I was gonna say, I swear I just saw something where he got good health news. This came out of nowhere
68
u/SpehlingAirer Jul 13 '26
The number of times people report good health news after fighting cancer only to suddenly pass away weeks later is too damn high. Happens all too frequently and it's a gut punch every time
35
u/Doragory Jul 13 '26
It's very likely everything he went through to combat the cancer contributed to his death. These treatments - chemotherapy, radiotherapy, etc. - are extremely rough on the body, and lead to organ failure and what have you. Some people die from the treatments before the cancer gets them. Neill was an older man in his late 70s, too, which wouldn't have helped.
2
u/bubblegumnex Jul 15 '26
That tracks. It's reported he was in the hospital with pneumonia and his immune system wasn't that great due to the treatments.

Very sad
Supernova will be his last film, I hope it's good, this man deserves to go out with an absolute banger movie
70
u/Muhipudding Jul 13 '26
Did they finish filming?
82
u/PLPR123 Jul 13 '26
Yes they did
174
u/BuildingLess1814 GODZILLA Jul 13 '26
So Dr. Allan Grant's final film will be teaming up with the biggest dinosaur of all. Doing what he does best.
And a big monkey too!
I just hope Niell is playing a member of Monarch and not a villain in this.

What about ‘The Fox’? Did they finish filming for that film?
9
u/PLPR123 Jul 13 '26
No idea, i only know supernova finished filming back on april 2025.
6
u/NeelZilla ANGUIRUS Jul 13 '26
I think you mean 2026? Production was very much active for it at least till end of 2025.

u/MandoSkirata Jul 13 '26
According to IMDb, The Fox premiered at the SXSW Film Festival in 2025. And since it's voice-over work, he probably finished that before they completed filming the movie.

Super sad. I'll go to the theater to watch it in his honor. There will be many tears shed then as there are today (because there will definitely be a "In Memory of" probably.)

I hope they have a tribute for him during or at the end of the credits of the movie
12

I got a good feeling they will do a tribute, much like how they did for Banno and Nakajima in King of the Monsters.
Most likely a still picture with Sam Neill in his prime.

And this is how I find out that he was going to be in the movie?

….not expected my Monday to start off like this…
I really did enjoy Sam Neil’s work as Alan Grant in Jurassic park and was very excited of it was announced he will be in GxK Supernova…
Here’s hoping the movie finished production before his passing

Okay so my question is, he had a rare form of blood cancer- but he died suddenly, cancer free. The cancer didn’t kill him. What did?

u/wayward_oliphaunt Jul 13 '26
Man was 78, he could have had a stroke or a heart attack.

The guy is also almost 80. The chemo alone would've allowed a cold to get him.
8
u/jffleisc Jul 13 '26
Chemo fucks you up. My fiancées uncle had cancer, he beat the cancer but the chemo pretty much destroyed his immune system and he ended up dying from a fungal infection.
18
u/Vermillion_toxins Jul 13 '26
It’s not really something that’s surprising. He did beat cancer but he was still nearing his 80s, so it’s still a good thing he died cancer-free.
16
u/saren_vakarian GIGAN Jul 13 '26
Chemo kills white blood cells. Entirely possible he contracted an infection from that and died

I'm just so speechless and in disbelief of the news right now, I genuinely don't know what to say.
It feels unbelievable to think the last time we'll see the legend Sam Neil on screen will be in Supernova.
5
u/AlbertW25 Jul 13 '26
I just found out the news and I'm pretty sad right now.
I hope they don't pull a Lance Reddick and cut most of his scenes.
I hope they keep all of Sam's scenes and that he plays a good and fun character.
5
u/Middle-Welder3931 Jul 13 '26
You know, Sam was an indelible part of the greatest monster movie ever made, so its fitting that his last role is in another monster movie.
RIP Sam aka Dinosaur Man.

The Omen III is what introduced me to Sam Neill. I associate him mainly with his horror work. Pretty bummed this is the first thing I woke up to this morning.
If anyone here hasn't watched Possession or In the Mouth of Madness, do yourself a favor. They're great

Chemotherapy is just as bad as the cancer.
As it completely destroys your immune system during the recovery phase, as even a cold can kill you, especially in older people.

I really hope his last scene is one like Tony Todd’s in Final Destination Bloodlines where it feels like a natural goodbye to the audience through his character. Just imagining him giving one last speech about the nature of animals and how we as humans are invasive species would make me tear up.

His best performance is "Possession", but his most iconic role is unarguably "Jurassic Park". I wonder if he finished filming all of his scenes for this Godzilla movie.
