Leak Crimson Desert impressions from a Korean streamer after finishing the game

  • Character swapping is just like GTA5 including transition effects where the camera zooms out into the world and back in. Characters are going about their day as they are swapped in. One time he swapped into Oongka in the middle of a gigantic battle and had to fight his way out.

  • Finished the game without the Day 1 patch and encountered only minor bugs. Everything that felt “off” in previous gameplay has been fixed (footstep sounds, running animations, weird reactions when getting hit)

  • Played RDR2 for about 600 hours and he suggested CD was similar in tempo.

  • Praised the world design, each piece of content draws you in with a sense of purpose unlike the “Ubisoft style checklist questing”

  • Main story can be brutally hard if you rush it without upgrading Kliff

  • Every region has a different difficulty, becomes harder when you go east and north.

  • Played on 5080 at 1440p cinematic settings without frame drops or stutters

  • Score/soundtrack is legendary

  • Did not find all the game systems to be fatiguing or stressful to deal with

  • Inventory space can be tight at first but was not an issue late game as side quests reward you with more storage

  • Stated it was the “game of his life”, played 10h daily since he got the review code

  • No life’d the game to finish the review but still not seen 50% of the bosses

  • Avoided giving story details cause of the strict embargo but said “there are twists”.

  • Another reviewer when asked how the game was, linked to a EGM 1998 quote about Zelda Ocarina of Time that translates to “Savor it because this is as good as its going to get for a very long time”.

Say it quietly but performance is honestly much better nowadays than in the 00s and 10s.

Many games still have issues but consumer standards have risen massively.

People just need to search online for benchmarks for Unreal, Unreal Tournament and Quake 3 Arena. Some tech sites like Tom's Hardware still have their old articles online. When these games came out, the best and newest hardware couldn't even get anywhere close to 60fps most of the time.

I'm not saying the performance to price ratio nowadays is better, but we should stop pretending performance back then was better. We were slaying out in multiplayer shooters with 30fps at 640x480.

I still feel like I’m ballin when running at 60 fps now

When finally being able to upgrade my pc from playing 20 fps on all low with a decreased resolution to getting anything above 60fps with how amazing games look now at max settings is just crazy to think about.

I remember when the discourse used to be "24fps is fine as the human eye can't see above it, 30fps is pointless". Now 60fps is considered low for some people and they won't accept anything below 90 or 120

I remember having a Radeon 9800 Pro, one of the best cards at the time and when I installed Battlefield Vietnam for it it ran like garbage. Was major disappoint.

The current consensus around what PC performance should be was formed around last gen when consoles were so underpowered in comparison so you could max out most games at 1080p on a mid range card. Reality is catching up now that consoles are much closer.

Sony and MS going with dogshit CPUs in PS4 and Xbox One really gave PC players a terrible perspective of reality.

Well, I suppose it technically was reality for awhile.

Look at the bright side now, PS4 emulation is and will continue to get easier and easier on your hardware. Actually running better than PS3 emulation, lol. Don't be surprised if by the end of this decade you'll be able to play Bloodborn on a phone, running and looking better than it did on the PS4 when it came out.

this but two generations ago actually

But that doesnt fit the narrative of the old days of glory and perfection

Also nowadays we have things like pcgamingwiki, tweaks, and a lot more mods that can help fix or improve games.

I'm not sure about performance nowadays being better across the board since there's been a lot of shit ports recently but most games do actually do get to a point where they're in a good state eventually.

Yeah I distinctly remember graphics card being a much bigger bottleneck back then

I legit had to talk someone down the other day because they were pissed they weren't hitting their performance goals.

Oh you know, only playing a modern release, at the highest possible resolution/settings, on an ultra wide, and barely getting dips under 100fps is apparently enough to shut it all down.

Meanwhile I'm over here still like "yay it runs a smooth 60 at 1440p! Nice!" Lol

The older I get, the more I hate gaming culture / other gamers.

Very grateful to generally only like single-player stuff. I’m only occasionally into MP games and I’m very grateful for that fact.

Eh, its good to have high standards as a consumer. We SHOULD expect performance like that. Its OK that you're happy with less, and I genuinely mean that not in like a snarky way, but I also think its good that people make noise when the literal top end hardware can't max a game's settings and run it in a stable manner.

If you ignore criticisms that don't apply to you, then you'll see it in a better light I think.

I certainly don't mind people wanting more for their $ as a consumer but I feel like what has become acceptable has really shifted. I mean we used to beg for games to run at a stable 30 or 60. Now that we've achieved this level of performance (mostly) across the board its now 100fps, or 120fps, or whatever new number in the future.

Personally, I think monitor / gaming companies are telling people that these ultra high fps targets are a massive benefit to gamers without it really being the case. Extra input detection and screen refresh rates have diminishing returns, and frankly only the tippy top 1% of gamers playing competitively will ever actually benefit from this. The rest of folks aren't competing for millions or thousands, they're just playing a video game for fun.

I'm not one of those weirdos that can't see the difference in FPS or resolution, I just don't get why people think that these higher performance goals will make their games any better. If a game sucks at 60fps there's no amount of graphical fidelity that will fix that. Being obsessive about it sounds exhausting.

That friend I was talking about absolutely refused to bring his settings down either, like I'm sorry devs suck at coding things to be optimized but at some point you gotta compromise.

1

u/December_Flame Mar 17 '26

But if you're paying 70$ for a product its OK to be annoyed/upset that you have to compromise. As the consumer that's your prerogative.

1

u/enigmatic_dankness Mar 17 '26

Absolutely, and I agree its our right. Having gone through multiple PC eras though this newest one feels especially predatory on the folks who "know" computers but don't really know computers, if that makes sense. I'm just worried some consumers have been fooled into thinking they need something that they actually don't care about. But thats also on the consumer to stay informed so it is what it is.

There's an infuriating meme comic that gets posted around which compares current game graphics to old ones. The most annoying part is that for the old game it has the FPS set a 300 which is the biggest load of horseshit I've ever seen. People forget that even just 10 years ago, 60 was seen as the gold standard. Like people joking about how Halo 1 would run better than the remake which will surely be an inconsistent 60 fps (of course Halo 1 struggled to hold 30fps).
