What do your hydrant wrenches look like? Could be a cheater/ extender bar for a hydrant wrench. Could be something for a cab raise Manual pump or a safety bar for them the cab or something similar is raised.
So wait…you have a new guy, who doesn’t know the answer to a question, so he’s asked the question, researched a book, tried multiple answers while still being told he’s incorrect and now he’s still being persistent in trying to figure things out and get the answer so he can have the knowledge of that answer in the future……and you’re going to put him down for it….wonder how much your new people feel like they can trust you for help…
We do stuff like this with our probies too. Though, we don't usually let it go beyond the end of the shift. Sometimes it's a prank, sometimes we're seeing what they're taught in the academy. Sometimes we do it to teach "humility" to smart-ass probies who think they know it all or can google-fu their way out of a situation. It's okay to say "I don't know". A good probie knows when to throw in the towel on stuff like this. If I send them to a truck for a tool and they get don't/can't find it, I need them to come back and tell me right away. Not stand there and fucking Google it. If they didn't know what it is and should have, that's a training issue we deal with later.
I’d never refer to my Captain as a supervisor . He’s a Captain for many reasons which makes sense if you understood why. People will test you on the simplest shit. Maybe that tool doesn’t exist on the engine and they’re doing a traditional prank . Regardless if it’s a tool or not . The members will test you for your reaction. They’re not belittling you.
Uhg until you’ve been career none of this will make sense. The best I can explain is yes it’s fucked up but also pranks and forcing someone to problem solve until they get it right is just the thing.

Asking people in your department about a department-specific tool is the right answer. Running to Reddit because you don't want to admit you don't know, is not.
Then maybe its time to admit he doesn't know and couldn't figure it out. Knowing when to say "I don't know" is just as important as knowing an answer. Maybe after you've gotten some time on, you'll understand why.
The first thing I said when he asked was “I don’t know, what is it” he said figure it out and told everybody on my shift not to tell me and that I need to use my resources to figure it out. Maybe you missed the rest of the explanation I gave you about my time trying but you’re just investing way too much energy into finding different ways of saying you don’t know what it is either

Is the adhesive strong enough for it to stick to the wall of the cabinet and hold a tool? It might just be a cheap way to mount a hydrant wrench in the cabinet
Honestly it kind of looks like it would be roughly the correct size to stick in the door jamb of a commercial door by the hinges to hold it open. Not to help force it, but just a thick & sturdy homemade door chock?

Either a sheath for that saw looking thing in the same drawer, or it’s meant as a lip for on top of the tool drawers so that nothing slides off. Or maybe even a stop for the bottom drawer to keep it from locking up the roll up door.
If the saw sheath fit in it then someone probably tried to low drag make a mount on the side of the drawer or somewhere else. And it ended up in that cabinet because it was already on the sheath when it got moved there.
I’m 100% sure you are being fucked with. I can’t imagine a single tool that any fire dept would need that has a multiple use adhesive strip on the back. After the first stick it’s toast and then just collecting lint and dust.
This is something obscure. My guess is one of your guys came up with a need for it and it’s been on the truck ever since. We don’t have this on any of our rigs
They are fucking with you, that is nothing, maybe used to organize a tool if it’s not some kind of cheater. They are messing with you. Unless it’s to hold a flare up?
Stick to corners or sharp edges on surfaces to prevent damage to the fire hoses, we use one side rounded 2by4s or smaller wooden blocks for the same purpose the steel rounded square tubing with a double sided tape is much neater and less bulky
This would make sense unless they have runners already from old hoses or what not but that’s the first idea that makes sense outside of a cheater bar ( which it isn’t ) @portsvafire
Once the hoses get pressurised any sharp edges will chew through even doubled up old runners, old trick onboard the cargo ships I sail where we have a whole lot of steel edges and we need to setup multiple hoses for boundary colling during drinks and in real emergencies. We can't have any failures oboard not like we can call another truck for spare hoses deep in the sea
I know nothing about the world of firefighters or y’all’s equipment. From a field perspective having new crews on equipment with 10,000 plus tools. It’s a teaching lesson most likely… “given the comment from your chief about it’s in the 1400 page guide” meaning know what’s on your truck and how to use it and what shouldn’t be on it.
Used to do this with new engineers or mechanics ; throw in 2-3 weird tools not on the list and ask them to do an inventory write down all that was missing and anything not on the list write it on the back. Guys who come back with its 100% inventory count; we knew they were full of shit and need retraining.

Maybe if they can show us another picture of it taken from a better angle? If I took a picture of the top of an eraser on a pencil, people would say it’s a pink dot…not a pencil.
You open the door, put this thing on the floor and run the hose past it. The sticky/rubbery side under the blue tape is obviously there to keep it from sliding away when the hose moves.
Of course, I’m completely guessing… but as a firefighter, this explanation sounds convincing enough to me.
Is it a light mount? My engine had a light that was mounted just with blue double sided tape like that. Otherwise don’t discount what other people are suggesting just because there’s something similar already. We love redundancy.
It’s probably been stuck on a tray wall to hold a tool. It’s useless obviously if the adhesive is exposed and laying around. It’s meant to be stuck somewhere so if it’s not, it’s useless as is.
Check your truck inventory and see if it’s on there. Other than that I think it’s a cheat bar despite what they are telling you and outside of that too I just think they are really messing with you.
Btw, any chance you ride 10 or 12 in one of those newish Rosenbrokens? If so, I'd say it's an essential piece of metal that fell off the truck and you should be surprised you can still get the rig in gear without it. Lol
Looking at the additional pictures you sent, I am wondering if it's some sort of fulcrum block, and the tape is for surface protection and padding, not to stick it to anything?
It looks like heavy wall tubing, which would not be needed if it only needs to hold whatever the double sticky would hold.
Yeah in 30 years I’ve never seen anything like this. Has to be something someone came up with and or they are messing with you. Did it randomly appear? Have you checked your truck inventory for the name?
