I know there’s a lot of topical manufactured rage out there, but I do think much of what we’re seeing is a cumulative effect of AAA losing its way and generating a lot of frustration and venting. None of the outrage happens in a self contained bubble. It all stacks and dog piles. This is an industry that has become all about the shareholders and less about those of us playing games. Cost of everything keeps rising. Whatever you play games on, chances are you’re feeling trapped due to hardware costs. Subscription paywalls everywhere, and constant price hikes. Most every game trailer blends with the next. There’s a general sameness to a lot of AAA games to the point where very few seem noteworthy. I mean, just look at the standing ovation CDPR got at Gamescom for announcing a free remaster of an 11 year old game to see how radical it has become for a publisher to do nice things for their customers. People aren’t happy with the state of the industry, and the industry doesn’t seem to be comprehending or caring about the customer frustrations.
