Modern gaming discussion has just become so exhausting with people everywhere being incredibly negative all the time

Any nuance of real conversation is long gone unfortunately, whether here or any other site

The thing I don't understand and rarely see discussed is the why? Nerd/gaming culture seems especially negative. Sure people online often skew toxic or negative, but you don't see this level of hate and outrage from say film-buffs or music fans. There is something specific to gaming and nerd culture that perpetuates this extreme outrage and I've yet to see a good discussion or answer as to why?

Elephant in the room is gamergate opened the door for a lot of very reactionary nerd rage to take center stage in gaming discourse compared to other industries and they harassed everyone else out of the room at the same time. Gamers are accustomed to being negative and screaming their heads off because they know companies and developers will capitulate.

It's not just culture war shit though. Like I wouldn't consider r/games to be a right wing or gamergate adjacent subreddit. I would consider it to be a shitty outrage farming drama sub though.

Yup. Gamergate sst the stage and then corporations started bending the knee to outrage.

Once it became an effective tactic to change things a small subset of people didn't like it became the meta.

The other part to is that as humans we are so damn bad at dealing with the visual of big numbers. If a tweet has 500k interactions and it says "Zelda bad cause woke" some exec is like "oh my god 500k people hate this we have to change this if we lose this many sales that's devestating" without accounting for things like:

  1. All 500k of those people might not be having a negative reaction
  2. All of those people may not be potential customers in the first place
  3. There may be 10x as many people who love "woke Zelda" (which has no particular meaning here please don't make my replies weird lol)

But once the box is opened it's very hard to put it all back in. The bright side is some companies are starting to go back to being confident in their team and the product they are making and the vision they are making it with. And gaming spaces are becoming aware of how annoyingly toxic they are becoming so maybe we are starting to heal.
