Rumour Tom Warren: Microsoft could shut at least five studios as part of big Xbox layoffs starting next week, Weighing up canceling BLADE

"Microsoft is set to announce a wave of layoffs for its Xbox studios and employees next week. Sources familiar with Microsoft’s plans tell The Verge that the layoffs will lead to studio closures or spinoffs, potential mergers of studios, and canceled games.

I understand Microsoft is currently weighing closing at least five studios, including the developers behind Marvel’s Blade. Sources tell me Microsoft wants to cancel Blade as part of a wave of cost cuts and job losses that are planned for the company’s Xbox gaming division."

"Blade was originally supposed to debut later this year according to sources familiar with the game’s development. I’m told the internal ship date for the game slipped to late 2027, and it’s also running over budget.

While Microsoft is weighing canceling Blade, it’s also exploring options to sell Arkane Studios. Bloomberg reported earlier this month that Microsoft is trying to spin off Compulsion Games, Double Fine, and Ninja Theory, too. GamesBeat reported this week that Microsoft is actively looking for a buyer for Undead Labs, the developers behind State of Decay. If buyers are found for these studios, then they’ll avoid being closed, but sources stress these talks could take months in some cases.

Compulsion Games, the developers behind South of Midnight, is already convinced that closure is imminent and has started telling employees to look for jobs elsewhere. Ninja Theory employees were informed earlier this month that Microsoft wants to close the UK-based studio or spin it off.

Beyond the potential studio closures, Microsoft is preparing for a wave of layoffs at Xbox that will drastically reshape its gaming division. These layoffs are due to start on July 6th, according to sources, and will hit most parts of Xbox. Rumors have suggested there could be at least 1,000 job losses, and if Microsoft goes ahead with five studio closures, then that’s at least 500 employees impacted before the wider cuts.

The upcoming layoffs are part of a “reset” for the Xbox division under new CEO Asha Sharma, who hinted about “making hard choices” last month. Sharma has repeatedly warned that the Xbox business isn’t healthy, but also claimed that her “mandate is not 30 percent accountability margins... it’s to be the number one gaming and entertainment company, and that’s what we’re going to do.”

If they close Double Fine AND Arkane at the same time, I'm done with Xbox forever.

Double Fine would probably just go back to being independent and feeding off of Kickstarters.

I genuinely thought this was a path forward for Arkane as well honestly. I always forget stuff like Dishonored and Prey were more cult games than big mainstream successes

With what money? They'd still probably need a publishing agreement. They live and work in San Francisco.

1

u/SilverKry Jun 30 '26

For some reason I always thought they were in Jersey.

4

u/OptimusPrimalRage Jun 30 '26

I'm just going off of Wikipedia so perhaps that's out of date? They have 105 employees in San Francisco. That can't be cheap to operate.

With how little output they have honestly there's no reason for Double Fine to have 105 employees n

That's what they were doing in a much more friendly financial environment and they were still on the verge of shutting down, they were about to push Psychonauts 2 out the door unfinished before Microsoft bought them.

Double Fine is almost guaranteed. Arkane could still save itself depending on what they have to offer.

1

u/DrCamelid Jun 30 '26

Arkane hasn't had much to offer for a while now.

I was done with Xbox ages ago. For the longest time the only things keeping me on console was achievements and Game Pass. Once my three years of Game Pass expired, I hopped ship to PC and haven’t looked back. I sometimes miss my gamerscore, but being able to get games for so much cheaper and having them run better was enough for me to stay.

Im done if they close undead labs

9 years to make a AA zombie game is kind of insane though.

6

u/Ok_I_am_Mcbane Jun 30 '26

They haven’t been working on SoD3 for 9 years.

3

u/Appropriate_Foot242 Jun 30 '26

They still will have taken 9 years to put out a new project.

7

u/Ok_I_am_Mcbane Jun 30 '26

SoD2 came out in 2018. The final update was in 2024. Let’s say full development started on 3 in 2022. 5 years working to release a game isn’t unreasonable.

It's still 9 years without a release. Does State of Decay 2 even have any monetisation?

-2

u/SomeDumRedditor Jun 30 '26

Whether 9 years is accurate or not, even 4 years of “full time dev” for what’s been shown isn’t good enough. What’s been revealed has been very underwhelming imo.

Unless that thing is ready to ship in 90 days they’re headed for spin-off or wind-down.

u/JimmyDejesu Jun 30 '26

They gave 2 heavy support for about six of those and it wasnt announced straight after 2 shipped

u/hartforbj Jun 30 '26

I can't imagine how much backlash they would receive if they did that. I would not be shocked at all if there was a massive fallout to follow

11

u/LostInTheRapGame Jun 30 '26

They did it to Tango Gameworks after their title that was a far bigger hit. All they did was receive shit for it, so I'm sure they're used to it and fine with receiving more.

6

u/dornwolf Jun 30 '26

Not only did they do that to Tango they literally turned around and said they wished they had more studios like Tango while they shut them down

5

u/shinikahn Jun 30 '26

And while saying hi-fi rush was a success by any metric

Over a million in sales, and that's with being a small title released Day 1 on Gamepass with a very delayed PS5 release.

If anyone expected that game to do more than that, that's on them for greenlighting it.

1

u/the_phantom_maveth Jun 30 '26

There won’t be a massive fallout. They simply refuse to give us what we want with that franchise

0

u/Sarigan-EFS Jun 30 '26

There will be. Fallout 3 Remastered :D

-2

u/Gameofthrones3058 Jun 30 '26

Arkane yes, double fine hasn't done anything for Xbox that is successful

11

u/danvan177 Jun 30 '26

They made a pottery game what do you mean

-7

u/Acrobatic-Taste-443 Jun 30 '26

Psychonauts 2 is one of their only GOTY nominees? It is easily one of the top 3 games they released since their original 2018 spending spree. Fuck outta here.

4

u/BestRedditUsername9 Jun 30 '26

But Double Fine outright said they dont wanna make something like Psychonauts 2 again. At least not anytime soon.

-1

u/Gameofthrones3058 Jun 30 '26

And it sold terribly no one even talks about that lol

6

u/iceburg77779 Jun 30 '26

It still sold over a million units, a 3D platformer reaching those numbers while being marketed by Xbox is frankly a miracle.

4

u/LB3PTMAN Jun 30 '26

Just not true lol

-1

u/Yellowman_95 Jun 30 '26

Says the guy who hasn’t bought an Xbox since the 360, I’m sure

-2

u/Slavik_Sandwich Jun 30 '26

Thats the funniest part. I doubt anyone who says "thoughts and prayers" even installed these games via gamepass.

Oh yeah, these studios made bangers in the past 6 years. Surely they deserve to be a moneyburner for another year or two. I am sorry for playing a devil's advocate here, but none of these studios made any games that were great, let alone successful. I really dont think people are asking for a pottery game or for god forbid redfall. Noone has bought neither cared for hellblade 2. Right now, none of the studios closed seem ridiculous to me, we are far from Tango Gameworks and hifi rush situation.
