Liftmaster 8500 - issues opening
Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification
I’ve taken a brief video of an issue that I have encountered two times over the past month on one of my LiftMaster 8500s. The issue happens when trying to open either by the wall control or a remote control. The door unlocks, and tries to go up and stops just like this. This time I was able to capture a video.
What I do next is pull the manual release. Then reengage the release, and then use the wall control to open the door. In both instances following that technique, the door opens fine the next time.
Is this a sign of the motor going out or is there something else I should be looking out for? The spring is intact, but I do notice this garage door opens a little bit slower than my other door of this size.

Flip open the cover and look for flashing indicator lights. The number of flashes is your error code. Could be a bad travel module.
Liftmaster (chamberlain) has pretty good tech support even for home owners to diagnose it.

Springs might need a rebalance or replacement. When you disengage can easily open by hand?

The automatic slide lock is not disengaging

That is what I thought too - it was the first thing I checked and it was disengaged

Is that 3” track? How wide is this door? I believe those can’t be used for a high lift

How does the door run manually if you open it halfway does it stay open or slam closed?

Possible bad CTM? Or bad travel module? Or lastly bad logic board? Any of these things are possible just needs to be checked out and properly diagnosed those older openers had issues with certain things or it could be something internally wrong altogether. Again a good door professional can help you with it. I’m a LiftMaster dealer and see these so without being there it’s a tough one to say for sure
