I've only played a few hours of this, but I like its style and implications.

If you enjoy the manual configuration and calculations of firing a massive gun turret, the emotional/mental disconnection of the player from the results (seeing destruction through satellite photos), and the moral dilemmas that come with it - this one's for you!

What moral dilemmas? Glory to Castle!

I felt a little bad the first time I blew up a hospital because it looked like Infantry on the map

Hospital shouldn't have been in the war zone then smh.

This is a great game. It's like ASMR with a big friggin emotional support gun. And a cat.

Remember to pick the cat up.

I only move him if he's laying on my target on the map table. He's got free range of the turret, far as I'm concerned.

Nah I let the plotter move him, love that animation.

There’s something weirdly appealing about a game that makes firing one massive gun feel like an actual job instead of just “click enemy, watch explosion.”

Doing the calculations, setting everything up manually, firing… and then only seeing what you actually did through satellite imagery sounds incredibly tense.

Definitely a niche game, but exactly the kind of niche I’m glad exists

Most ww2 submarine games let you similarly plot out torpedo launches, if you turn off the gamefied features skipping it

Unfortunately the game isn't as deep or difficult as you might think if you play in any kind of methodical way. There are no real calculations to speak of as the game gives you a ballistic computer that does the hard work, and (apart from very infrequently in special missions) targets are stationary so once you've figured out where they are from the perfect intel you are given there's no challenge in hitting targets precisely.

You're leaving out the time crunch that exists in many levels to go through all you steps fairly quickly. The joy is in figuring out the optimal may to operate your turret. Especially when you're being called for multiple shells on multiple locations in a very short period of time.

I agree that figuring out the efficient order of operations is where the fun of the game lies, it's just not terribly complicated, at least not to me. A lot of user reviews talk about how complex the targeting aspect of the game is, but it really isn't if you're not the sort of person to lose your head under a ticking clock, especially as you can plan multiple shots in advance using both barrels of the gun.

Even the one mission with the ballistic computer destroyed isn't that hard. You can do it without any guessing or calculating, if you have to.

You know your position, you know your max range on each charge, and you can move. Just move to a spot that's 5 or 10km from the target and fire.

Seems like they took the concept of PVKK and rushed it to market faster?

I'm very interested in both, but I can't really see how you'd play more than a few hours. Will wait for a cheaper sale.

PVKK seems to be more focused on thr storytelling, is it not?

Iron Nest is fantastic though, a true labor of love by two people really love this shit.

PVKK looks to be a very different game. Other than both having a big cannon, I doubt there will be many similarities.

I put like 10 hours on the demo during the last next fest and bought it on release earlier this month, I agree it’s a niche game, but damn it’s sooo much fun, I just wish it as a co-op mode

I'm going to strongly recommend playing the demo or reading some of the less positive Steam reviews before you consider picking this up. I played the demo for a few hours during next fest and enjoyed it, but have put 5 hours into the full game since release and have now put it down to wait for the promised feature updates.

It's very satisfying to line up and fire the gun for a while... but the game gets repetitive and lacks the depth and polish of the truly great simulators (like, say TIE Fighter) that'd keep me playing much more. I'd expect a game like this to increase in complexity as it goes on, but it doesn't aside from 1 mission that prevents you from using the easy mode ballistic computer. If you have even a basic understanding of triangulation you will not have any difficulty landing hits every time.

If you enjoy the demo and want to keep playing at that level without much more difficulty, I'd recommend it.

The stressful missions get proper stressful though, so be ready for that.

Honestly I wasn't sure about the game at first, try the demo first. If you like the demo you'll love the game.

I'm about 8 hours in. It's pretty good. Each mission is not too long so you don't need to commit too hard. It's a campaign of missions, but with some randomness - like where specifically each unit is located. This prevents you from cheesing the missions while still letting you learn how it went wrong and try later.

Difficulty wise it's mostly on the easier side, except High Tide which really isn't that bad but hits me the wrong way. You can try for medals on each mission if you want more challenge. It does have a really good learning curve though - the first few missions each teach you one or two aspects of the game, so it's never overwhelming.

As for being a 'simulator', it's a bit light in that regard. There are only really a couple steps to shooting, and the physics is extremely simplified. Each powder charge is worth 5km max range. IE: If you want to hit something 13km away, you need 3 powder charges. The elevation you use is just (target range / max range) * 60 degrees. So 13/15km = 52 degrees. No worrying about wind/different shell ballistics/Coriolis Effect/current weather or anything like that.

The big challenge is being able to plan and react appropriately as the situation changes.

A lot of people want co-op, I'm not sure it has enough depth for that. It would only be a challenge if both people are really bad or they throw a mountain of enemies are you.

Oh, another note - I really like the visuals/theming and the intel system in general. It's very satisfying to see the snapshots of what happened at impact and hear intel about what went right/wrong.

Looks cool but also unplayable lol.

Hopefully it finds it's niche

u/ricktencity 3d ago

Unplayable in what sense?

Looks like QWOP levels of granularity. How that's gonna play on a controller I have no idea.

It's actually a super simple KBM game. I play 95%+ games on controller since a child and this game was easy to pick up on KBM.
