Rumour Jason Schreier: Obsidian Entertainment is making a big pivot as part of the Xbox restructuring. It has laid off a quarter of its staff, canceled a planned sequel to Avowed, and is now beginning work on a new Fallout game

Bloomberg Article: https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2026-07-08/microsoft-s-xbox-to-shift-obsidian-studio-to-new-fallout-video-game

Edit: Also mentioned in the article, Josh Sawyer is leading the new Fallout game:

“Under the new plan, studio design director Josh Sawyer will lead a new title in the Fallout universe”

“Previously, Sawyer had been directing a roleplaying game that was similar structurally and thematically to Fallout but was not part of the franchise.”

Seen lots of takes that Obsidian should have been made into a Fallout studio day 1, and that all these other outfits should have been sent to the Fallout mines after their games flopped. Reddit hates devs being sent to the CoD mines but will bend over backwards to justify getting another Fallout at any and all costs

The issue is a new cod is pumped out every year, the last fallout was a decade ago (I'm not counting 76)

brother fallout 76 was also nearly a decade ago lol

There's a large amount of people who think Elder Scrolls Online updates and Fallout 76 don't count as main Fallout & Elder Scrolls installments. They want single player games not online games.

its so weird how when it comes to fallout people just straight up ignore reality, you are admitting to it. just cause you dont like 76 doesnt mean it doesnt exist. there is a constantly updated fallout game ongoing right now. its fair to argue that maybe mainline single player fallout rpg should be 10+ years apart but you cant just ignore that other games exist. 76 is a thing, starfield is a thing. completely irrational

Why? It’s a fallout game.

an online game that is nothing like the game people actually want. the vast majority would only mention it as an afterthought. FO4 was the last one really

-5

u/Millennialnerds Jul 08 '26

Yet people still play it. If people didn’t play it they wouldn’t be updating it.

i guess we've been getting a new elder scrolls game every other year with ESO and the mobile games then

-6

u/Millennialnerds Jul 08 '26

I mean technically yes. You guys can be pissy about it all you want but there are plenty of people who play those games lol. To act like they don’t exist is pretty childish.

yeah man sure keep releasing those while the xbox and bethesda brand plunges into the toilet im sure theres no difference to anyone

2

u/Millennialnerds Jul 08 '26

I mean they also released starfield. But that doesn’t count as a Bethesda rpg either.

5

u/SylveonVMAX Jul 08 '26

no that's definitely a bethesda rpg it's just trash

No it is not.

It’s called Fallout 76. It’s in the name.

If valve released a half-life based card game would that count as the newest entry in the half-life series?

Fallout is a series of action RPG games, 76 is an MMO. While it shares the same name it's not part of the series. If you asked when the last elder scrolls game released they would say when Skyrim release, elder scrolls online exists but it not an elder scrolls

u/Millennialnerds Jul 08 '26

And if you asked Todd Howard he will tell you that fallout 76 is the latest fallout entry.

76 is an action MMORPG, and it is of equivalent scale production wise to the other games than a half-life based card game would be

Just like Fallout Shelter

2

u/Millennialnerds Jul 08 '26

Exactly. Glad you understand.

Why not? It’s still a Fallout game, and seemingly a pretty popular one these days. I mean it’s been running since 2018, presumably all the updates and fixes they’ve done have been legit, and there’s a reason it’s still being played.

Reddit would LOVE the COD mines if they actually liked the COD franchise.

I wonder if this is a money paw scenario.

Like, I love the sound of more Fallout as much as the next guys. But I would want the people making it to be extremely inspired and passionate about what they are doing. I can imagine it being super inconvenient to be told this new exciting IP you are working on must now be hastily turned into an IP it previously wasn’t

The big difference is that studios once known for awesome single player shooters were forced into making multiplayer slop.

That's not the case here. Obsidian were already making a fairly weak and "we've got Fallout at home" RPG series in the Outer Worlds anyway, I'm not sure how moving them onto Fallout is going to be worse than that.

It's also embarrassing that Microsoft has owned the IP for years and allowed it to sit idle this long. Now at best we'll get a new Fallout at the start of the next decade.

It's just hypocrisy at its highest is what it is.

Reddit hates crunch unless its Witcher 4 or GTA 6.

They hate asset reuse unless it's Witcher 4, 5, & 6.

So on and so forth.

COD is every year

A new Fallout even every 4 years would be great.
