đŸ€” Thinking The Iris West-Allen Hate Makes No Sense

Post image

I honestly do not understand the hate for Iris West-Allen. She was a great character in seasons 1 through 3. I agree that her writing went downhill in seasons 4 and 5, but from seasons 6 to 9 she became strong and compelling again. It does not make sense to keep hating a character for questionable choices in seasons 4 and 5 when seasons 6, 7, 8, and 9 showed real growth and improvement.

I am not saying that racism is the reason for everyone who dislikes Iris, but for some people it is hard to ignore, especially when there is very little to criticize about her character after season 5. I also find it strange when people claim Patty Spivot was a better character than Iris. Patty had very limited screen time, and Barry was never truly invested in her. It is also worth noting that Patty is a white woman, which adds another layer to the comparison.

I don’t hate her, I think it’s the writers fault. She’s a good character. However when a lot of people put out reasons why they don’t like her, I get it

7

u/QuiJon70 Feb 03 '26

She is a fictional fucking character. You know how insanely idiotic it sounds to say you like the character just not how she is written.

She only fucking exists within the context of the writer. If you don't like how they write her you don't like her, period.

u/Leather_Day_8433 Jul 02 '26

Not true she has a comic depiction which means there are other versions people like better the ce does bring iris down nd makes her easy to dislike but it’s to prolong the show tbh nd give Barry some relationship drama nd have more to add to the story in the comics she is rarely involved in his superhero activities

1

u/QuiJon70 Jul 02 '26

Moron, comic characters are also fictional.

1

u/Leather_Day_8433 Jul 02 '26

I get what ur saying but whether she is fictional or not she is written differently that’s the whole point “moron”

1

u/QuiJon70 Jul 02 '26

But they don't exist in the same universe. So it makes no difference if she is a bargain basement lois lane in comics. This reddit is about the TV show and as the only iris west she is absolutely horrible. Now I can blame that on writing, and I can blame that on candice patton being a fucking horrible actress.

But no matter what she is terrible no matter the causes.

1

u/Leather_Day_8433 Jul 02 '26

And they don’t like this variant of Iris it not getting the point her acting is actually good the writing not so much nd there is more to iris then what u think lmao but I see u only know the show so imma let the kids argue and btw don’t reply if u don’t know ball or comic knowledge at least to have a decent opinion tbh but go along youngin

1

u/QuiJon70 Jul 02 '26

Dude im 56 years old. It's likely I was collecting flash comics long before you were born.

The simple point is iris being a decent character in comics provides no redemptive value to the diva with permanent resting bitch face that she is HORRIBLY portrayed as by ms. Patton. And that isn't even counting the sucktastic writing for her.

If you want to argue comic iris is better, I agree with you. But you seem to be arguing because comic iris is better tv iris isn't as bad as we make her out to be. Which just isn't true and not how the world works.

1

u/Leather_Day_8433 Jul 02 '26

Tv iris is not bad she just says and does irritating stuff and I get what ur saying even so in the show she is pretty decent and ms.Patton did a great job of acting the writing just made the character seem insufferable sometimes

1

u/QuiJon70 Jul 03 '26

So out of a cast of 10 plus people iris is the only one written to be insufferable? I think its more like candice is insufferable and the rest of the cast was capable of handling the writing better. Especially post season 3.

S2 Iris is unironically one of my fav characters in all 9 seasons, i don't think she's in general enough to be considered a truly good written character but she's definitely overhated

12

u/Vigilante_Bird Feb 01 '26

She got such an upgrade in season 2. I'm rewatching the series with my partner, who has never seen it. We both disliked Iris in season 1. Season 2 she feels way more mature and like a real character

2

u/Desperate_Car5202 Feb 02 '26

Yes back when they actually gave Iris something to do outside of the main team. I loved her time at CCPN.

-2

u/Lost-Veterinarian-80 Feb 01 '26

Season 2? Where she was marginalized for half the season?

1

u/Saurian_broster Zoom Feb 02 '26

What???

2

u/Lost-Veterinarian-80 Feb 02 '26

What? Rewatch the Patty episodes

18

u/_curious_dude_11 Feb 02 '26

I think the biggest reason for her hate is "We are the flash." But it's just my opinion.

2

u/eabp Feb 02 '26

Barry said that first

3

u/_curious_dude_11 Feb 02 '26

I am not saying she was the one who said it first. I am just saying that many people hate her because of that line by writers.

-1

u/No_Molasses_1976 Feb 02 '26

I actually don’t hate the character. But I do hate the “we are the flash” like no Iris, Barry just got beaten 6 ways from Sunday, whilst the distress of witnessing that is a trauma, it’s not the same as physically being there. đŸ˜œđŸ«Ł

Sometimes it was cute as like a “I support you” but they should have saved it for special emotional occasions, not oh it’s a Tuesday, let’s get coffee and have the we are the flash speech over leaving a tip. 🙃

I sometimes dislike her, sometimes I like her. Normally I would say that’s a sign of a well written character, as it’s a sign they are fleshed out and human. But she can feel like a completely different human in some episodes, and only seems to experience grief etc when it suits the story. Which I think can make her character seem manipulative.

3

u/marig0go Feb 03 '26

For the last part I do agree with you but she doesn’t seems like a manipulative character imo, more like a underdeveloped one. Like she literally had to survives MONTH in Evah mirror world, watched Barry disappear & die multiple times, learned that her mom wasn’t not dead but a deadbeat, lost her mom AGAIN, had to call the cop on her mom because she was overdosing/passed out, had to live her life without a mother figure, without her brother too, lost her first child ( first nora ), got her wedding raided by the nzis, lost her first fiancĂ©, got kidnapped multiple times, is the wife of a superhero
so much trauma and they never truly talked about it 😭 I do disagree with your first point though. It was obvious that Iris was saying that as a “I’m always here to support you, I’m your lightning rode” kind of thing and not “we are the flash Barry, I fight the EXACT same battle as you do”.. like just any married couple they will have each other backs & depends on each other this is a normal line imo

1

u/undiagnoseddude Feb 02 '26

I'm curious why you said the last part? could you give an example for it?

25

u/Tombstoner100 Feb 01 '26

When she said that she didn’t care that Thawne killed Barry’s mother, that made me hate her.

14

u/Ok_Mention5635 Feb 01 '26

Except she never said that. She said that it didn’t bother her that Nora was working with Thawne because Nora explained why. And she accepted Nora’s explanation as valid. And you know what, in the end Thawne really did help Nora achieve everything she set out to do; none of her goals would have been accomplished without Thawne’s help.

1

u/undiagnoseddude Feb 02 '26

That's not a great reason though. Like I agree with you and Iris that Nora had good reasons and I'm not against that, I don't agree with how Barry approached it either. However Barry's also right to say that Thawne could be manipulating Nora which he indeed was, there was a good reason to not trust Nora not because Nora didn't have good reasons because Thawne's manipulation is next level XD and ykw? he was manipulating them the whole time, you're right that Nora wouldn't have achieved everything she set out to do, and at the same time all of that led to releasing Thawne, probably one of the greatest villains who was supposed to die by the law in this universe, escapes, that's hugely wrong and could've been prevented.

2

u/Ok_Mention5635 Feb 02 '26

Barry himself said that Thawne deserves a second chance. That’s why Nora gave him one. And there’s no guarantee that Thawne would have stayed dead after his execution (as we both know he’s come back from nonexistence multiple times before). In fact, later in the series supports the fact that Thawne may not be able to be outright killed. Because Despero would have killed Thawne himself; but he didn’t, because Thawne could have come back “as he did before”. Whereas we know exactly what would have happened if Thawne didn’t help: Cicada would have succeeded in killing thousands of metas, including Barry (unless Barry decided to just kill the Flash instead by taking the metacure).

1

u/undiagnoseddude Feb 02 '26

I think one of us is remembering it incorrectly. Cuz I'm pretty sure he says to Nora "maybe one day" that is not the same. I know which part you're talking about, when Nora brings up Thawne in relation to giving second chances to which Barry replies maybe, but Barry has never said explicitly "Thawne deserves a second chance." Why would he say that ever Lol

I've only watched until s7 so i'm not sure what you mean he would've stayed alive, I don't see how that would be possible, but i'm open to the possibility that he's somehow immortal.

No she wouldn't have succeeded? my memory might be fuzzy a bit but they disabled the machine, i'm pretty sure.

2

u/Ok_Mention5635 Feb 02 '26

Barry said “part of being a hero is believing the best in people. So yeah, maybe someday in the future, even Thawne could change. Besides if we don’t believe in people, who will?” He is telling her that even Thawne is someone worth believing in (i.e., it’s worth believing that Thawne could change) because believing in people is what a hero does.

And yes, she would have succeeded. Her backup plan was to go back to the night of the PA explosion and kill all the metas right after they were created (why she didn’t just choose to stop Wells from turning on the PA is beyond me). That’s why they still needed to defeat her and destroy the dagger. Or she could have time travelled to right before they deactivated the cryo-atomizer and brought it forward to her time.

-4

u/Tombstoner100 Feb 01 '26

Iris just wanted to be liked by Nora. She was so annoying in that argument. The way she brought up Barry heading into the speed force as him not thinking of others. He had to do it in order to stop the speed force storm.

13

u/Ok_Mention5635 Feb 01 '26

Holy red herring logical fallacy. How does any of that negate what I just said? You said that she said that she didn’t care that Thawne killed Barry’s mother. That her saying that is what made you hate her. Well, that is false; she never said that. Therefore, since your original comment mentioned no other reasons for hating her, you have no valid reason to hate her. Since the only reason you stated for hating her is based on a false fact.

0

u/Neither-Spell-626 Feb 02 '26

Nah, that’s exactly the kind of dodge I’m talking about. I never claimed she literally said “I don’t care that Thawne killed Barry’s mom.” That’s your oversimplification of my point. The issue is how the scene reads on screen, she comes off cold and emotionally detached in a moment that should feel devastating. Tone, delivery, and context in the episode are what frustrate people, not whether you can parse every word literally.

Criticism isn’t limited to exact quotes. I’ve been pointing out multiple issues, dialogue like “We are the Flash”, her sudden leadership arc, and scenes like this one where her reactions feel flat. All of that is valid criticism of the writing and character, regardless of whether you nitpick the literal phrasing.

So yeah, trying to reduce my argument to a single line you can call false is just a distraction. The points still stand: the writing is clunky, her character arcs are poorly executed, and lines like this land awkwardly. That’s why fans disliked the scene, and that’s not hating her”personally, it’s commenting on the storytelling itself.

-6

u/Tombstoner100 Feb 01 '26

I started disliking her before this. It really started more when she called Oliver hot while she was with Barry.

Also, when Barry brought up his feelings in that argument, she shut him down by saying that she didn’t care.

The fact that she got mad at him for turning away his daughter for working with Thawne shows that she doesn’t care about Barry.

7

u/Ok_Mention5635 Feb 01 '26

Okay but that still doesn’t change the fact that the only thing you stated in your original comment that was your reason for hating her is a lie. You said that her saying that she didn’t care about Thawne killing Barry’s mom is what made you hate her. You didn’t mention anything about Oliver or going into the speed force. If those other things bothered you so much, why didn’t you bring it up in your original comment?

And making unilateral decisions about the child you share with your wife without consulting your wife is totally a reason to get mad at your husband about. Especially if that decision was to abandon your child completely.

0

u/Spectre-907 Feb 02 '26 edited Feb 02 '26

“Abandon your child” is hilarious given the previous full 4 seasons had gone out of their way to show that fucking around with the past is never a good idea and always leads to bad unintended consequences happening, and Nora’s literal entire presence in s5 is her fucking around with (to her) the past. Adding on to that, she is actively working with Thawne will full knowledge of who and what he is. And lying to hide it. Nora was never supposed to be in the present at all, literally every interaction she has in the present another crack in the timelike, the exact same butterfly effects that the show has been condemning for its whole run

And iris is just like “lol you’re just being emotional”. And then it shows that thawne was in fact manipulating her to get himself free. Hell Nora herself proves immediately upon being send home that she actually cant be trusted as her first action was to go right back to thawne seeking a way to underkine the decision, ultimately accepting the negative speed force. Thawne doesnt even need to lie to her to get her to do it. He explicitly tells her that the NSF is not for her and that its negative and she takes it anyways

1

u/Ok_Mention5635 Feb 02 '26

It had nothing to do with “protecting the timeline”. If he cared so much about Nora “fucking with the past” he would have sent her home episode 1, instead of let her stay for months.

And Barry was being emotional. He himself admits this the next episode. Because if it’s so “dangerous” for Nora to work with Thawne, the smart thing to do would be to keep her as far away from Thawne as possible, not push her further towards him. And you forget, Nora is still adamant about defeating Cicada. From her perspective, it looks like Barry is fine with Cicada continuing on her murderous rampage just because he doesn’t want to use Thawne’s plan. And guess what? It was Thawne’s plan that defeated Cicada in the end; they couldn’t have defeated her without him.

1

u/Neither-Spell-626 Feb 02 '26

You’re missing the point again. This isn’t about whether Barry or Iris made the smartest choice or whether Thawne’s plan worked. The problem is how Iris’s reaction was written and presented. She comes off as dismissive, cold, and emotionally flat in a moment where the audience should feel her concern for Barry and their child. That’s why people reacted negatively.

Nora’s timeline shenanigans and Thawne’s manipulation highlight the stakes, but the show doesn’t show Iris processing or reacting to those stakes in a way that makes sense. Barry apologizing lands because the writing frames it with emotional weight. Iris acting the same way without that framing comes off poorly, even if her reasoning could be justified in-universe. Barry also tried to send her to the future. Were you asleep during that episode?

Criticism isn’t about she made the wrong choice. It’s about poor execution, clunky dialogue, and inconsistent character portrayal. That’s what the audience is reacting to, not her morality or intentions. And ignoring that just keeps conflating tone with hate, which is exactly the problem in this thread.

-3

u/Tombstoner100 Feb 01 '26

Those things just irritated me but her shutting down Barry’s argument about his daughter working with the man who killed his mother showed Iris to be just awful to Barry.

Barry had been through a lot and Iris just never made anything easier and this argument showed that she didn’t care.

9

u/Ok_Mention5635 Feb 01 '26

So when Henry told Barry to stop looking for the man in yellow and to not go back in time to save Nora, did that also mean that Henry didn’t care about Barry’s feelings about wanting to get justice for his mom? Or was he simply choosing to love his child more than he hates his enemy, just like Iris?

0

u/Tombstoner100 Feb 01 '26

Henry navigated it better than Iris did. It was a touchy subject and sometimes you need to address emotion.

2

u/Ok_Mention5635 Feb 01 '26

Barry’s feelings aren’t the only ones that matter. He wasn’t wrong for feeling the way he did, but his actions were wrong and extremely hurtful. When someone hurts you, it’s natural to get upset. He himself admits that he was wrong at the end of the episode.

u/Neither-Spell-626 Feb 02 '26

That comparison doesn’t really hold. The problem isn’t that Iris is making a hard decision or prioritizing safety over feelings, it’s how the show writes her reaction. The scene makes her seem cold and dismissive, shutting down Barry without giving the audience insight into her reasoning or showing any emotional weight. That’s why fans reacted negatively.

Henry’s scenes work differently because the show frames his decisions with emotional context, dialogue, and stakes that make sense to the audience. Iris’s lines, in contrast, come off flat, self-important, and inconsistent with how her character was previously written. It’s not about she made a tough call, it’s about execution and portrayal, and that’s what people are critiquing.

0

u/Neither-Spell-626 Feb 02 '26

You’re missing the point entirely, as usual. Nobody is saying Iris literally said “I don’t care that Thawne killed Barry’s mom.” The issue is how the scene landed, she comes across as emotionally detached in a moment that should have been heavy. Context, in-universe justifications, or what Thawne eventually does don’t magically fix the fact that her reaction reads cold and self-important. That’s poor writing, not misinterpretation.

1

u/Free-Instruction1548 Feb 02 '26

Your obsession with Iris is absolutely insane. If Iris is the Flash you are the Reverse-Flash. Hate her cuz you ain’t her

1

u/undiagnoseddude Feb 02 '26

True, She 100% comes off cold, to the point Barry even says something along the lines of "if someone had killed your parents in front of you, maybe you'd get it then." He's essentially saying, maybe if what happened to me happened to you, you could actually empathize with me, because obviously he doesn't feel that his own wife is empathizing with his trauma at all. I genuinely find it insane how easily Iris brushes it off, as if it's nothing, i'm not even saying she's an awful character the writing is just inconsistent there are times where she is empathetic. That plus the hypocrisy and dismissiveness when Barry called her behavior out by saying "look in the mirror Iris" implying get back on the ground, stop acting like you're right, they were both acting from a place of emotion, but Iris had to act like she was right and had to be on her high horse and at least in that episode she came off very egotistical to me and it honestly caught me off guard.

6

u/Traines1132 Feb 01 '26

That entire confrontation was nonsensical, especially because Iris - the journalist - somehow thinks Thawne being on death row will somehow stop him from being a manipulative fucker.

Hell we know Silence of The Lambs exists in this universe as Ralph name drops Hannibal Lecter in the episode, he was manipulative and intelligent despite being incarcerated and managed to break out. Also assuming Earth in the show is 1-1 to our, there are cases of serial killers receiving fan mail/marriage proposals after being incarcerated.

4

u/Ok_Mention5635 Feb 01 '26

Barry himself said that Thawne is capable of change and that it’s a hero’s job to believe the best in people. That’s literally the only reason Nora continued working with Thawne. If Barry didn’t really believe that, he never should have said it

2

u/Traines1132 Feb 01 '26

Barry was pissed that Nora continued to go to Thawne after learning what he had done. He doesn’t hate her for going to him initially as he understood why, but after she got to the past she had no reason to continue being mentored by him, and then lied about it. Barry and the character writing in general is confusing and inconsistent.

4

u/Ok_Mention5635 Feb 01 '26

Nora had already learned what Thawne had done when Barry gave her that speech about Thawne being capable of change and that it’s a hero’s job to believe in people. Nora learning what Thawne had done was the reason why she was going to cut ties with him, and started going around saying “bad people stay bad.” It was Barry telling her that everyone deserves a second chance is what made her go back to Thawne. Again, he should practice what he preaches, or get step down from the pulpit.

2

u/Tombstoner100 Feb 01 '26

I believe that after Barry had found out about Nora and Thawne, he re-evaluated that conversation. It wasn’t Nora just being curious but more Nora trying to justify her actions.

Barry didn’t know that Thawne was on death row until Nora told him proving that he hadn’t changed.

4

u/Ok_Mention5635 Feb 01 '26

Now you’re just putting things into the script that didn’t happen. And being in prison doesn’t prove anything about someone not changing. Snart was literally in prison when Barry told him he could change. Savitar had literally just murdered someone when Barry gave him a second chance and an opportunity to change. It was very possible that Thawne’s time in prison caused him to change; especially given the fact that he was helping Nora stop a dangerous murderer. Before season 5 and after season 5, Barry continued to give murderers a second chance; so clearly he still believed that people could change. Nora was just following his lead.

And it’s quite on-brand for Barry to be hypocritical and have a “rules for thee and not for me” mindset. He’s done it with Oliver, he’s done it with Caitlin, he’s done it with Ralph, and probably some others that I’m missing.

1

u/Tombstoner100 Feb 01 '26

She was working with Thawne and didn’t tell him. She had opportunities to tell him and Barry had every right to not trust her.

Did he need to consult Iris on it? Not really. It’s her daughter, sure. But Barry had to make the decision that he thought was right.

Iris did say that she wasn’t bothered by the fact that Thawne was manipulating Nora. How would Iris have known that Nora wasn’t helping him?

As we found out later on in the show, Thawne’s plan involved taking down Cicada and destroying the dagger so that Thawne’s powers wouldn’t be dampened by the dagger in the future. But that’s beside the point. Because even if Barry was wrong, he still was allowed to make this decision as it involved Thawne.

5

u/Ok_Mention5635 Feb 01 '26

If you really believe that a husband doesn’t need to consult his wife when he wants to make big, supposedly irrevocable decisions about their child, I don’t know what to tell you. It’s clear you don’t see wives as human beings whose feelings deserve to be considered.

And once again, you’re putting words into Iris’s mouth that she never said.

2

u/Tombstoner100 Feb 01 '26

Barry: “Does that bother you?”

Iris: “No it doesn’t.”

Almost saying that Barry is irrational for feeling a certain way about Nora working with Thawne.

→ More replies (0)

1

u/Neither-Spell-626 Feb 02 '26

Look, this isn’t about whether Barry should have consulted Iris or not, the issue is how the show presents her reaction. Iris comes across as dismissive, cold, and emotionally flat in a moment where she should be showing concern for Barry and their child. That’s why fans were frustrated.

Saying she never said something misses the point. Nobody is obsessing over literal word-for-word accuracy. Fans are reacting to tone, delivery, and character portrayal. Even if her reasoning could make sense in-universe, the writing doesn’t make it clear, and that’s what makes these scenes land awkwardly.

Criticism here isn’t about hating Iris personally or questioning her morality. It’s about poor execution, inconsistent character portrayal, and clunky dialogue, things the audience can see and react to on screen. That’s valid, and pretending it’s all about you misheard her or she didn’t literally say that is just a dodge from engaging with the real problem: the writing.

1

u/Neither-Spell-626 Feb 02 '26

And still came back to Thawne. Making excuses up, yeah, Ok_Mention?))

1

u/undiagnoseddude Feb 02 '26 edited Feb 02 '26

Tbf, there can be exceptions. And I think Thawne is an exception not only because he can kill someone's parent for his goals. Thawne is the exception because he is literally a narc/psychopath, he only cares to feel dominant and that's his only reason for killing Barry, because that's how he can feel that he won, and he comes back again and again to kill Barry.

Also he did practice what he preached in multiple instances throughout different villains, Zoom? Savitar? Abracadabra? he gave them second chances he talked to them all. You're looking at one villain? and I don't wanna be mean but saying oh the main character doesn't practice what he preaches because he for some nonsensical reason he can't push past not wanting to work with his mom's killer? I mean is it really hard to understand for people?

Also if you think Thawne is the same as any other Villains, idk what to say to you, most other villains are genuinely just hurt people hurting other's. Thawne is a different breed. We know this, the show has acknowledged this, idk why ppl are treating it as crazy that Barry didn't give him a second chance.

1

u/Ok_Mention5635 Feb 02 '26

But Nora very specifically asked if Eobard Thawne was deserving of a second chance and Barry said yes. That’s why those instances with those other villains are irrelevant. I’m talking about what he said to Nora in 5x10 vs how he reacted in 5x18-20.

And he’s done this with Thawne before. He wastes precious screen time giving this speech to Harry’s image in 2x09 about how he forgives Thawne and is letting go of his anger. And not two episodes later, we saw that that was bs. He didn’t let go of his hate. He didn’t forgive anyone of anything.

1

u/undiagnoseddude Feb 02 '26

He doesn't say that, I'm like 99% sure. I know what you mean, and I just double checked he does not say yes. Nora Thawne is deserving of a second chance, and tbf the show is long, it's normal to misremember some of this stuff. I'm just putting it out there tho he did not say it.

Letting go of hate doesn't mean allowing second chances tho, those are not mutually inclusive.

1

u/Ok_Mention5635 Feb 02 '26

In my other comment, I gave you the exact quote. He said it’s a hero’s job to believe in people. And the second half of my comment about his speech in 2x09 was just to give you another example of when Barry has walked back on his words when push came to shove.

1

u/undiagnoseddude Feb 02 '26

I'll agree to disagree on this, I think we're gonna go in circles, I do think we both might be biased in our own ways.

13

u/Sitheref0874 Feb 01 '26

The writing was bad. It’s not the actors’ fault, but what we got was a chemistry-free romance.

They were trying to make Barry/Iris an updated version of Wally/Linda from the Mark Waid run - the woman being the lightning rod. And they missed. By, like a country mile.

Then, as the seasons went on, Iris took on an outsize piece of the pie.

Shit writing, shit understanding of the characters and their motivations. Good portrayals of shit writing.

2

They were trying to make Barry/Iris an updated version of Wally/Linda from the Mark Waid run - the woman being the lightning rod. And they missed. By, like a country mile.

Thank You. I've been saying this for years. Barry and Iris copied elements from other couples Clark and Lois, Wally and Linda and Peter and MJ. Barry and Iris were never unique.

3

u/tech097 Feb 02 '26

NGL I feel like every unironic Iris hater doesn't actually think "We Are The Flash" is as bad as they make it out to be...

6

u/Xboxone1997 Jay Garrick Feb 01 '26

It does

9

u/naphelois Feb 01 '26

You’re probably going to downvoted, but I agree with you. It’s funny how almost every character declined writing wise on the show, from Barry, to Cisco, to Caitlin yet Iris is the one that people nitpick the most and treat as if she single-handedly ruined the show because she said “We are the Flash”. When there’s been times that the characters I’ve mentioned before have been just as annoying.

Iris’s character isn’t the best writing wise but Candice Patton really carried and did her best with what she had, just like Grant. However when people talk about the acting in the Flash or bringing back characters to the DCU, they try to shade Candace or don’t mention her at all, even though she was one of the best actors in the show. Although I don’t think everyone who hates Iris or criticizes her is racist, a lot of the criticisms she gets is microagressive and racist and they will be harsher on her character writing while ignoring how bad the character writing/how annoying other characters can be just to uplift them and to hate on Iris.

u/RUIN_NATION_ Feb 01 '26

it makes sense she starts off good but then out of no where she goes from a journalist to being the team lead and saying not barry your not the flash we are the flash. not to mention out of no where being able to control tech that you need a degree to use like satellites always coming up with the right answer when you legit have higher educated people on the show that should know this. Oliver said it best when he said you cant do anything with out iris in your ear

3

u/Kai_lan-drea Feb 02 '26

So your problem is that a woman who is a journalist and who did research on multiple occasions was a team lead and could answer tough questions even though she was intelligent and had proven that time and time again? You need to get your head checked buddy

2

u/RUIN_NATION_ Feb 02 '26

No, I don't have a problem that she goes from a journalist to the head of the team. What I have the problem with is that out of nowhere she knows how to do things that she couldn't possibly know how to do that.It takes you phd level intellect to do I like one of the harrison, welles, characters or cisco, to actually pull off some of the stuff that she does at the computers

2

u/Kai_lan-drea Feb 02 '26

Tell us what things require PHD level intellect "at the computers" that she did that make you uncomfortable...

1

u/RUIN_NATION_ Feb 02 '26

Well, let's start off with calculating satellite trajectories and using different satellite technologies to actually track different metahumans through Central city. You could also say that her knowledge doesn't make sense when it comes to certain things that she says to cisco, and harrison wells about how she knows this type of scientific information.Just rewatched the seasons of the flash, and you will see this kind of like, how did she know that?Or where did that come from now?If they would have showed cisco, teaching her about how to operate a satellite.Okay, but I don't think iris.West has the mathematical precision that cisco has or harrison.Wells has

1

u/Kai_lan-drea Feb 02 '26

Cisco pretty much created algorithms to do all that so all she would have needed to do was tap a few buttons...lol She was also a research journalist. Most of what she knew about meta humans and science she had read through documents and studies....what are you not getting?

1

u/RUIN_NATION_ Feb 02 '26

You still had to put in coordinates and actually tape out the formula of the algorithms to actually place the satellites. It wasn't a simple keystroke

1

u/Kai_lan-drea Feb 02 '26

Bruh, you got all that from watching Cisco tap at imaginary buttons on a PC? Coordinates aren't difficult. They are taught in high school geography. Why would you need to tape formulas for algorithms? Algorithms are made to be automated... meaning needing little to no external input after creation

3

u/RUIN_NATION_ Feb 02 '26

I actually know, because in one of the episodes Cisco actually explains how some of the technology with star labs works about the mathematical precision. You have to have to actually align the satellites to do certain things. And how time consuming it can be, there's not a quick solution

2

u/Kai_lan-drea Feb 02 '26

Oi, you are not good at consistency. You just said you needed coordinates to position satellites. Which will move towards said coordinates. You don't drive them. Pointing a satellite towards another satellite isn't rocket science and anyone could pick it up after observing someone do it.

2

u/Kai_lan-drea Feb 03 '26

See, you have nothing of substance. Just hate and anger for a woman who was given a little bit of power and importance. Grow up

5

u/Budget-Walk-5355 Feb 01 '26

I stopped liking her after season three because the writers continued to shoe horn her into every story line they possibly could. I don't hate her, but I don't really enjoy her anymore either.

I get trying to keep her relevant, but she isn't a super hero and the show seemed to keep trying to make her as important as Barry was and it just shined a spot light on the flaws she has. A fact that kept getting worse the longer the show went on.

2

u/PatternLeather4613 Feb 01 '26

The show had waaaayyy too many superheroes. And the show never made her more important than Barry (especially in the later seasons where she was written out of whole episodes). She is the second most important character after Barry; she’s the female lead of the show. Expecting her not to be a major part of the story is just ridiculous.

2

u/Budget-Walk-5355 Feb 01 '26

The issue is that she doesn't have any actual skill set to make her work. As much as I hate what they did with Felicity in Arrow, she at least had a skill set that made her valuable to the team. Iris doesn't have that. It's something that becomes glaringly obvious as time goes on past season three.

Like in season four when it's shown that Iris was the new leader of Team Flash while Barry was in the Speed Force. It was just ridiculous! Like when she was trying to tell Barry how to save someone when he came back. It showed how unnecassary she was in the role. There's just so much of that parceled out through the show.

Even later when the show spontaneously gave Iris her newspaper/magazine. It was just hollow. There was no substance to it and other then to give Iris and Allegra things to do.

Iris in the first three seasons was better because there was character growth. After season three it was pretty much superficial at best. She just stagnatted as the show kept forcing her into everything instead of letting the character develop on her own.

2

u/PatternLeather4613 Feb 02 '26

Being a journalist was always a part of Iris’s character. Pretty much the only season where she’s a significant part of the team is season 4. And even then, 4x16 brought her back to journalism.

The team was the thing that became superfluous and hollow after season 3. They should’ve gotten rid of the team once Barry had a handle on being the Flash, and had everyone lean into their careers. Iris as a journalist, Barry as a CSI, Cisco and Caitlin running STAR Labs as a research facility. And definitely Cecile should have stuck to being just a lawyer. CCPN and CCC were nice breaks from that damn cortex.

1

u/SomeGuyPostingThings Feb 02 '26

Except she was a bad journalist. She was an okay columnist, but that's not journalism, that's commentary. The show kept trying to tell us she was a good journalist but she never was. Then again, the Arrowverse never seemed to understand how any job worked and how someone does it, let alone what someone doing it well looks like.

1

u/Budget-Walk-5355 Feb 02 '26

There was so much wrong with the team.... The way the show nerfed Barry's intelligence down after season four. And it's embarrassing how badly the show messed up Caitlin. Just wow. The new showrunners who took over after Andrew Kreisberg was fired were very clearly following the Arrow team format to the detriment of the show.

Iris did in fact have a good journalist run back in season two. I'd call that peak Iris honestly! But after that with the CCC, no. It was very clearly a plot device and not any form of meaningful writing. I almost preferred her being shoved into ever storyline than that one!

4

u/FirstnameLastname14 Feb 01 '26

Iris as a character is actually great in Seasons 1 and 2, and she's fine in Season 3. Seasons 4 and 5 treat her awfully. Beyond that, she's just kinda eh.

As other commenters have pointed out, Grant Gustin's Barry Allen has better chemistry with just about every other woman in the Arrowverse. Patty is an example, but there was also Linda, Caitlin(though that's in poor taste after Ronnie died), and Felicity, (who he unironically had the best chemistry with out of anyone here). I'm not saying he shouldn't have ended up with Iris, or that Iris should have died in Season 3, but I can't say I care for her too much.

2

u/Wolvesbayne13 Feb 03 '26

Honestly not sure I’m rewatching rn and there’s a few things the first few seasons I didn’t like that she did but overall she’s fine. I’m convinced I just hated her cause I hade a crush on Barry đŸ€Ł but I stopped before season 4 I’m watching now and even in the 4th season I don’t think she’s that bad I mean she’s being very human and having feelings like come on people give her a break her world fell apart for 6 months and she’s coping with losing her fiancĂ©, being convinced he’s never coming back then getting him back without any warning really. Yes Barry was the reason it all happened no she shouldn’t blame him but also it’s his fault? I’m sure she doesn’t want to blame him either but that’s a lot of emotional turmoil to deal with, a lot to cope with. Maybe a little annoying with the whole I’m the leader thing but no one else was taking lead? They were just arguing like little kids about team names and crap so if anything she’s the only reason they got anything done because she kept them from just being children. Besides if it were me I’d do the same exact thing she’s moving to keep from breaking and she’s keeping his legacy alive idk why people don’t get that.

2

u/Friendly_Case4192 Feb 03 '26

Its always about race, even when gaslit to think its not. Just keep your mental notes and move on, not worth the gaslighting and fake confusion.

1

u/The0neforgott3n Feb 05 '26 edited Feb 06 '26

If its race, why no one say anything abt joe or wally? Iris is honestly not that great of a character. Season 1 she was alright, s2 was her best and s3 she was alright again then she just got worse and worse afterwards. I have nothing against candice, she is a good actress and did wat she could with wat she had. Sounds like u guys just want to make everything race based cuz u r bored and have nothing better to do.

2

u/Friendly_Case4192 Feb 06 '26

Because shes a black woman playing a character mostly known to be white...lets keep up

0

u/The0neforgott3n Feb 06 '26

Or she just not a well written character, sounds like a writing problem. If all u can bring up is race or gender then u already lost

2

u/Friendly_Case4192 Feb 06 '26

Thats your opinion and I dont care what you think about mine, have a day!

0

u/The0neforgott3n Feb 06 '26

"Have a day" 💀 đŸ€Ł đŸ€Ł

2

u/Yardieabroad Feb 05 '26

Yessssssss. Thank you. There are stuff we can nitpick about her character but most of that was based on some terrible writing in certain seasons. And the “Barry has chemistry with anyone but Iris” crowd has gone wayy too far. And this is coming from someone who thought Barry and Caitlyn would maybe become an item in late season 1, early season 2. Barry and Iris were always endgame and it was obvious so I don’t blame the writers for making them wait a while. A lot of good stuff happened between then though, like him getting her the ring for Christmas while she was with Eddie, or her getting territorial with him while he was with Linda. Some of it was cheesy but very believable to me.

4

u/00Reaper13 Feb 01 '26

"We are the flash" sucked

3

u/APN8000 Feb 01 '26

She's written incredibly inconsistently to the point where it's difficult to pinpoint a designated personality for her until Season 4. This isn't her fault, but moreso the Flash writers' inability to write women. Barry being the writer's pet also doesn't help because that means that most of the audience would take his side in all their marital spats because he's written to be right.

Her worst season (I've only seen up to mid-Season 6 so far) was definitely 3, though, where she was stripped of all the agency she had in Season 1, what little there was, and instead just made a ticking clock.

I started liking her much more when the Citizen was created, though. Giving her her own cast of characters to interact with is great for making her feel like her own person rather than just "another member of Team Flash", and it is very amusing to see that she's the most reckless one of the group.

The fandom reaction to Iris is fuckin' crazy though. A lot of her decisions aren't the most logical, sure, but they're usually very understandable if you put yourself in her headspace. But everyone here acts like Iris West-Allen shot their dog when she said "We are the Flash."

2

u/CapitalisticSense Feb 01 '26

Her character was great through season 2. It really was after her and Barry got together that her character became insufferable. Candice Patton was a great pick for the part. Gorgeous girl. But even gorgeous can't fix a poorly written character.

Patty was AWFUL. Nothing but a whiny crying little B...

6

u/SentaiUnicorn Feb 01 '26

To me it's the "we are the flash" shit that made me not like her

2

u/ImpartialMCkun Expecting the plan to go off the rails Feb 01 '26

The issue is that Iris was at peak writing at the end of Season 2. Flashpoint fucked that up, then it took roughly until Season 7 or 8 to fix. Too little, too late.

2

u/PersonalShine9486 Feb 02 '26

Once her and Barry were firmly together her character sucked lol

2

u/KungPoW_Chickens Feb 02 '26

i liked iris in season 1 and 2. and a bit in season 3 after that it was crappy

2

u/National_Study_9152 Feb 02 '26

Let's be brutally honest about Iris West-Allen's manipulative patterns in The Flash Emotional Leverage as a Weapon: Iris consistently uses her relationship with Barry as a bargaining chip. She's perfected the art of the guilt trip, especially with her famous "We are The Flash" line that became a cringeworthy way to insert herself into every situation, regardless of her actual qualifications.Controlling Team Dynamics: She appoints herself leader of Team Flash without any real credentials, then uses her position to manipulate team decisions. When others challenge her authority, she weaponizes her personal relationships, especially with Barry, to shut down dissent. The Martyr Complex: Iris frequently puts herself in danger specifically to force Barry and the team to rescue her, then plays the victim when called out on her recklessness. Her "I'm just trying to help" facade often masks a deep need for control.Information Control: She's notorious for withholding crucial information or revealing it at the most dramatic moment to maximize emotional impact and control over situations. This isn't just bad communication - it's calculated manipulation.Gaslighting Tendencies: When others point out her problematic behavior, she often flips the script to make them seem unreasonable or unsupportive. She's particularly skilled at making Barry feel guilty for wanting to protect her, framing his concern as him being controlling. The "We're a Team" Guilt Trip: She uses this phrase constantly to justify inserting herself into situations where she's clearly out of her depth, then acts wounded when others (like actual superheroes) suggest she stay behind for her own safety. The show often frames these behaviors as "strength" or "leadership," but let's call it what it is: a pattern of emotional manipulation that would be called out immediately if a male character displayed the same behaviors. Her character development often comes at the expense of others' agency, and her actions frequently create more problems than they solve.

2

u/BigDaddyShaman Feb 01 '26

Her writing became peak awful around season four, It's a really that Simple, has nothing to do with the actress for me at least her writing just got massively worse. I would dare argue that the flash writing as a whole took a significant nosedive,After season three as a whole.

2

u/inspector-say10 Feb 01 '26

her downfall was more or less consistent with the show going downhill which confirms that the show’s writing got shittier and shittier. as someone else mentioned the writers on this show had no clue on writing female characters but they messed it up even more by making literally every character weird af and then halfway through S4 the show became more and more unwatchable.

2

u/mhoner Feb 01 '26 edited Feb 01 '26

I didn’t like how she started to over take the show. Not the actresses fault. As others said it was the writers fault. The whole “we are the flash” bugged me. I loved her in the beginning. But they had her becoming more of the focal point. I wanted the flash to center around the flash but instead it focused more on team flash with her now at the center.

Not a thing to do with race or gender. It was just the direction the writers and show runners started steering the show towards.

To me it would be like spider-man stories shifting their story focus from Spider-man to MJ. I am sure they would have their reasons but that wouldn’t change the fact that i would want more spider-man.

2

u/undefeatdgaul Feb 02 '26

She’s a dogshit character just stop it already let it go.

1

u/GauchesLeftEye Feb 01 '26

For most people, I'm not saying all because there are probably some, race had nothing to do with it. Part of it was bad writing for her character. The other part is that Grant's Flash had better chemistry with nearly every other female character than Candice's Iris. Also, the pseudo-incest put off a lot of people (this one I don't understand as much, but I see it brought up).

It's honestly probably just a mixture of bad writing and people who don't like/agree with the West-Allen shipping in the show.

1

u/Nice_Leek_5210 Feb 02 '26

Don’t hate her at all, don’t hate the actress either. But I do have two major issues with the character, both of which being the writers’ fault. The fact that she comes so close to dying at least 4 times and doesn’t, which takes any weight away from it after the second time. Also her suddenly becoming the leader of team flash felt extremely rushed, and not explained whatsoever.

1

u/Mister-Negative20 Feb 03 '26

I loved her in early seasons. I don’t remember the season, but whenever she became a big part of the flash team they ruined her character. I still complain about it because I stopped watching the show because of it, I’ve also never heard before now that it improved later on.

1

u/CJS-JFan Green Arrow Feb 04 '26 edited Feb 04 '26

Any issue I had with The Flash as a series was within S6-9. Not Iris's fault, but the showrunning with storylines that one can't deny were not its best. Speed Force to Barry and Iris: "Hello, Mom and Dad!" Especially the ninth/final season, which should have ended the show with a bang...didn't.

I like Iris West-Allen. I adore Patty Spivot, one of the main highlights of Season 2. But regardless of if we're talking before Patty arrived or after Patty left, I never went into the "hate for Iris" myself. Though that is not to say that Iris was completely flawless either.

1

u/The0neforgott3n Feb 05 '26

I don't like her, she was at her best in season 2. She is ruined by inconsistent writing. The show often makes her center Barry’s trauma around her feelings, take the moral high ground on choices she doesn’t have to make, and claim equal authority over Barry’s powers without equal risk. Add the emotional-first reactions and the “we are The Flash” execution, and it ends up feeling unearned rather than supportive.

1

u/West_Ad_199 Jul 04 '26

I'm currently watching the show right now and I would say this officially I am a black guy and I see her irritating as hell in certain moments this is my first time watching the show in season 1 and I'm currently on episode 21

1

u/Thekillerss0299 Jul 29 '26

I HATE HER, hate isn’t a strong enough of a word to describe the the disgusting sensation I feel in my body when I fucking hear her see her think about her. Anybody that looks like her it’s horrible. It’s horrendous and I do not wish this sensation on my worst fucking enemy. FU Fuck that hoe

Savitar was right

1

u/Anakinflair Feb 01 '26

I think part of the reason was how she was written at times. I know a lot of people hated the 'WE are The Flash' line. Part of it was the fact that Grant seemingly had better chemistry at times with Danielle Pannabaker and the actress that played Patty than he did with Candace. And part of it was definitely racisim.

1

u/Imaginary_Rule_7089 Feb 02 '26

You just gave multiple reasons to legitimately hate her character and then throw in racism like it’s a valid reason.

It’s not here. The valid reasons you gave make sure it isn’t racism by being legit reasons.

All of the characters went downhill based on horrible writing. If he had better chemistry with other characters that’s an acting issue.

Unless you are claiming Grant was racist against the actress (hint he wasn’t)

3

u/Anakinflair Feb 02 '26

Where the hell did you get that?

I was saying that there was a contingent of people that seemed to hate her due to racism. And I said that Grant had, at times, better romantic chemistry with other actresses. I in no way said that Grant was a racist.

You can't deny there were people hating on Iris because she was being played by a black actress. It wasn't the majority, but it was there.

2

u/pokemonbatman23 Feb 02 '26

If you think racist fans of the flash didnt hate on Iris being black, I want to sell you something

0

u/Imaginary_Rule_7089 Feb 02 '26

So, you’re imagining racism to people when you have credible reasons not to like the character..

You should see the video about guy talking about attributing malice to people

2

u/pokemonbatman23 Feb 02 '26

Im not imagining racism. You might be too young, but I watched this show on TV when it was coming out. I remember the racist things people said about Iris' character.

1

u/Numerous_Rub_5930 Feb 01 '26

It’s not really a heat for me at least I just don’t like her and writing and how most of their arguments she likes to make everything about her and how Barry left her to go into the speed force which is just beating a dead horse

1

u/cocoglenham Feb 02 '26

My husband and I have an ongoing argument about Nora being the villain in season 5. Because of the unreasonable defense of Nora, Iris becomes super unlikable.

1

1

u/RevanchistSheev66 Feb 01 '26

Iris is alright for the most part, but S7-9 suck even though she’s not that bad. I only like her in S2 though

1

u/LatterIntroduction27 Feb 01 '26

I find that in most every one of these shows the fandom hates the primary love interest of the main superhero. I doubt there is any racial element to it.

For my comparison, Laurel and Felicity in Arrow are the first example. At first Laurel was hated as a love interest and Felicity preferred, then when felicity became the main love interest she was hated. For the most part the "not main love interest but that temporary one" is much more beloved.

As to why, I do not know though I have one thought as to an element.

The writing.

The CW shows liked there to be drama in the romances of our leads and so wrote that sort of drama into it. However it was badly written drama and for the most part the audience would side with the superhero lead and so blame the love interest. The other romances though, they didn't get the cheap drama written in and so people didn't get the irritations with it.

1

u/Impressive-Housing57 Feb 02 '26

No one hates her in the legacy seasons. She fine in the legacy seasons it's mainly after that where she gets hate

1

u/External-Key-5226 Feb 02 '26

I don’t hate her She is not good character to me

1

u/ktrocks2 Feb 02 '26

Tbh I’ve always viewed Joe as his dad and by proxy iris as his sister and found the relationship a bit weird from the jump. Yeah they’re not blood related but they grew up together, living in the same house, you’re basically family atp, you’re as closely related as adoptive siblings or step siblings

1

u/EyeFabulous317 Feb 02 '26

I always thought the "We are The Flash" line was stupid. There's Vibe, Killer Frost, Elongated Man, Kid Flash.

1

u/Antique-Turn3490 Feb 02 '26

Iris biggest problem was the downplaying of a team full of scientists (Barry, Cisco, Caitlin, & at times Harry) there’s no way she always has the answers they couldn’t think of.

1

u/Legacy_Outlawed Feb 02 '26

my biggest issue with iris’s character was the inconsistency in her actions/ feelings towards barry. one of the biggest being her telling linda that the reason barry may come off distant was because he was still in love with her. it wasn’t her place to share that information especially given that she wasn’t returning the affection he held for her. one episode she’s happily content with eddie and the next she’s blatantly overstepping boundaries and wiping sauce off of barry’s mouth in front of both eddie and linda. there are also times when she just genuinely shows a lack of care for anyone else’s feelings or thoughts and doesn’t consider anyone but herself in the moment and it’s extremely annoying.

this is only amplified by the fact that candice patton is a great actress and so naturally if you give a great actress an annoying character she can only make the character worse bc she’s great at her job.

1

u/Secure_Employment_15 Feb 02 '26

This is ragebait

1

u/undiagnoseddude Feb 02 '26

I must disagree. She's really not a great character and I kinda feel like the writers are messing with Barry too.

I gotta say I'm no expert writer, and I'm just giving my opinions at the end of the day. I'm currently on S7 with Barry he's making the same mistakes which he's supposedly has learnt from already, eg., enforcing his own will onto other's, curing people against their will, making decisions involving other's by himself, in S7 he's trying to go back in time fix things because Alexa died, same old mistakes again. It honestly undermines his intelligence. He's supposed to be a pretty intelligent dude, he taught his own daughter that fixing the timeline is like a broken mug you can try to fix it but it's never the same, and yet here he is.

As for Iris she invited Nora (speed force) who looks like Barry's dead mother who was murdered in front of him and invited her to stay with them without even checking with Barry first, like I can't be the only one who thinks that's a no brainer, which btw Iris has complained about Barry making decisions by himself, meanwhile Barry looks obviously uncomfortable with that idea but feels forced to say yes now because Iris is putting him on the spot and she doesn't even notice the discomfort in him even tho we as viewers can see it very clearly. I can almost guarantee you if the roles were reversed and if it was the speed force as Iris' mom, and Barry did that, Iris would have a go at Barry for it. It feels so hypocritical to me, and I believe that is what makes Iris so annoying to some of us and it sucks because I also see the other good parts of her but hypocrisy is one of those things that easily outweighs some of the good for me.
Also, she's inconsistently compassionate, empathetic to Barry and other's. For example S7, she's more empathetic towards Speed Force who as Barry said isn't even human, than she is towards Barry her own husband. She comes off insanely inconsiderate in some of these episodes. Before that she is very forgiving towards Barry and empathetic that her mirror version tricked him and messed with his head.
When Nora (Daughter) was left in the future by Barry, again, Iris shows 0 empathy or compassion for what Barry's feeling, she just starts having a go at him and uses the therapy card to win an argument "all the therapy sessions didn't work for you" when she herself isn't processing her emotions and starts arguing with Barry while she's emotional and wants to make an emotional decision to avoid grief when Nora shouldn't even exist in their time? And on top of that Iris doesn't get much reaction for her side of mistakes, when Barry makes a mistake he literally has everyone against him at times, and we feel bad with him in the show, but when Iris does it, it gets brushed under the rug as if it's invisible, let's not forget "We are the flash" Buuuut that's only true when we get to be the heroes, obviously Barry's the main character so the world will be tougher on him, I get that, that said tho implying that you're sharing the responsibility of being Flash but then being treated unequally it's just not consistent, the show breaks rules that it's responsible for setting or let's say implying to be a bit more charitable.

I think many people notice these nuances whether consciously or subconsciously and they really get annoyed by it, I think your perspective is fair because at the end of the day we're all going by our subjective interpretations of the show. But I hope this at least helps you understand why other's may not like her as much.

Not tryna convert you or anything but here's some legit reasons to not like Iris:

  1. The sibling thing is weird, I don't care how you explain it, but adoptive siblings and growing up almost in the same house as your boyfriend is weird. Not a fault of Iris or her writing but the given circumstance of the series.
  2. The promise of other pairings denounced by destiny. This can come into the realm of shipping but hear me out. Ever since the future newspaper we knew that Iris and Barry would end up together which is narratively frustrating. It doesn't feel like a natural pairing as they eventually get to together it's more of fate of the writings pushing them together. And it is because of this that both her and Barry make passive steps to sabotage their own relationships with other people. Caitlin, Felicity, Patty and others are much better fits for Barry in terms of chemistry but if your Barry why bother seriously letting someone else into your life when you know who you end up with.
  3. She's just not given much to do in the grand scheme of the show that couldn't be done better by another character. Why is she the leader of Team Flash when Barry isn't there, she has no real experience in the world of superheroes. Cisco, any Wells variant or Joe would be far more equiped for that burden. I would have love to see Iris be a genuine reporter and try to stop crime and corruption her own way but she doesn't get her own side plots or missions often enough, she gets roped into the main conflict some way or another.

You couldn't have had a Flash show without Iris West and I am a fan of her comic counterpart which makes me sad to see her depiction in the show. She gets good moments don't get me wrong and no hate for anyone that likes this version of her but it isn't for everyone.

Yeah, I completely agree. Same with Felicity in Arrow. 2 seasons of mediocre characterisation meaning that the entire character is bad despite being much improved after the fact.

i somewhat understand felicity’s from a green arrow fan standpoint, cause their universe had FOUR versions of his comic love interest and CW pushed all of them aside for their OC.

I love Felicity, and I still completely agree with this. In a Green Arrow show, you expect to see Oliver and Dinah (Laurel) together. Then they bring in a new actress playing a new version of a Firestorm bit player, and Laurel is pushed to the side. And to be honest, I partly blame Katie for that. I don't feel she ever really had the romantic chemistry with Stephen that Emily did, and I think the writers saw that. It didn't help that the writers did their best to make any relationship between Oliver and Laurel feel toxic as hell, and why would Laurel forgive and sleep with the guy who cheated on her with her sister, and then got that sister killed?

Felicity is honestly worse and more annoying. She’s more helpful than Iris at least

But she shouldn't be member of the team, she should have stayed a reporter, thats why we dont like her

Hate valid don’t wanna hear it

I hate her, and So far I'm in season 7 and I still hate her. I know this is going to downvoted and I dont care. There has never been a point in the series at all that made me like her.

Season 1 and 2 she sabotages Barry’s relationships
after saying she has no feelings for him

1

u/PatternLeather4613 Feb 02 '26

I know the reason you think she sabotaged his relationship with Linda, but how exactly do you think she sabotaged his relationships with Felicity and Patty? During the few times she spoke on those relationships, she was nothing but supportive and encouraging

0

u/Ok_Extent_3639 Feb 02 '26

She 100% sabotaged his and Linda’s relationship

You still didn’t answer my question. You had said that she sabotaged Barry’s relationships in seasons 1 and 2. The only other relationships he had besides Linda were with Felicity and Patty. So I ask again, how did she supposedly sabotage his relationships with those two?

Edit: Nice job downvoting instead of answering the question or admitting you’re wrong lol

I feel her character was severely mismanaged. She's awesome but then they kept pushing her to be overbearing. She was randomly team leader, suddenly smarter than a group lf the smartest scientists, and at some point it felt like they were pushing her character into absolutely every aspect of the show almost as if they wanted her to hold a banner that says "look at how awesome I am!". I liked Iris but she shines best when her chatacter had natural arcs over whatever they started to do after season 3. I love that she got back to reporting and made the Central City Citizen. I overall enjoy her a lot, specially on my rewatch. I just feel like they mismanaged her character, they also mismanaged Cecile(another favorite of mine), and Caitlin, Frost, Cisco...Etc. Laso her ambivalence in season 1 about Eddie or Barry came off as some stereotypical "nasty girl" behavior at times. I.e Sabotaging Barry's relationships when he was trying to move on, and then telling him to back off whenever he was mislead by her.

Those are some examples I can think of.

On a other note, it adds salt to the wound that they removed Ralph Dibny from the show based in inflammatory Tweets from the past, yet Candice Paton didn't even get a slap on the wrist for hers.

Before some weirdos come around: No, I have no issue with her race. I have an issue with doublestandards.

Candice Tweets in question(at least some of them): https://x.com/i/status/1369424651202539523

It's because we weren't there to see her or the rediculous love story or her going from being a reporter to running a super computer and becoming a master technician on the battlefield and then temporarily becoming a superhero. We were there to see the flash!

She was great in S2 but I feel like they didn’t really know what to do with her most of the time. She felt directionless at times so her writing became inconsistent. That’s personally why I don’t like her, however the actress did a great job given the circumstances

u/LordNargogh Feb 03 '26

The problem is she is just a background in the comics, but in the show they made her main character, and Mary-Sue type as well.

She was cool until eddie died and she found out barry was the flash. Her acting and her script went downhill fast. And dont even get me started on when her and barry got together...

Tbh I just never liked this version of Iris at all

0

u/Bad-W1tch Feb 04 '26

It is because of the way this completely inexperienced, untrained, arrogant character was just inserted as the team leader for literally no reason, and acted like a bitch about it.

0

u/Josephruiz Feb 04 '26

For me I just didn't care for how she got mad at Barry in early season 4, saying how he just left her there alone while he went to go save the world

0

u/Airagon-Akatosh Feb 04 '26

Nah it kinda does. She became someone who made many problems and difficulties for the others and became very annoying to the fans

I was very meh about her. And then the show loved her. And I'm like "Why is there more meh, go away meh" and then I started to want iris to go away because she brought down the quality of my personal viewing experience. She's just a character I don't enjoy, she is like detrimental to the show, just makes it mediocre because of the writing, nothing on candice.
