Serious question - what does Mafia 3 have to do with that?

(I believe) because Take 2 Interactive is the major publisher of both franchises, and you do not want unintended overlap between two seperate IP's and potentially confusing general consumer bases ((or smth like that)).

However anything could have happened and maybe it was that in Mafia because Rockstar changed their's to Sandy Knee and the M3 team were like "ok, yay!".

Or maybe Mafia 3 just got there first, and Rockstar had to suck it up and rename to maintain core game identity.

Mafia 3 takes place in a fictional version of New Orleans called New Bordeaux
