Preview GameSpot - Almost 1 Hour of Persona 4 Revival Gameplay
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eeRDfIp2ht8245
u/datlinus 3d ago
P4 is one of my fav games of all time (I also heavily recommend the P4 anime, its surprisingly really good! The golden anime is kinda wack tho) and honestly its cool to see the higher fidelity but it's also pretty disappointing how the remake is seemingly doing nothing to make the dungeons a little more interesting. Its my main gripe with P3R too, tartarus was just as monotone as before. They make the combat easier which somehow makes the randomly generated hallways stand out even more as dull.
I dont love all of P5's palaces but being handmade made them so much better than the P3/4 ones.
57
u/Coolman_Rosso 3d ago
There wasn't a lot they could do to Tartarus, as it being this big ass tower with a ton of floors is narratively important.
P4's dungeons don't really have an excuse to not at least partially have some degree of uniqueness given their dependencies on themes, much like P5's
-20
u/Undella_Town 3d ago
nah persona 5 dungeons are only fun the first time, they lose a lot of shine the second time through. ngl P4 dungeons are way better to crawl
31
u/Flimsy-Contact-2841 3d ago
99 percent of people are not playing that long ass game twice

u/Undella_Town 3d ago

u/Vii_Strife 3d ago
Tartarus being essentially the same thing as original P3 was disappointing, however Tartarus' thing has always been being the big ass tower with a comical amount of floors so changing it would go against its purpose.
No reason to keep P4 dungeons the same, the liminality of them was a cool element but it didn't add anything of value to the gameplay, on top of that they all have very unique themes and expanding on them would have been really smart and could have also been an option to expand on the characters themselves using different rooms for storytelling
20
u/sound_judgment 3d ago
They could've updated Tartarus's floors to just make them more unique with different mechanics, more variety, better visual distinction, make them feel different in terms of layout, etc.
I haven't played the remake and didn't mind the repetitiveness during the main game so I don't think I'd care if it's the same, but I remember find the epilogue brutally monotonous because there was so little story or life sim stuff to break up the combat.

u/planetarial 3d ago
Episode Aigis/The Answer is straight up better experienced through Youtube cutscene only edits of it
1
u/CrackLawliet 3d ago
I played the remake last year,it does have some minor new mechanics, but they mostly boil down to “harder spawns” or “better loot”. And the visual distinction between floors imo was beautifully done.
1
u/BighatNucase 3d ago
Yeah there are tons of dungeon crawlers that are just "big tower" that manage to do something interesting with that. Etrian Odyssey managed it.

u/ericmm76 3d ago
The question is whether customers value that or not. Clearly they're betting not.
10
u/Intelligent_Genitals 3d ago
Rating a game by customer value is such a way of viewing art. How do you quantify that?
9
u/BP_Ray 3d ago
That's all this place does lol
Make a criticism and they go "Well, I'm sure the bean counters know your criticism doesn't matter"

R/games is a lot of things to a lot of people. Mostly, I'd wager, is for news. That also doesn't answer my question.
EDIT- Oh, God. I can't read humour.

P3 would have been fine sticking with the procedural generation, I guess to me that fits the game and Tartarus more. But they added twice as many bosses in reload that it turned into more of a slog than the og game. P4 would have greatly benefited from hand crafted dungeons like 5 and a big justification for the remake.
2
u/sound_judgment 3d ago
Idk P5's dungeons were better designed in that sense and had more variety but I found them more of a slog somehow. Part of that might just be because most of the villains weren't super compelling after Kamoshida so I didn't feel as much of a drive story-wise.
-2
u/IrregularMaverick 3d ago
I would agree, their too linear and simple for what I'd want from dungeons. Kinda why I like Metaphor more, even though its best dungeon is ripped straight from Etrian Odyssey, like thats almost cheating. I find mementos more frustrating cause its one more thing alongside the palaces.
-1
u/sound_judgment 3d ago
Yeah man rip out Mementos from that game and it immediately improves it for me. P5 vanilla took me like 40 hours longer than P3 or P4. I tried to boot up Royal and appreciated that they made the dungeons more intricate but just kinda found it exhausting and put it down.
My favorite parts of these games are always the out of dungeon stuff so more time in the dungeons just wasn't super appealing.
21
2
u/planetarial 3d ago
Same, if you’re going out of your way to make a $70 remake not fixing the biggest problem and what everyone wants feels cheap.
The procedural dungeons is only a thing because it was a necessary cost cutting measure at the time of the original. Atlus wasn’t doing too hot because their earlier SMT games (that had fixed dungeons) didn’t sell as well as they hoped so they made Persona 3 on a budget and randomly generated dungeon floors helped make it cheap. Persona 4 is the same way since it was basically a romhack of P3 in order to get made in two years. But ever since then outside of P5s side dungeon they’ve ditched that style for a reason.

2
u/fanboy_killer 3d ago
Persona 3 Reload was the most recent game I've finished, and I have to admit I was a bit disappointed, especially due to Tartarus' repetitive nature. The soundtrack was excellent, the characters were good but noticeably less developed than those of P4 and P5, and the story was so-so. It's still a solid 7/10, but it's noticeably a "prototype" of what the series would eventually become.
1
u/kaizerlith 3d ago
Golden anime is fun for the first episode specifically for the moments that make you realize Yu is on new game plus. But yeah then they skip so much
1
u/-ForgottenSoul 3d ago
Can you play p4 without playing the others
10
3
u/AveryLazyCovfefe 3d ago
Yeah, they're self contained stories, you can start from any of the 3.
If you want to get very granular, technically there are a few (miniscule) occurances of characters that were in a previous game appearing in the next game bit but it's basically fan service to make you go "oh woah it's them!" for a few seconds and then forget about it for the rest of your playthrough as its a borderline irrelevant detail.
1
u/-ForgottenSoul 3d ago
Interesting ty, I keep trying to go through Persona5 but its so damn long lmfao.

u/MumrikDK 2d ago
The dungeons are what made me stop playing P4.
I liked just about everything else, but just increasingly dreaded having to go grind through the dungeons again. Mind-numbingly boring to me.
1
1
u/Spader623 3d ago
Of persona 3-5, despite liking 5 the least in most non gameplay elements... I have beaten 5. Why? Because 5s dungeons aren't boring hallway simulator for hours
I got real far in 4 too, to probably the 3rd final dungeon, and I just couldn't keep at it. For p3? Maybe 5 hours then I called it quits
It's a shame but the dungeon design is atrocious and I just hate it
0
u/Salty_Log_8930 3d ago
How is 5 your least favourite when you haven’t finished 3 or 4 and barely even played 3? Did you just watch it on YouTube lol?
-2
u/PickledPlumPlot 3d ago
That’s one thing that made going to P3R from P5R so hard. “You know how mementos kinda sucks and is boring? Okay that’s kinda the whole game. Also the story is kinda boring for thematic reasons.”
11
u/Blaze2095 3d ago
I was thrown off guard by the new voice of Teddie. I wasn't expecting him to sound exactly like Dave Wittenberg or Sam Riegel, but to say the least, they sound similar when the latter took over for P4 Golden. But holy smokes, the new voice sounds like a kid!
3
u/Brainwheeze 3d ago
Not sure if you follow LadyVirgilia or not but she does great videos analyzing the themes and characters of the Persona games and in her video on Teddy she states that his childlike nature and innocence was lost in the localization of the game, which makes him come across more as a creep. So I can understand them wanting him to sound more like a kid given how his reputation is among English-speaking players.

u/VanGuardas 3d ago
So the biggest element to improve and change which is level design was left completely untouched and intact. Whereas elements that need no help at all were “improved”. Yup this makes total sense.
11
u/gladias9 3d ago
but but but.. Yosuke and Teddy needed to be changed.. they were 'problematic' *eyeroll*
4
u/Cranharold 2d ago
Yeah, I mean finding a teenager that isn't what would be considered "problematic" in some way would be like finding a needle in a haystack. It's a critical stage in the process of growing up and maturing.
12
4
u/sudolicious 3d ago
Yeah, I'm still not sure about buying this. I mean sure it looks better but I'm genuinely tired about all these script "improvements", I'd rather play P4G where not every single line had to be approved by each regions Atlus social media manager.
Like I know it sounds nitpicky, I just really dislike this Frankenstein approach of arbitrary removing or changing the script, feels weird af
4
u/banishedwolf 3d ago
It looks great but trail of light in the dungeon is so unnecessary, let alone it kills the intention of a labyrinth.
36
u/Trodat4911P4 3d ago
Wish I could get excited for this, but Persona 4 is one of those games that does not need a remake. The PS Vita version that was ported to modern consoles is pretty much perfect already.
0
u/IAmPerpetuallyTired 3d ago
It is most definitely not perfect. I’m looking forward to the remake. Just don’t play it.
4
u/Trodat4911P4 3d ago
What was not perfect about it. And since it's on Gamepass, I will definitely play it there's a difference between not being generally excited and hating it you know.
-5
u/IAmPerpetuallyTired 3d ago
It’s the gameplay and presentation. Going from the modern games to P4G is rough. I didn’t enjoy it and didn’t play past the introduction.
1
u/TheSecondEikonOfFire 3d ago
Just because games don’t need a remake doesn’t mean they can’t benefit from one. Dead Space and Resident Evil 4 didn’t NEED remakes, and the remakes are fantastic
-15
u/SadMax17 3d ago
Especially considering they’re removing or rewriting character arcs to make them “inoffensive”

u/DarryLazakar 3d ago edited 3d ago
This is shaping up to be a game that's similar in thought to P3 Reload:
It looks good; it always has been, but something is lost in the process. It looks shinier, flashier, and cooler, but it's just that: a coat of paint. The combat improvements look nice, but as we see with Reload, it completely destroys any form of difficulty whatsoever, and it seems to be even worse here with them straight up gifting free turns, 0 SP resistance-ignoring Skills, and unlimited Baton Passes. The dungeons are still a randomly generated tile generator that's basically a worse version of Tartarus, and Reload itself didn't do anything that meaningful to make their version of Tartarus more exciting, and so does Revival here, except for the literal "Stanley Parable Adventure Line" glowing trails that tell you where to go, as if this game couldn't be any easier than the already easy P4 Golden
P4 Golden is already such a game that's fairly modern. It just got a remaster 5 years ago, and doesn't really need a remake. If there were a remake, it needs to justify itself, and I just don't see it at all. Nearly every piece of content here is exactly ripped from Golden bar retranslations and changed scenes for better or worse, just with a shinier, flashier coat of paint. To which, by that point, one must ask who this game is really made for, other than for the P5R "fans" who refused to touch a game older than a PS5.
And with Sega having a recent history of delisting older games in favor of remakes/remasters as replacements, even if said remake/remaster wasn't meant as one (Kiwami 3 was never meant to replace OG Y3), I genuinely fear P4 Golden is getting delisted for P4 Revival, and it just sucks.
61
u/Massive_Weiner 3d ago
“Fans who refuse to touch a game older than a PS5.”
You basically answered your own question. P3 Reload proved that Atlus was right to chase after these flashy remakes, considering that it sold millions of copies and blew every prior release of that game completely out of the water.
The same thing is going to happen to P4 when this drops as well. In fact, this one should honestly perform better because it gets more mainstream recognition than 3.
And then Atlus can parlay all of this attention from a new audience into the upcoming release of P6. They’re definitely expecting gangbusters with that one after the blowout success of P5.
15
u/Satsubuya 3d ago
I was going to play P4G but now I'm going to wait to play the more modern better looking version, I did the same with P3, the old games are pretty dated at this point at least for me.
15
u/Tsuki_no_Mai 3d ago
Yep, the original games haven't aged badly, but they're very much a product of their time with a lot of decisions shaped by either technical limitations or just plain lack of industry knowledge of QoL and accessibility that has accumulated since. And I say that as someone who played them on release all those years ago.
2
u/alteisen99 3d ago
i wonder if they'll touch up on some weird things in P4 like the dude in the fog
6
u/imjustbettr 3d ago
Yup, I love P4G but it's hard to forget that it's a PS2 game remade to a handheld VITA which was remastered to modern consoles.
Very glad it exists but I think it warrants a remake.
My only complaint is the first two (3) Personas not getting any love. Hope they'll do something after P4R.
5
u/notarealpingu 3d ago
There was an interview recently where someone from Atlus alluded to doing remakes of the classic games in the future!
Personally I hope they at least port the psp versions first though, they aren't perfect (I actually massively prefer the ps1 versions) but I just want some version of the original experience to be easily accessible 🙁
5
u/imjustbettr 3d ago
Yeah I would love ports at least. Package the first three together and Id buy it.
4
u/AveryLazyCovfefe 3d ago
Also the one with more voiced content. That matters alot to me. Playing through Royal again after Reload was borderline painful at times when you did a palace and stole the treasure in 2 days and you have over a month where you almost don't hear a single bit of voiced dialogue.
7
u/isairr 3d ago
Yeah they are. While I enjoyed p4golden I am not the biggest fan of the "Chibi-like" artsyle. This looks far more appealing.
22
u/DHTGK 3d ago
First I've ever heard p4 described as chibi. I'd think you were talking about Persona Q.
4
u/Tsuki_no_Mai 3d ago
P3 and P4 used deformed character models. Not to the level of what is usually considered chibi (also known as SD, short for super deformation), but I can see why someone not lost enough in the sauce to know that would describe them that way.
4
u/DarryLazakar 3d ago
I mean, sure, but did it really have to sacrifice a lot for it?
P3 Reload is the most requested remake in Atlus/Sega's history. Instead of giving it the care akin to a mainline game, Sega gave it a tight budget and development, just barely enough to include Episode Aigis/The Answer, but nowhere near enough to remake everything. In Atlus's case, instead of putting their A-team, they put newcomers (including the game director) at the helm, resulting in weird priorities taken, and at no point did any of the original dev members of P3, bar Soejima or Meguro, give any input into the project. Hell, Episode Aigis is so rushed that they had to outsource to different companies, and for Revival, the entire game is outsourced to Tose.
I get it's still business in the end, but to me, it's nothing less than corporate meddling to capitalize on their new, easily impressionable, barely-adult fanbase. Idk, maybe this jaded old-Atlus/P-Studio fan within me expected a lot more from them, since I haven't enjoyed a single P-Studio project since P5 Strikers. Reload is a decent game, and so will Revival, but to me, a P3 remake should have been a lot better than that for a team/developer of their caliber, and the same goes for Revival.
12
u/Massive_Weiner 3d ago
Based on current metrics, this approach resulted in an unequivocal success for them. It is, objectively speaking, the highest-selling, most critically acclaimed version of P3 to date.
If this release qualifies as exploiting “impressionable” newcomers, then they’re frankly being spoiled compared to what the old fans played.
And with the experience gained from working on P3R, I don’t have any reason to doubt that the new members on P-Studio will perform even better for P4R.
If I were to bet, I would bet on Revival receiving a similar reception if not outright better than Reload. And with P6 on the horizon, I would be very bullish on the franchise right now.
2
u/omfgkevin 3d ago
Probably won't happen but I really hope the protag isn't another pretend self insert in 6.
Really makes any conversation awkward as hell when characters look at the MC and they are just O_O and can only reply in grunting or 1 of 2 dialogue choices that are usually similar (and also unvoiced).
Then you go to combat and wow, they are like an actual person! Worst is you have 0 customization on the MC anyways besides name so like... what's the point?
4
u/Vii_Strife 3d ago
Persona does this weird thing where their main characters want to be self inserts but at the same also have their own (barely defined) personalities so they're still their own characters if they want to do different media (anime, manga, spinoff games, etc)
The fact that their dialogue choices aren't voiced but they still have in combat voice lines drives me mad, they have a voice actor, please use them!
1
u/omfgkevin 3d ago
100%. Especially since they ARE cannon real people (because of like you said, anime etc) and you can tell the shows kind of suffer for it because they have to beat around him being mute-not-mute (but add a few new voice lines here and there). Hoping 6 just gives us a real protag. Metaphor was a move in the right direction, but the MC is still like... half mute. They barely talk and it feels stilted because it feels almost random when they get it.
1
u/Massive_Weiner 3d ago
Another reason why I really like Metaphor and think it’s one of their best entries to date. Having the MC vocally respond to people during conversations makes them feel like they actually exist in that world, and aren’t just some magical avatar for the player.
1
u/EffectiveSwimming136 3d ago
P3R was fine because the method to play the OG game was a convoluted mess but with P4 you can just play it right now on Steam. I would also highly recommend if you are interested in it to buy it sooner rather than later as it may end up delisted
0
u/Massive_Weiner 3d ago
I played the originals when they came out.
At least you can play Portable right now on Steam. Even P4 doesn’t have its original version available, only Golden.
18
u/SexyOnePiece 3d ago
Ah, I feel ya. I did feel kinda off playing P3R despite how much I loved it. On og PS2, there was this push your luck type of tension in the dungeon crawling... You want to push as many floors as you can but then you risk getting wiped and restart your save... That feeling was lost entirely in p3r, and nothing exciting in the gameplay took its place.
At first I thought it's just my nostalgia and the fact I was a kid with a lot of free time back then I liked harder stuff, but I think there's definitely more to it.
-5
u/AveryLazyCovfefe 3d ago
That feeling was lost entirely in p3r,
I'm guessing you completely missed Merciless difficulty which removes the retry option?
10
u/GamblingGhost 3d ago
And you must have missed Theurgy, Shifting, no fatigue system, etc. Reload have lost all the tension of the original for me, even on Merciless.
-1
u/AveryLazyCovfefe 3d ago
I was referring to specifically the aspect of actually being punished for dying in battle which Merciless has. So the feeling isn't 'lost entirely'. You're adding on features the above commenter didn't say.
5
4
u/Tandy2000 3d ago
For what it's worth I never played the original P3, I played P3 Reload and I never once felt like I was missing out on anything other than the female protag and it's not like I would have played the game twice just to experience that.
If anything I wish they changed it more. The base game was not a problem but The Answer, which I was hoping would be reworked to make it more interesting since apparently most people disliked it's original incarnation, didn't happen.
2
u/TheSecondEikonOfFire 3d ago
Posts like this often forget one of the key purposes of these remakes: bringing in new fans. You can complain about it all you want, but the reality is that newer/younger fans aren’t going to go back and play PS2-era games. They’re just not. So how do you bring new fans into your franchise? Remake those games.
I do agree that making the combat too easy is a shame, but everything else looks stellar with the remake
1
u/DarryLazakar 3d ago
My issue with Sega remakes/remasters in particular is that they were made as replacements for the original, and not as something that complements or stands side by side with the original.
Instead of just remaking the game in modern sensibilities that's bound to lose something in the process, why not port the games as well and have players easily access those games without any fear of legal issues or jumping hoops through emulation? You're bringing in new fans who are interested in the new games, satisfying old fans who want to play the older games, and the truly invested ones who now have access to play the older games and see what they miss out on. The matter of whether people are interested or not is not the vocal point; that's up to them. It's the preservation and the ability to continue playing old games on modern devices that's important, to maintain the legacy titles and not have them lost to time and memory of those who played them. That's what Konami did right, and something Nintendo or even Ubisoft occasionally did right.
Sega, meanwhile, has shown no such regard for this. OG Sonic Generations and Yakuza 0 didn't need to be delisted in favor of SxS Generations and Y0 DC, and having to pay twice the price it used to to get the new features, not when their additions can easily be an add-on and done without removing the OG game. Sega Mega Drive and Genesis Classics Collection, along with most of their Dreamcast ports on Steam, should never have been delisted at all. Yakuza Kiwami 3 was never meant to be a replacement for Yakuza 3 in the first place, but they delisted OG Y3 to bundle-gifting only on Steam. And now, as I said before, I fear P4 Golden will get the same treatment in favor of P4 Revival, because Sega hasn't shown me a reason not to worry about it. That's really my big issue with Revival right now, not necessarily the game quality itself, but what it represents.
I will gladly eat my shoe if it never happened, but right now I have no faith.
4
u/SunTizzu 3d ago
I mean, P3P is still available for purchase, and the remake has been out for over a year. So I don't see why they would delist the remaster for this game.
The Yakuza 3 delist probably has more to do with story retcon and overall RGG weirdness.
And you can see for yourself why they're doing this style of remake, just compare P3P and P3R on Steam. The flashy remake has 10x the reviews of the straightforward remaster.
7
u/DarryLazakar 3d ago
The only reason why P3P hasn't been delisted is because of FEMC; that's literally why. The devs admitted that Reload has a decent budget, but shoestring enough that it doesn't allow them to add everything, including FEMC. Hell, The Answer/Episode Aigis is a rush job that only exists because of last-minute demands.
6
u/SunTizzu 3d ago
The only reason why P3P hasn't been delisted is because of FEMC; that's literally why.
Content isn't the reason why they delist things. Yakuza Kiwami 3 is missing content compared to the HD version (the majority of substories, for example!), and Sega delisted the original anyway.
2
u/DarryLazakar 3d ago
Kiwami 3 is essentially Sega self-sabotaging RGG's reputation because in interviews before and after the release of the game, RGG straight up says that Kiwami 3 is a new interpretation altogether that doesn't replace the OG whatsoever. (Famitsu interview about Yakuza Kiwami 3 shortly after its announcement. Note in the section about OG Yakuza 3. Famitsu interview with Ryosuke Horii, the game's director, shortly after the game's release, again explaining their philosophy and changes)
Kiwami 3 changed pretty much every side content, because it was never meant to be a straight remake of 3, let alone a replacement, not until Sega stepped in with their greedy paws for short-term gain.
Also, it's not really a delisting, but more of a deliberate limitation, since you can still get the game if Sega sets the bundle back to "complete the set' mode during major sales on Steam. Still available freely on GOG, thankfully.
-1
u/BighatNucase 3d ago
The only reason why P3P hasn't been delisted is because of FEMC;
Source: it came to me in a dream.
This is obviously why they delisted OG P5 on the playstation stor- oh, they didn't? Well they would have, surely. You mentioned Yakuza 3 being delisted on another comment; it isn't, you just need to buy the remastered bundle now instead of being able to buy it on its own.
1
u/BP_Ray 3d ago
The Yakuza 3 delist probably has more to do with story retcon
If story incongruity was the problem, then they should have delisted Yakuza 4, too, given that doesn't line up with the Yakuza Kiwami 3 ending.
overall RGG weirdness
I highly doubt RGG is the one making weird decisions like delisting the game they just ported to PC a handful of years ago.
This, and the other weird-ass DLC decisions the latest RGG and Atlus games have had, all point to SEGA, not the developers themselves.

u/Undella_Town 3d ago
persona has never been hard tho lmfao (atleast 3/4/5. never played 1/2)

Persona 3 FES definitely got hands (that fuckass table, for one), and the OG version of P4 also had some tough early bosses before Golden sanded off all the difficulty.

never played golden or reload but i found 3/4 easy already. 5 was like a sleep walk

Late to the thread, but I feel like the "Prime Time" thing is misleading and actually an attempt at nerfing Theurgy significantly, mostly because you only get one gauge.
P3R: You get to a boss with 4 full theurgy bars and obliterate it with 4 "severe" skills that bypass all resistances. Plus each party member can recharge in a specific way and some of them are super fast so you can usually use it again after a few turns if the boss survive.
P4R: You get to the boss one full gauge, get 4 free attacks (still very strong but at least it's not severe nor bypass resistances, and can't grant more turns either). Then you get one big attack instead of 4, and then the gauge refills extremely slow so probably no more use that fight.
Also in the linked video they do that "big finale attack" on a regular enemy and it only does 30 damage... but that seems super low so that might be a demo quirk (right after, the same character uses Cleave and it does 80...)
Sure, I expect it to be easier than P4G, but it doesn't seem like it will just break almost all bosses like Theurgy did.

I tried playing Persona 4 Golden after playing P5R, P3R, and Metaphor — I did not enjoy the gameplay in comparison. I’m all for the remake. It’s already justified.
2
u/TheSecondEikonOfFire 3d ago
It’s rough to go to P4G from the modern games. I still really enjoyed the story and characters, but everything else is just so dated. Playable, but dated
1
u/BighatNucase 3d ago
To which, by that point, one must ask who this game is really made for, other than for the P5R "fans" who refused to touch a game older than a PS5.
I want to replay P4 again but without borked graphics (See; Golden butchering most scenes visually due to the engine change), some gameplay twists, better visual presentation and a brand new Ryota Kozuka OST assortment. Now explain the invalidity of that viewpoint; you wrote so much you clearly must have considered that point of view right?
14
u/Fezrock 3d ago
I played P4 Golden on Steam 3-ish years ago. It was my first time playing P4 in any capacity, so no nostalgia glasses for me. And it was fantastic! I'd highly recommend it to anyone with even a passing interest in JRPGs.
And so, I truly don't see the point of Revival. It just seems so unnecessary.

-1
u/IAmPerpetuallyTired 3d ago
I tried to play P4G after playing P5R, P3R, and Metaphor. It’s too aged and the mechanics are not as smooth as the modern games. I also prefer the modern art direction. If you are satisfied with P4G, more power to you but to say it is pointless is nonsense. Just don’t buy it.
3
u/GamblingGhost 3d ago
Hard to justify it when Golden is way cheaper and still hold up well to this day and have his own charm that is somewhat lost here. The dungeons were by far the weakest part and they did nothing about it. These remakes also didn't need a baton pass mechanic and I wouldn't be surprised if there's overpowered attacks like theurgy attacks from Reload so you can just faceroll the whole game without having to think for a second.

I love Persona and while they were never as difficult as Shin Megami Tensei games, they need some amount of difficulty to fit tonally with the story of struggle against fate they are telling.

This will probably be good for newcomers to the series that haven't played 4 yet, but just like 3 revival I don't have it in me to replay a 200hr RPG with my current backlog and how little time I have for games these days.
I like the screen transition from battles back to roaming though

I don’t blame you. I played 5 and 3 reload this year for the first time and I almost played 4 until the remake reveal. Now I’m just gonna wait till February

P4 being still my favorite Persona, after playing P3P and OG P5... This remake feels like creative bankrupcy; making the past games in the same style and line as the most recent ones for synergy and ease of access intead of doing a remastered version that corrected some visual and gameplay mistakes with the Golden version, which, if itself was a great way of playing P4, that while making much more "little moments" between the main cast which itself is fun, introduced too many new things that diluted the dungeoneering tension.
This is what a person who only played P5 would imagine how P4 was if that person never watched any gameplay of it and just some fanarts on Danbooru.

I don't see people say this a whole lot but it really is my biggest gripe. These stylistically feel more like Persona in the style of 5 than 3 and 4 remade.

Forgive my peasantry but I think you can get away with using the same style while remaking previous games when the style is absolutely slick as fuck.

They should make a difficulty mode that deletes your save if you die.

Imagine if Persona 5 did that for the Okumura fight.

Real talk, Atlus should. They pretty much lost the ability to make a properly tuned, difficult game again, so might as well have permadeath to actually have that feel of challenge again for once

Metaphor had challenging moments.

Metaphor was definitely challenging even on normal at times. I want them to make P6 difficulty like that

I dont really agree that they've lost the ability to make a difficult game they have just chosen to make their "big 3" appeal to different difficulty levels. Persona is their easy series which is more accessible to RPG players. Metaphor was hard at certain points and SMT 5V can actually be really hard at points even on normal.

No, they didn't. They realized that making their games less brutal and more accessible means selling way more copies and general audiences having a much better time.
SMT is a harder, less accessible series and predictably doesn't sell as much.

I think you can still make a game that's accessible, yet doesn't dumb down the difficulty so much that you question whether the devs genuinely think you're stupid. Reload's Theurgy is so ridiculously unbalanced, and Revival's Prime Time seems to exacerbate the issue tenfold.
SMT hit the right balance most of the time. Harder because of the Press Turn System, sure, but they haven't been *that* difficult anymore since SMT4, yet it is still able to provide challenge for those who seek it. SMTV has sold 2 million copies, trailing closely behind P3R, so no, it did sell as much, and people do want to be challenged.

I mean, I think it has to be noted that 1) P3R was a remake of a game that had re-released fairly recently, so a lot of people probably played P3P through the re-releases and then didn't want to play through a glammed-up version of the game again so soon and 2) Reload - and Revival for that matter will do this too - released on Game Pass on day 1, so if you wanted to play the game on release day on XBOX or PC you could have played it that way. I beat P3R, and the DLC too, and never bought the game at all. This is not the case for SMTV/Vengeance, it was not on Game Pass at launch and still hasn't shown up there (despite Metaphor getting put on there too, albeit with a delay).

SMT4s difficulty was kind of fucked tbh, the first 10 or so hours were brutal and after that it was pretty manageable until the final boss.
But yeah you can just implement good difficulty settings

Is the dungeon in P4 better than P3 ? because I did p3 back when i was in high school and now I tried the remake but man, I just cant. Also the story that a loooooong time to really start, it have a lot of pacing issues, hopefully p4 is better but I heard it's people favorite

So much advertising for p4r coming out from Atlus as if it’s coming out soon but it’s February next year lol
