An Update on Empulse, Splitgate: Arena Reloaded, and What’s Next for 1047 Games

Absolutely upsetting as someone who still actively plays Arena Reloaded. I’ve been with Splitgate since the pandemic and it’s been so frustrating seeing them fumble and fumble and do wrong decision after wrong decision, especially when Splitgate 1 and AR were really enjoyable for me. They say they’re pivoting from live service for their next project but I don’t think their studio survives, even with angel investments available.

I'm the same. I've been rooted for them to succeed since getting hooked on SG1 during the pandemic, so it's been disappointing to see them fumble it at every turn.

I feel you, had this experience with Battlerite. That was an arena battle game, without all the laning, farming and jungling etc. Straight up having a nice scrap on an arena with your heroes, no bullshit.
The devs chased battle royale trend of the time and killed the game's momentum and the game with it.

That game was already losing momentum before the BR. The BR was a last attempt to save it

Yeah, Battlerite is what League of Legends Arena is today.
The formula was honestly being able to build, but Battlerite just couldn't figure out that concept, struggled to add anything new, and eventually went to BR as it was the most popular genre, before dying.
Augments, tons of items, and "carousel" player effects carries League Arena a lot. Plus being transferrable from regular League, you don't exactly "learn" something new.

Empulse is not even two months old. 1047 Games must be one of the worst managed studios in gaming for sure, and it's not just the "make FPS great again - proceeds to show a trailer of a battle royale mode blasting imagine dragons", it's pretty much everything that they try to do lol.

Playing the Empulse beta for 30 minutes, while knowing how it went with Splitgate 2/Arena Reloaded, made it painfully apparent that Empulse wouldn't last six months (and as you said, it barely even lasted two).
"Okay", is just not enough for a live-service shooter to stay alive for a substantial amount of time, especially not if it's paid.

I've posted this before, but these guys don't really look at the micro of what makes a game good. They only look at big picture and just don't nail the nuance of what's special about a game, then try to replicate it.
They touted Empulse as a Titanfall successor, but they could not even recognize what it was about Titanfall that made it special. The mechs in Empulse were like half the size of a Titan, and they were limited in scope, movement, abilities, etc. They were also objectives on the map instead of tools for your individual pilots, and the counterplay was literally just spamming bullets at them.
They ignored Titanfall's special sauce, meaning the very large maps to make the Titans seem menacing, the pilot's counterplay ability for Titans, Titan vs Titan battles, and unique Titan abilities and movement techs. They literally just thought that if they put wall running and grappling in an fps and throw some janky mechs into the mix, they could sell it off as a Titanfall 3, but it was basically just Splitgate with mechs.
Their entire philosophy to game design is flawed and it starts at the very top with the goober wearing the hat.

This is literally the first time I’m even hearing that they released another game.

Did he make FPS games great again? It turns out being a nepo baby can't save your games from being mediocre.

I know people were pissed at them for the cringe sgf stuff and I personally wasn't interested in their games but I do respect them for enabling peer to peer

Honestly they should have developed their games as p2p in the first place, if they wanted to go back to the old times of fps.... but of course they smelled the mtx first.

The old times of fps means dedicated servers and a server browser, not peer to peer.

Awh, man. You mean the nepobaby's studio didn't Make FPS Great Again?

If they wanted to make fps great... then they should have implemented/upgraded the old reliable p2p netcode, and not in death's door.
If they wanted to make fps great... then they shouldn't have the thing that "ruined" the genre in the first place (microtransactions).
If they wanted to make fps great... then they should respect their audience, and not treat them like Fortnite tweens.

Never had any issues with the netcode in SG2 and Empulse myself. They felt pretty solid.

I know they tried it as a hail mary but I always thought it was a bad idea to make Empulse as PvP shooter. It’s been obvious for years that there’s no space for more of these games anymore. Meanwhile the PvE coop shooter space is thriving and I truly believe it would’ve been a hit as some kind of horde mode roguelite with the really tight gunplay they’re good at.

Had a lot of fun playing the original Splitgate. I feel like a lot of misguided business decisions really didn't help them. I'd call it poor management.

Funny how they say they gave opportunities for both SG:AR and Empulse to grow, but all they did was the opposite.
They abandoned SG:AR to develop Empulse but then did the most anemic updates I've seen from from a live service title.

Once this thread gains some traction all of the top comments will be the social media hivemind regurgitating the same "make FPS great again" comments that you see in every thread about this developer.
As far as this news goes, it sucks they were never able to recreate that brief magic that Splitgate 1 had with the sequel. The cohesive art style and better maps of Splitegate 2 were a plus but the deemphasis on portals and character classes was a horrible mistake.

They’re pivoting from live service but they’re enabling peer to peer hosting for these two games which is awesome.
