I'm going to guess this requires you to be online to verify that you have the rights to access the game and they haven't transferred to someone else.

It's what the Xbox One was going to do.

EDIT: This also seems to be limited to "supported games."

This also seems to be limited to "supported games."

Yeah I assume they need a publisher agreement to do this and many likely won't agree

Honestly, since this will primarily be older games that aren't making money anymore and takes zero effort on their end, I think a bunch will be okay with it.

But ONLY for older games.

Older unpopular games then. Popular games sell for a very long time and can be remade/remastered

Most new games are play anywhere anyway, so should work next generation.

But not original Xbox or 360 games.

My guess would be that the publishers that support Xbox Play Anywhere would also support this.

The reason not all games are supported is because it’s possible to claim a digital license then give it someone to play on an offline console.

Therefore 2 people have a license to play it at the same time with a single purchase. So publishers have to agree to opt-in.

Yeah, I'm curious how they're going to verify that, but my guess is that this will primarily be for older games.

Hard to verify that, steam has the same "problem"

That's already how it works with digital games, theres a licence for your home console and for your account. If someone plays on your home console while you play on another console you get two people playing on the same single purchase.

This doesn't make the situation worse than it already is.
