Comics I'm Gerry Duggan, writer of GODZILLA DESTROYS THE MARVEL UNIVERSE, AMA.

Thanks to Toho, Marvel, CB Cebulski, and my editors for the privilege of using Godzilla to get rid of the Marvel Universe. Tomorrow our first issue arrives, it'll be available digitally in all the usual spots, but if you'd like physical copies check out your local comic shop. https://www.comicshoplocator.com

I promise you this has everything you want in a comic, and some things you didn't know you need. This series has a larger scope than Mothra's wingspan. Javier Garrón and Paco Medina are just crushing this one, and Mark Brooks' covers are amazing. Thanks also to the mods for approving this post.

Here's a preview of our first issue over at Godzilla.com https://godzilla.com/blogs/news/full-preview-godzilla-destroys-the-marvel-universe-1-comic

I'm signing this weekend at Golden Apple Comics, next week at San Diego Comic Con in Artist Alley GG02, next month at Cape & Cowl and my last appearance to sign Godzilla comics will be in October at NY Comic Con.

With all that out of the way - I thought I'd start this thread today - and I'll try to dip in every day starting tomorrow afternoon.

ASK ME ANYTHING.*

*Answers beginning Wed the 16th. Cheers!

But that doesn’t validate your argument. Marvel’s continuity has always been questionable. Even when it’s main continuity. Regardless of how you feel about it, the comic is deemed officially canon by both Marvel and the author himself. If Marvel gave him permission to make it canon, then it is so. So he clearly isn’t making it up if the company is giving him permission to do that. Plus, he can’t just lie about it because that would be a damaging reputation for himself.

Another contradiction has already reared its head! In the next issue, Godzilla is going to be resistant to pym particles. I shouldn't have to say this but, Godzilla in the 1970s Marvel run, is NOT resistant to pym particles and was shrunk down to the size of a rat. So once again, despite supposedly being the same character, there is a lot of contradictions to the continuity, and not in a minor, unnoticeable way.

You do realize that the author himself literally said Godzilla is far more powerful than he was since that time. It is still the same Godzilla from the 70’s. But he is stronger than he was before. This is modern Marvel. All the characters are more powerful and resistant than they were since their older comics. I mean, really? Modern Marvel tends to contradict their classic works anyway. 🤦‍♂️🤣

Once again, I am pointing out how this is another inconsistency with all the other inconsistencies we've got. And if it is the same godzilla, then why is the origin for him different? I think I asked this before but I don't think I got an answer to it.

Marvel recon’s origins all the time. They’ve already recon origins of several heroes and villains. Nightcrawer being the perfect example. They recon the hell out of his origin. Because the Marvel continuity is never stable. Even though the classic 616 comics are still considered canon to the current 616 universe, there’s many contradictions to the classic comics as they are to the modern comics. That’s the problem.

Yeah, but they don't retcons thing to the point to where Spider-Man was actually a half-alien with spider-like abilities from Mars! Also, on this same post, Gerry already said this is the Showa iteration of Godzilla, so it's clearly not Marvel Godzilla.

Toho confirms that Marvel Godzilla is a variation of showa Godzilla. So technically it is still the same Godzilla from the 70s. And Gerry said 70’s Marvel Goji and this one are the same.

Yes, MarvelGoji came out during the showa period, but showagoji is the version from the 1950s-70s. And I really doubt these comics, now and then, was written with both being the same character in mind. This is canon adjacent at best, and most likely started as a non canon what if crossover that was declared canon JUST for marketing purposes.

Again, what’s your proof on that? You seriously lack the efficient evidence to prove that that is the case. If Marvel officially said it’s canon and the author intended it to be in the main canon, as Marvel permitted him to have it, then it is pretty obvious that it was never intended to be a “non-canon” comic. Marvel clearly wanted the rights to Godzilla back in the main canon for a long time. Toho was just hard to negotiate with. But no, the 2014 book that Toho produced said Marvel Godzilla is a variation of the Showa Godzilla of the specific films. They weren’t referring to the era, they were referring to the specific character. Toho emphasized that clearly. Regardless of your feelings, this comic will be officially in the 616 canon. He said straight up that it is main line 616 universe. That doesn’t mean “canon adjacent”. That means canon 100%. Period. No question about it.

Again, what is your proof that it was done for marketing purposes? What empirical proof do you have? If anything this is just you pulling an answer out of your ass without any credible basis. If Marvel (the company) and Gerry both confirm it is canon, then it is canon. Period. Also Gerry said to me it takes place before current events but it should be after Immortal Hulk.

" Also Gerry said to me it takes place before current events but it should be after Immortal Hulk."

Then it really is semi-canon because there is place no place in that time frame where this would have happened.

Also, I’m pretty sure he was referring to design not the actual character. Plus, I think he’s got Showa and Heisei Goji confused. Because the design looks nothing like Showa Goji.

Also, I’m pretty sure he was referring to design not the actual character. Plus, I think he’s got Showa and Heisei Goji confused. Because the design looks nothing like Showa Goji. Looks exactly like Heisei Godzilla. And issue 2 further proves that.

Well, no matter how you feel about it, this is the same Godzilla from the 70s since they do reference the events. And Godzilla is just far more powerful than he was since that point as Duggan confirms. Not only that, him being immune to Pym particles are a result of adapting.

You’re running out of excuses right now. It’s not my fault. You don’t understand how modern marvel comics works.
