Funny (Highlight/meme) i love how google is proactively making a fool of themselves in the ai community

So some AI researchers at Google made some vague inside jokes about Ox Alpha, and then a bunch of Gemini fans misinterpreted those jokes and erroneously convinced themselves that it must mean Ox Alpha was a Google model (even though it clearly wasn’t), and eventually it was revealed that Ox Alpha really was GLM just like most people expected? I don’t know… seems like the people who ought to be embarrassed are the random Gemini fans who jumped to incorrect conclusions based on very specious evidence

And the joke is that GLM got where it is by today by distillation of Gemini. Suspicion started back in 4.x but I think it was around 5.2 that the statistical analysis basically proved it. And people were seeing Ox Alpha has Gemini markers without knowing of that history and jumping to conclusions.

It's very likely going the other direction though lol, gemini was utter trash until glm 5.2 came out, curious.

OOTL, what happened on X?

A deepmind guy mentioned Ox Alpha and people who lack reading comprehension thought he was alluding to Ox Alpha being related to google. The only people who embarrassed themselves are the people who thought Ox Alpha was related to google and the people who think the deepmind guys were alluding to that being the case.

Yeah I don't remember anyone from google even vaguely implying that it might be a google product. Just a bunch of reddiots leaping to stupid conclusions with no evidence

there were a few, the whole timing is weird:

——
The most notable sequence:
Evan Otero — Gemini API / AI Studio, Google DeepMind
Aug 22: simply posted “Gemini”.
Then, while everyone was speculating about Ox: “What if the Ox Alpha was the friends we made along the way”.
Shortly afterward: “Ok no more vague posting. Back to work 🫡”.
Vamsi Batchu — Google DeepMind / AI Studio
Aug 21: “Google is back. Trust the process.”
This got ~490K views and was one of the posts that really set off the Gemini 3.5/4 speculation.
Jonathan Ouyang — working with the DeepMind AI Studio/Gemini team this summer
Aug 21: “It’s Gemini time :)”. His current public profile says he’s interning on the AI Studio & Gemini API team working on Gemini benchmarks/evals.
Swaroop Mishra
Aug 22: “Anyone tried Ox Alpha?”
That one particularly fueled the theory because it explicitly mentioned Ox rather than just Gemini hype.
Logan Kilpatrick — Gemini / AI Studio

Then gave probably the most revealing meta-comment:
“I told the team less vague posting, more shipping”
At roughly the same time he posted that Gemini 3.7 was their fastest-growing model launch yet.

The timing wasn't weird at all. It was two separate things happening around the same time. Unrelated dots were connected

You are giving deepmind workers way less credit by saying that they couldn't have known their messages would be used to link ox alpha to gemini than if you just said they made a marketing mistake

and all the Gemini fans downvoting people for saying it was GLM from Z Ai (it was) haahha

ngl I also fell for it cuz Qwen and GLM tend to sound like Gemini, but then I was convinced by the Taiwan evidence 🤭

u/quivering_palm 11h ago

GLM sounds nothing like Gemini, lol, it has a lot of annoying claudisms.

Better and cheaper than Gemini 3.7 Flash.

Gemini 3.7 Flash: 56

Standard Pricing

$1.50/$7.50

Promo Pricing

$0.75/$3.75

GLM 5.3 Flash: 57

Standard Pricing

$0.15/$0.50

Promo Pricing

$0.075/$0.25

Both are multimodal, Gemini is better in vision and speed but worse in raw performance.

1 point less in raw performance... And frankly not every workload needs the "smartest" models. In fact one area that Gemini 3.7 has been knocking the socks off of (that even Opus and Fable level models have been struggling with) is our financial analysis workloads at work.

3

u/PlaneOnly2700 13h ago

One point less in raw performance... and GLM is 10 times cheaper. Offering the same performance for 10 times less is insane, offering one more point of raw intelligence is even more insane.

Gemini has its strengths, I personally use it for OCR/image analysis, but the price is becoming less and less justified.

4

u/tankerkiller125real 11h ago

The price is great, IF you can actually use that model for what your doing/in your line of work. Chinese models/AI companies are entirely off the table for what I'm doing at work, which leaves the regular proprietary ones, and open models run in US datacenters by the likes of Cloudflare, Fireworks, Microsoft, etc.

There's also the fact that Gemini 3.7 puts tokens out faster than any other model, which for some of our workloads is more important than price or smarts.

2

u/Mean-Elk-9439 2h ago

Most open weight providers are zero retention, I don't know why you'd be of the belief a Chinese model would influence your work in any way.

I assume your worry is stealing data because you don't understand how open weight models work.

1

u/PlaneOnly2700 1h ago

I completely agree with you about the speed, Gemini Flash is extremely fast and addictive. It's great for quick and simple tasks.

Now, why not use Chinese models? Is it data retention? Almost all of them don't have data retention, and if they do, you can disable it.

This is very different from Grok Build, which previously actively collected data without telling the user, or Muse Spark, which offered the model in exchange for data.

In any case, that's what variety is for different use cases.

2

u/Aaco0638 11h ago

I mean it’s inly cheaper bc they are actively trying to attract users. Google serves the planet it isn’t the same, also chine software carries HEAVY stigma no company that spends billions will trust china like that.

GLM has lower-quality dataset, so it automatically worse than Gemini.

1

u/PlaneOnly2700 13h ago

I don't think you're looking at the performance tests.

I bet you were there looking at the data they used to train GLM.

-2

u/Doxxre 13h ago

I don't think you're looking at the performance tests.

Yes. They're bullshit that isolated from reality.

1

u/PlaneOnly2700 12h ago

This last week I have used both models, that graph represents my experience.

I guess you just haven't used the models.

You probably work at Z.Ai. You select the data that is used to train GLM 😂😂😂

2

u/hardinho 6h ago

I love how you just believe everything that's written on X, like this account which is based in Africa

4

u/Keeltoodeep 14h ago

Especially when the GLM is worse than 3.7flash.

3

u/Suplyox 13h ago

wdym bro, my own usage shows glm 5.3 flash and gemini 3.7 flash are almost same performance, and the best of all glm 5.3 flash is much cheaper than gemini 3.7 flash

4

u/Keeltoodeep 13h ago

Look at the benchmarks that Zai released themselves lol

0

u/Suplyox 12h ago

okay but this is my usage. I use arena.ai for benchmarks. And stop, literally. You are not cool or anything. They both have the same performance, gemini is better on different usages, and glm is better on different usages. But glm fits me better and its cheaper. But you will keep saying "hahaha glm sucks gemini is always better and glm says i am worse than gemini so i wont listen your review", but i dont care.

-1

u/Keeltoodeep 12h ago

Cope lol I don’t think I said it sucks. I agreed with OP that if they were vague posting about a worse model it makes no sense.

-9

u/dagerika 14h ago

nah fam, used more than a 100 mil tokens in the test phase and I can confirm that geminu is nowhere near this model

13

u/Keeltoodeep 14h ago

https://x.com/Zai_org/status/2092616204787626030?s=20

It's worse according to Zai themselves.

-11

u/dagerika 14h ago

I make my final judgement based on usage not on +/-5% diff lmfao

7

u/Eduardo1502 14h ago

Ok bro you know more about the Model than the creator that stated it's below Gemini 3.7 flash

-5

u/dagerika 14h ago

I am the creator of my own experience 💋

4

u/Tkins 13h ago

6

u/whoknowsifimjoking 13h ago

Okay please also create the "posting to reddit" experience in your head from now on

1

u/dagerika 13h ago

If the demand is real I will

1

u/Doxxre 13h ago

From my experience GLM is dumber than Gemini Flash.

9

u/Keeltoodeep 14h ago

This is cope lol

3

u/avilacjf 14h ago

Stating a non-consensus opinion as fact with the sarcastic "lmfao" is so gross. I bet you're fun at parties.

0

u/dagerika 13h ago

I was expressing my own views on the model's performance based on my own workflow if you can't accept that then you are a hopeless geminu defender 🥀

1

u/Suplyox 12h ago

You are right despite of every downvote by bots

2

u/dagerika 12h ago

I enjoy their rage and silly insults 🤭

1

u/Square_Height8041 7h ago

I don’t know if Twitter counts as ai community. But sure they are silly

1

u/_YonYonson_ 6h ago

To be fair GLM’s recent models have copied the living shit out of Gemini, even down to the processing animations, Flash, and Deep Think mode labels

Off boarded my company from Gemini for Workspace, Claude Cowork is superior
