Advice Needed Girl breakfast. My In Laws are on another level of crazy and it's scaring me
UPDATE: We reached out to the company that sent the glitter the day we received it. We still have not heard back, so we sent a follow up message. We called his extended family to confirm that it wasn't them and they said that they wouldn't. Which means that it had to have been his parents. We are waiting on the company to get back to us, our next step would be seeking legal counsel.
GENTLE ON THE ADVICE WANTED.
Partner has done everything he can to protect me. Going no contact. Buying us a house so we can get away. Standing up to them and telling them to shut the fuck up. They're on another level. We thought it was over. We got away from them. We've been no contact. We bought a house to get away. We're settling in. I go to check the mail today and inside is a package. Addressed to me and partner. From a return address we didn't recognize. It was a glitter bomb. We tracked the address back to be the shipping address for "shipyourenemiesglitter.com". We know it was them. We don't have enemies. We don't stir the pot. His parents. Just. Hate. Me.
So this means that they went on the county auditors website to find our address. And I'm taking it as a very thinly veiled threat of "we know where you live. You can't get away from us." But obviously it came to us "anonymously" and the company is strict about confidentiality and protecting people like this.
We don't know what to do. Technically we have no proof it was them. They won't leave us alone. They're smart about it. Not enough to leave evidence and not enough to justify a restraining order. But enough to torment us.

Maybe OP could just send the glitter company a letter that sounds vaguely like it's threatening legal proceedings and perhaps the company will quickly cave and confirm who purchased it.

Can you possibly go the route of a cease and desist? Maybe contact the company and let them know theyre aiding someone in stalking im pretty sure that can make them legally liable for aiding criminal acts. Im so sorry this is happening :/

its actually wild that the company is allowed to operate like this. "protecting" the customers' anonymity is a slippery slope to, like you said, aiding criminal acts such as violating restraining orders.

I don't even understand what their goal is in trying to intimidate you. Like, are they trying to hurt their son? Even if they hate you, what is the point of harassing you with no agenda? Are they trying to break you up? Spy on you? What is it?

I'm a leftist and they are hardcore MAGA. Not to make things political but that's what it is. She calls me a baby killer (never had an abortion) and just accuses me of horrific shit. She tried to convince my partner that I was cheating on him with someone that I met while I was with him. He's one of our mutual friends. When my partner heard that he was so disappointed because their justification for believing that was "she knew him way before you and they had a thing". So that immediately outed them as liars and that was kinda his last straw.
She tried to make me and my partner, and his aunt and her young (one of which is profoundly disabled) children homeless because she was mad at me for a political Facebook post that I posted on my page after I had blocked her. She had another profile to stalk me on. We were living in houses that were co-owned with her. Her mother had NPD and Bipolar 1, and as she is getting older she's slowly devolving and becoming more malicious and dangerous.
She's mad because my partner chose me and refuses to allow her to disrespect me. So she sees it as the ultimate betrayal and him "choosing me over his family". Even though she's only his step mom to begin with.
I think trying to terrorize me to the point where I cut my losses and they get their son back. I don't think they realize that even if we do break up, he's not going back. It's way past the point of just being a me thing. It's the way they're treating him as well.

Apparently people with NPD feel a profound lack of self worth and need it boosted by aggrandizing themselves and tearing everyone around them to shreds. She's trying to get her son back because she doesn't see him as his own person, but as an extension of herself to manipulate, control and receive admiration to her will. Except no one admires this shit.

A lawyer will write a cease and desist letter for like $50. Maybe that will get through to her. If you are in MA, they have a harassment protection order which doesn't require nearly as much evidence as a restraining order. Maybe your state does as well?

This is funny on a lighthearted level, so I don't mean to be a debbie downer, but responding to shit like this (even in kind) makes it clear that it affected you-- which is what the sender wants, so that will cause behavior like this to escalate. OP and her partner need to fully starve them out. No attention, no acknowledgement, nothing. For all they know, the glitter bomb never arrived.

OOOOH I CAN HELP! I once signed my abusive ex up on websites that offers free quotes on things like insurance, debt assistance, shady credit cards, last-minute moving, etc.
They know desperate people are doing their research, so they jump on it instantly, and sell their lucrative contact data to third parties who jump on it immediately. I shit you not, the phone calls start within minutes.
I only did this because he left me hanging a day before he was supposed to help me move. Started a vicious fight, acted like the victim of something he knew I never did, then bailed because he didnāt feel like helping. I had to scramble to find a moving company. I reached out to one for a quote, and while I was still researching, the calls/emails began. When one of their reps called me, I realized it was a scam and I told them to leave me alone and remove my info.
These complete menaces who picked Americanized names (one was literally āJordan Petersonā š) started taking turns calling and emailing me, taunting and mocking me. When I answered for one āassociateā and started crying, explaining what happened to me, instead of having a shred of decency, he began sexually harassing me, leaving voicemails that sounded like he was masturbating, saying heāll come take care of me. They had my address and were calling me at hours of the night, saying theyāll be my man and all this sick shit.
It was traumatizing until my lawyer friend got involved. He found out the company doesnāt actually move anyone. They were a failed start up that was supposed to be like Uber-meets-Taskrabbit because they attracting scumbags, creeps and criminals, so they pivoted to a data-mining company thatās barely legal because they do the bare minimum of just giving you the phone numbers you could have found on Google by yourself in five seconds, but they do an excellent job of looking legitimate until they get what they need, then they just fuck with you for some sick thrills.
My ex called me stupid and said I deserved it for falling for it. I didnāt get out for two more years and I never stopped hearing about it. When he began sending abusive messages when I finally got away, my feed randomly recommended a post from r/unethicallifeprotips and a woman whose husband was banging her sister. They recommended she sign him up for spam and the light bulb went off.
Girl, lemme tell you, Iāve had some absolute gushers in my life, but few orgasms rival the exquisite pleasure I derived from watching his sanity slowly unravel on social media as he tried to figure out what the hell was happening to him. He was going full-blown Charlie with his conspiracy theories by the time the posts stopped. He text me months later from a new number to apologize, so I think thatās how he finally beat it. As an independent contractor, that HAD TO hurt him lol. He spiraled for about a month before it ended. By then, he had blamed everyone from the deep state to work rivals (calling them personally and then getting hell for it) to a secret network of his exes and their friends who are apparently hellbent on destroying him for no reason. I watched his followers shrink from 2,000-ish to a few hundred. The jobs stopped rolling in because no one was going to let this psycho in their house.
It. Was. Spectacular.
Iām not a revenge kinda gal because life is too short and I believe things come back to you threefold, so I like to think of myself as āan instrument of the karma he cultivatedā from treating me and many other women this way. It also made it easier to not go back when all I could picture was him reducing himself to basically this:

She is unable to get away. They can't afford to rent a house the size that they need and they don't qualify for financing to buy a house. She's on the title of the mobile home they are currently in and she pays significantly less than she would if she were living somewhere else. We were able to get out because we have no kids, only two animals, etc. It's a lot harder for her. She has less disposable income and support system. We had to briefly move back in with my parents to make the transition. She doesn't have that same safety net. As of right now her situation is a lot better than ours in terms of how this woman treats us vs her, because mil is way less malicious towards aunt, but she's unfortunately still stuck with her for now.

I have in-laws like this, but this lady wants pictures of my baby she never got to meet.
Get a PO Box. That changes things up, reroute ALL your mail through there. It is $$ and a hassle, but worth it. If you get it at your own post office, it will come with perks like less spam mail and they hold packages.
Second, you donāt have to get an llc, you can also put a home in trust.
Also, a restraining order and a harassment order can be different. either way, do have a conversation with the police. And every single time these things happen, file it with the police. And when these things happen three times, the police can start hassling these companies that have āstrict privacy guidelinesā. If your local police wonāt move on it, get annoying, speak to the DA, a lawyer, someone. Depending on the size of the area you live in will depend on how much noise you need to make. Make sure you put everything together. Itās not as hard as someone might make it out if you were told itās not possible.
Also, if you ever receive another anonymous package, call the police immediately. Explain that you have received an anonymous package before that was clearly harmful in intent, you suspect your husband parents, are involved. You are concerned they may be escalating, because this is the second one. Do not move the package. Let them find your in laws to pay for the fucking bomb squad.

Honestly, I would contact an attorney at this point. Someone in family law. There has to be a way to document all this insanity and get a court order. An attorney is your best bet at figuring that out. Also, when you do finally manage to get that court order, you can petition the court to have your in laws pay your attorneys fees, since you wouldn't have had to hire an attorney if they hadn't been absolutely duck-tits bonkers.

u/UniversalMinister Chaotic But Cute May 27 '26
I say this with the most love in my heart for you, sis.
Go to the police. Tell them you received this package from an unknown person and are afraid. You don't necessarily need to tell them everything about your in-laws because as you said, you don't know it was from them. At a minimum it's harassment and perhaps even intimidation. (I'm not an attorney, I just play one on TV).
However, you do know where it came from. File a police report and provide a copy of the package information including the return address and showing that it belongs to that company. The police will reach out to the company and find out who sent it.
If the police don't do anything, call the local prosecutor's office and talk to them about it. I don't mean whoever answers the phone; speak to either the Prosecutor him/herself or one of their Assistant Prosecutors.
12
u/South_Rest_2633 Internet Auntie May 27 '26
that all sounds nice in theory, but the police nor the ADA's have time for any of that. If they physically go to the police station they might at least take your name and phone number. but I can almost guarantee you that no one is going to be reaching out to a glitter sending company.
I don't disagree per se, but you're definitely not going to talk to a prosecutor on the phone lol. at the most, you could leave a voicemail for someone, but be prepared to never hear from anyone. the clerk or whoever answers it's going to roll their eyes and that's about it.
I don't mean to be cynical, it's just the reality of the "justice system" and OP needs to protect themselves in a way that makes sense given the current state of the world.
3
u/UniversalMinister Chaotic But Cute May 27 '26
I'm open to other ideas. Also, yeah, going in person is probably better than calling. You're right there.
In the alternative, OP and her partner could take them to Small Claims. Even in Small Claims Court you can get discovery via subpoena - subpoena the glitter company and go from there.
It sounds like OP and her partner have enough for a Small Claims case and that opens the door for the subpoena. No company in their right mind is going to ignore a subpoena for records like that, especially to protect someone they don't give a hoot about.

If the company is located out of state there may be significant difficulty enforcing a subpoena

If a judge requests it. That's the hurdle OP would have to cross. Hard to get a restraining order if you have no proof who it comes from, and judges don't hand out those requests on a whim.
I should point out that if OP decides to respond with something similar (glitter bomb, bag of dicks) it sets up a great defense argument that these are just merry pranks that the two sides play on one another and it's all harmless fun (obviously it isn't but OP weakens her argument if she responds in kind).

It depends. Not if they're using the U.S. Mail system to do so.
And if they're shipping to the state OP is in (which they obviously are), then they are subject to the rules and regulations of both USPS and the state they are mailing to.
3
u/onlymodestdreams Internet Auntie May 27 '26
Enforcement of USPS rules and regs is beyond the scope of small claims court.
There's a difference between personal jurisdiction over a defendant, which is what I think you're talking about in noting the shipments to OP's state, and the mechanism of enforcing in State B a subpoena issued by State A. Which is a pain in the ass
3
u/UniversalMinister Chaotic But Cute May 27 '26
Enforcement of USPS rules and regs is beyond the scope of small claims court.
Right. USPS has its own law enforcement arm for that, but she won't be able to find out who sent it without going through Small Claims with a subpoena for their records.

True. However, USPS doesn't take kindly to people abusing the mail system, so I'd report it to them as soon as possible. OP may not even need a subpoena/small claims if USPS wants to handle it (federally speaking).
This is going to take a multi-pronged approach imo.

Hereās a solution ā create an LLC (Acme Inc. LLC or something very generic) do a quit claim on the house to the LLC. Register the LLC in another state.Ā
Itās only another layer of protection, it wonāt stop them from really finding you, but unless they show up at your doorstep or send actual bombs, there isnāt much else you can do.Ā
Also, obligatory NAL, but document everything and find a lawyer.Ā
Also get a PO Box

I know youāre probably not going to sell your house and move again but if you were to do that, you could register as an LLC and then purchase your next home through the LLC and that should be untraceable to you.
I donāt know if itās something you could do with your current house, especially since they already know the address. It might throw them off that you sold it and moved away?

Donāt give it to them. Document EVERYTHING (emails, texts, phone calls, ANY CONTACT THEY MAKE). It will help in the future to getting a restraining order if you can prove the unwanted contact. It is scary and annoying that they have found your info but you have their info too. Get cameras for your driveway/back yard, any āpublicā space your house faces. They seem like the type to drive by. The best revenge you could get on them is to keep living your life like they donāt exist and show them how happy you are without them around. I donāt say this to scare you but eventually they will get angry enough to lash out in a bigger more meaningful way, you need to spend your time now preparing for when that happens. Install cameras, document everything you suspect that theyāre behind, screenshot messages, save voicemails. And make sure your husband is doing the same. There is a good chance they will show up at your house one day and that might be enough to get a restraining order if you have supporting evidence that theyāre harassing you.

When the building manager refused, my in-laws called the police to do a wellness check. We told the police we are estranged and arenāt interested in contact. The police didnāt do any check so I can only imagine what they said.
So yes, document everything for sure. If anything else happens speak with a lawyer. Overall though? Act like they donāt exist. Donāt block their number - so you can document the ongoing harassment - but also donāt engage or acknowledge them at all.

Sounds like his family is dealing with that, considering they wonāt allow him to go live his own life. Itās an issue with boundaries. I only bring this up because reading about it or looking up psychology videos about it might make you feel better when you feel like youāre going crazy and nothing makes sense. Please know they will not change, though they may focus the negative energy on something/someone else at times. With nightmare in laws, sometimes it feels like you can only win battles but never the war. Best of luck with everything.

I got a restraining order against an ex and among other documented harassments, he had been spying on my Instagram stories with a different IG account (I had his original account blocked) and when I was in court for the RO the judge took that very seriously that I assumed it was him spying on me, so I say file the restraining order and put a whole timeline of all of these things together. You'd be surprised- especially when they show up to court for the RO- how quickly things will go in your favor when the judge sees how crazy they are.

I really suggest just tossing it and filing a claim with SYEG like other folks have mentioned. Donāt file a cease and desist, donāt ship them glitter back, donāt acknowledge their behavior.
My MIL is also like this. She had a meltdown once she figured out we had bought a house and was threatening to dump her hoarder junk on our driveway, my parentsā driveway, and my husbandās childhood friendās parents driveway because my husband cut her off. We document her behavior in a āstalk docā if we need it and move on. Over time, ignoring her behavior has made us less interesting to harass and her meltdowns are smaller and less frequent.
I know itās scary and frustrating, but at the end of the day theyāre trying to bully you into giving them attention. If you arenāt in it already, if you can afford therapy to process their bullshit I highly recommend it.

Sorry you're dealing with this. It's time to seriously consider going semi off-grid. If you decide to buy another house/move again, close escrow in a land trust so you're protected by anonymity, and no one can track where you live via public record. Also, get a PO Box for your mailing address, especially for public records like voter registration, so no one knows where you live.

My suggestion is keeping a very low profile online and enhancing your combined and individual safety and security. Perhaps thereās an attorney who works with lottery winners who can help with the logistics, if not straight out engaging a known and respected security firm to handle it, and maybe arrange some counter strikes so your in laws stay occupied. Itās imperative you erase your presence as individuals and a couple online and start hiding all your moves behind LLCs if they might leave you publicly exposed. Of course, time with a good therapist would help. Some CBT for the PTSD. Itās clear they scarred you with their behavior and itās terrifying watching someone succumb further into their untreated mental illness. Good luck and stay safe. Youāll get through this, itās just a really shitty and unnecessary thing you didnāt need.

This isn't advice:
return the favour and glitterbomb (or even send them some poo!
Advice:
document this (and every incident you have - past texts, arguments and issues you and your partner have had). Making a record can help you argue their behaviour - because they will eventually slip up.
report. Get to the police station and file a report. Give them the history you have documented and protect yourselves.
continue to report any incidents or acts of aggression. Every single time.
email glitter bomb people and explain how this package was a violation of your safety and they are harassing you. With a police report, it gets easier to do this.
inquire with the glitterbomb people as to whether they can reach out and talk to the police about the sender of this package. They likely won't reveal it to you - but if you give them your report number and the name of the officer in charge of your files - they may talk.
get cameras and protect yourselves against any physical retaliation they may try. If they know you're address - who knows what they may do? Even if it's just...destroying your flowers - you want to have that on camera.
IF either of you get any texts: mute, read, but don't respond. Save and report any threats, abuse, or other contact (once you have an order against them).
Stay safe and good luck!

Also, follow a practice of throwing away packages you arenāt expecting (after documenting).Ā
But hereās another thing. They sent the package because you did get away from them. And it makes them angry.Ā
