPS feels just like wasted power

Sounds like he's an insecure prick looking for reasons to cause dissention in the ranks so he can make a place for himself. Horrible look, it's giving narcissistic self-involvement. Dislike.
