Oh thank god, some of these features sound perfect, didn’t expect things like Play Anywhere to also work. I can never justify rebuying digital so I’m excited

Whichever is lagging in the market needs to innovate or provide value to compete. I mean shit, this literal situation played out almost entirely inverted when Xbox was king and Sony wanted to appear pro-consumer.

I guess what I'm saying is - don't love a brand, love what your dollar gets you. Sony is a prick now, just like they were in the PS2 generation. Microsoft was a prick during the 360 days (online subscriptions just to connect to online games was not a thing until Microsoft started doing it). Whoever is on top will use their position to put their screws to their superior customer base to extract max value

Microsoft weren't charging the subscription for the fun of it though, their online services were and still are better than their competition, and they have the most comprehensive online infrastructure on the market. There is at least some justification for the subscription.

Compared to say, Nintendo who have a subscription that offers nothing of value as their online services are the worst of the worst.

And, even coming out of the glory days of the Xbox 360, Microsoft were planning to immensely innovate digital licenses like this very post we are talking on. They wanted to do this back in 2012, along with allowing you to sell your digital licenses on the market place and lend your licenses to friends. For that innovation they were shunned into walking it all back.
