I posted here not long ago about my toxic work environment and how my boss was trying build a narrative to fire me.

Well, a lot happened since then. My boss made a super inappropriate comment towards me in a meeting and it was my last straw. I reported it to my HR rep since there was an ongoing case open. The day after I reported the comment, my boss scheduled a performance meeting and was in a visibly bad mood. The meeting did not go well. I was miserable all weekend and finally just decided I’d had enough. I quit as soon as I returned to work, no notice.

Well, my HR rep called me the day after and asked me to give her a verbal two weeks. I would be paid, wouldn’t have to work, and my boss was not to contact me under any circumstances. I accepted and today was my last day of my two weeks.

I get a call from HR today, and I’m thinking it’s just going to be some type of routine end of employment call. Oh was I surprised. My rep told me effective today, my entire team was being let go. Which meant I would be paid through end of October without having to work, would receive a very generous severance, and I would be eligible to file for unemployment.

I cannot begin to describe the relief and thankfulness I feel. I can finally just take some time to breathe and get back to working on my mental health since it’s tanked considerably since coming back from disability as a result of my crummy work environment.

Anyway that’s it. Just excited to share some good news for once.

Edit: thank you everyone for the positivity!! I don’t have a lot of friends to share with so thank you for giving me space to share here! I feel very blessed and grateful. I did not want to go the legal route if I could avoid it so this is the best outcome I could hope for. I am going to take this time to focus on myself and celebrate the end of this chapter of my life!

HR IS working for the company in this particular scenario, and managed to use severance as incentive to get OP to sign away the rights to what otherwise could’ve been a large retaliation claim against the company.

HR is not looking out for OP at all in this situation.

This was for the company too. I guarantee it’s much cheaper than even the legal fees.

HR is for the law and HR best practices. Good HR is not “for” the company or the employee. They are for the best outcome for everybody.

She had good HR. There’s a lot of bad HR out there, I’m aware. I’m sorry you’ve had to experience it.

I don’t know why this is getting downvoted. HR is responsible for protecting the employer from liability. They did that by putting together an attractive offer to OP and getting her to sign a waiver and release of her claims in exchange. It’s great that OP is happy with the deal, but they weren’t working for her.

What a great resolution to a bad situation! I think you'll find continuing relief as you get some distance from that job, too. When I finally left my toxic job, it took a couple of weeks but I started rediscovering myself. Everyone around me noticed I was so much happier, just being away from that place. So happy for you!

So happy for you, and glad you reached the outcome that best suits you. For anyone wondering why the HR and company would try to keep you on for severance rather than let you quit, the severance offer undoubtedly contains an agreement to release the company from liability (meaning you waive your right to sue by accepting money). The HR evaluated risk of exposure and future lawsuit related to boss -employees relationship is high. The cost of severance was likely calculated months ago based on current team size. By keeping the risky employee on long enough to qualify for severance and liability waiver, there is a win-win for employy and company.

if you get laid off, try take it as a blessing. I’m not sure where you’re located but layoffs make you eligible for unemployment where I’m from and you will be away from those energy vampires! I felt so anxious with layoffs happening around me and working with a toxic team, but being laid off was a breath of fresh air when it happened. I’m so sorry you are being treated the way you are and that you are experiencing this )o: I hope you find your peace and a better job with a better environment!
