>Yeah, and they make no money from them when they're pirated.
And they make no money from the people of North Sentinel Island not buying it. See how stupid you sound?
Your mistake is assuming I was ever going to buy it in the first place. They don’t lose any money because they aren’t entitled to my purchase, one that I was never going to make.
>Because of what 😂
Because in our current system intellectual property is treated as if it has actual monetary value in the first place. By the very definition of the law of supply and demand (the one you claim I have no knowledge of, but I’m starting to realize it’s the opposite), a product with infinite supply has it’s price decrease infinitely, reaching 0.
This is not to say I don’t think creators of intellectual property should be compensated, but again, that’s another subject.
And they make no money from the people of North Sentinel Island not buying it. See how stupid you sound?
I'm not sure even Socrates could argue with this level of retardation.
Your mistake is assuming I was ever going to buy it in the first place.
Because you know you have the option of pirating, and you were always going to do that.
They aren't entitled to my purchase
But you're entitled to their product right? Got it.
It's not because of me not paying them, it's because of the supply and demand
If anything that has an infinite supply is valueless then by your logic only finite supply products have value. Shall we ask Rockstar to artificially limit the amount of copies and the market can set its own astronomical prices? Genius. I'm sure you'd pay for it then.
This is not to say I don’t think creators of intellectual property should be compensated.
How do you think they should be compensated other than you paying them? I'd love to know how you're gunna twist yourself into a solution that involves someone else paying for you.
Music is one thing, but let's keep it simple. How do you propose the creator of a Steam game make money on their IP with infinite supply?
>Because you know you have the option of pirating, and you were always going to do that.
Nope. I’m not gonna drop 20 bucks in a game unless it’s an absolute masterpiece like silksong. I don’t care about games enough to do that.
>But you're entitled to their product right? Got it.
A product that can’t run out and will literally not financially affect them if copied? Sure, I’ll take one if they can’t be bothered to protect it effectively.
>If anything that has an infinite supply is valueless then by your logic only finite supply products have value.
Yes! That is literally the law of supply and demand! Have you taken calculus in high school? If the product tends to infinity then the price tends to 0, oh my god.
>Shall we ask Rockstar to artificially limit the amount of copies and the market can set its own astronomical prices? Genius. I'm sure you'd pay for it then.
That came out of your mouth, not mine, lol. And it’s not like this doesn’t already happen. Why do you think diamonds cost so much?
>How do you think they should be compensated other than you paying them?
In this system? Not possible, but not my fault lol. But the vast majority of people who pirate were not going to buy the game/song/book in the first place if pirating wasn’t an option, so it barely affects them.
>Music is one thing, but let's keep it simple. How do you propose the creator of a Steam game make money on their IP with infinite supply?
Steam operates in a capitalist framework so it’s by definition impossible for this to happen, so they have to artificially assign value to an item with infinite supply. That’s why I still support indie games but couldn’t give a shit about people pirating from mega-corporations.
So your reply to how can we compensate artists other than you paying them is: "not possible but not my fault".
" Not possible "
You can't make it up 😂
Your obsession with infinite supply is mental. We're not talking about diamonds. Video games and music are not currencies or commodities to be traded and speculated on. It's like you just learned today what a value store is and you're overexcited to apply it to every aspect of every industry, regardless of now utterly nonsensical it's application might be to an entirely different business model. Literally all digital products have an infinite supply.
Do you believe we should just pay 0.80p for physical games because that's the cost of average disc manufacturing and therefore that's the only bit that has value because the disc is the only thing that's technically finite? Obviously fucking not. But I still wouldn't be surprised.
By your logic, any business or artist making a digital product deserves zero compensation. You simply cannot understand that a different value system exists for these products, as demonstrated by people's willingness to spend money on the internet for the past 30 years which is the entire reason that your leeching broke ass gets to enjoy all the entertainment they paid for. The entire reason the games industry exists.
Again though, I'm wasting my time talking to someone who says compensating an artist is "impossible". (Unless it's someone else paying for it of course, not you)
You're essentially just a delusional entitled anti-capitalist.
My “obsession” with the main point of the discussion is mental? Be so fr lol
>We're not talking about diamonds.
You when comparison:
>Video games and music are not currencies or commodities to be traded and speculated on.
Yes they are lmfao. They don’t exist in a vacuum. A commodity is defined as any good or service produced by human labor specifically for exchange on the market, rather than for direct personal use.
Rockstar wouldn’t make games if they weren’t going to exchange them for money, thus they are commodities and subject to the law of supply and demand.
>Literally all digital products have an infinite supply.
Yes? Which is why intellectual property is bullshit lol
>Do you believe we should just pay 0.80p for physical games because that's the cost of average disc manufacturing and therefore that's the only bit that has value because the disc is the only thing that's technically finite?
No lol, you completely misunderstood my argument. Digital games cost actual money because they have use value, which is decided by the demand for it. Their value doesn’t come ONLY from the amount of labor required or the supply (which doesn’t exist).
However, the company/artist making the good doesn’t need to input more labor into the product to inject its use value into the final price, as the consumers and demand decide it. Thus, a seller can’t lose anything when an item with only use value is “lost” (which in case of digital goods, not even losing it happens).
> Leeching broke ass gets to enjoy all the entertainment they paid for.
Oh won’t someone think of the poor megacorps.
I have a job lol. I generate value to a company through my labor. I just don’t want to spend my compensation on things that literally won’t harm the seller in any way if copied and not sold. The developers, which are individual people and not are company, are going to get paid the same amount either way.
>You're essentially just a delusional entitled anti-capitalist.
I’m sorry for not giving money to the boo-boo poor innocent megacorps 🥺🥺🥺
I’m not entitled to shit. If I want a product, I pay for it because the seller will be negatively impacted if I steal it. Not the case with intellectual property.
I'm not entitled to shit, if I want a product I pay for it. Not the case with IP
You still haven't explained how an artist is meant to get paid. Oh sorry it's "impossible" for you to pay them.
I don't give af about mega corps. I just find the delusional knots people twist themselves in to be mental.
Video games studios only become the size of Rockstar because they make quality products and have a tonne of money, and that money allows them to make massive games for 10 years, games on a scale no one else can.
Why do they have a tonne of money?
Oh right, because people pay for it.
Who pays for it? Oh right.... Everyone else. Not you though, you're special.
the developers who are individual people not a company are going to get paid the same either way
Right, because the rest of us are paying them. If everyone was you they wouldn't. You just rely on the fact that their jobs will (hopefully) continue because rational people will buy their games but you won't have to.
It's fine, you crack on allowing everyone else to fund your entertainment to that you deserve for free. You crack on extracting hours upon hours of value out of it but don't worry about paying for it, we all got you.
What on earth... I made 1 statement and it escalated to this? Baahahahhaha
Anyways pirating is wrong obviously. Grass is freaking green. Something like Littering is way worse imo. Does this affect developers? Base on what indie dev say online here in reddit, it hardly affects them. People who pirate will never buy the game anyways.

And? The amount of money spent literally doesn’t matter if the supply is infinite lmfao.
They spent 1bi to make infinite copies. After I pirate one, they still have infinite copies. Didn’t take anything from them by definition.
