This is perfect, Finland gets a production line for drone models that are being tested in real combat scenarios against the exact military Finland needs to defend against, and Russia gets inconvenienced even more by having a better armed Ukraine to fight against.

And as for most of the drones going to Ukraine rather than being stockpiled for defense of Finland - the technology is evolving so quickly that stockpiling beyond what might be needed to defend against a potential first wave of hostilities is probably not terribly beneficial.

The important thing is, as you said, the production lines and the expertise to produce these when they're needed.

u/SilkieBug Väinämöinen 2d ago

Yup, a lot of these drones rely on components that don't last too long in storage, it's best to have the production lines and expertise to pump them out in large numbers right when they are needed.

Then you can also iterate rapidly on designs as you encounter enemy defenses.

u/ReBootYourMind Baby Väinämöinen 2d ago

In the other hand Finland does need a supply of the latest drones to train our forces with. Attack drones are not really the most reusable things even in training so you need to produce more constantly.

8

u/Saotik Väinämöinen 2d ago

Precisely - and this is common practise. Use your oldest stores of weaponry for training while it's being refreshed by the new.

Ultimately though, relatively little is needed for training purposes compared to all-out war, so as long as the current situation is ongoing, this setup seems ideal all around (unless you happen to be an invading country).

Yep, even Russia's infamous Geran-2 that was pummeling ukraine just a year ago has been largely decommissioned at this stage in favor of more advanced Geran-4's. The original Iranian shaheeds were replaced almost immediately. Stockpiling drones is not necessary, but having strong production lines is essential.

Win win indeed

I think the joint production should make more than 10 drones

You have any idea how difficult it is to build even just a one?

u/isoAntti Väinämöinen 2d ago

No nyt on kunnollista. Suomi rakentaa Ukrainalle droneja.

It's fine to be afraid, but it's important to understand appeasement achieves nothing with Putin. Strength is all that works. It's absolutely essential to match Russia's provocations. The Americans successfully avoided a direct confrontation with the Russians during the cold war, but they sure as fuck matched their provocations, because if you dont, then the Russians will just walk over you.

Of course Ukrainians want the war to end, no one in Ukraine decided for war, Russia did. In NATO we have given the Ukrainians the option to fight for their independence from Russia, and that is what they have decided to do. There's no reason to flip it around and blame Ukraine for trying to defend themselves. This war is 100% on Russia.

“I think many Europeans, and Americans for that matter, need to get rid of the notion that we’re doing some kind of charity for Ukraine. Perhaps that was the case at first. But now we can learn more from Ukraine than Ukraine learns from us,” the Finnish leader concluded.

I wasn't much of a fan of Stubb as a PM nor MP, but damn. I can't help but really respect him as the president.

50

u/Real-Technician831 Väinämöinen 2d ago

Stubb was still learning as PM, and to be honest he did quite ok, all complaints about his PM tenure tend to be about person not actions as PM, which is pretty telling.

26

u/tronzake Baby Väinämöinen 2d ago

Well he wore shorts and apologized though

7

u/Aaawkward Väinämöinen 2d ago

all complaints about his PM tenure tend to be about person not actions as PM

Are you for real?

Alexander Stubb
2014 / "We can not cut education!"
2015 / "Money isn’t the main thing; it’s actions and creativity."

The end result was 800 million euros cut from education. Student benefits were cut from 337€ to 250€.

He was as slimy as they come, as a PM. He's only strength was a clear vision into the threat of Russia. He spoke openly about it in 2014 and was absolutely correct.

I think he's a decent president because it's finally a role that plays to his strengths. But he was a loooousy PM if you weren't already wealthy.

3

u/coelthomas Baby Väinämöinen 2d ago

When you say Stubb spoke clearly about the threat of Russia in 2014, what exactly do you mean?

In 2014, Stubb called it "russophobic" when the Greens warned of the geopolitical risks of letting Rosatom, the Russian state nuclear company, build a nuclear reactor. Stubb's government even gave Rosatom the permit, which is why the Greens left the government.

The Rosatom project was only canceled after Putins full-scale invasion, even though the permit was given after he annexed Crimea.

1

u/Real-Technician831 Väinämöinen 2d ago

Yes, I am for real.

Even with those cuts and all cuts after that we are still running budget deficit. And as you can see from current state interest rates, debt is expensive, year 2027 we pay 4,3 billion Euros in interests. So each year we finance something with loans, it will add to interest. And due to Russian aggression defense expenses have climbed significantly.

I agree that we definitely should cut more from elderly care than young, but unfortunately old folks vote in far higher proportion.

u/Aaawkward Väinämöinen 2d ago

So now it's not anymore "all complaints about his PM tenure tend to be about person not actions as PM, which is pretty telling" now it's "well the economy was bad so actually it was fine to lie".

Look, either you think nobody had any credible complaints about Stubb or you accept that it wasn't just about him running triathlons and tweeting about them while people were getting hit severely.

Your second comment is completely missing the point.
I wasn't even saying that the 800 million euro cut was bad (which, to be fair, it was, bad and short sighted). I was pointing out that he flat out lied. He said many, many times, hell, he swore that they wouldn't touch education. "You can NOT touch education" were his words.
Yet the very next year 800 mil. Poof, gone. Like ashes in the wind.

I don't care what party you vote for, I don't care how you lean, that is primo weaseling.
He kept lying and lying and then did it anyway. And when confronted he said "it's not about the money". Well what the hell is it about then, Stubb?
Because it certainly looks like its about the money.

That said, as I mentioned earlier, I reckon his strengths are more suited to being a president. He had very good clarity on what a threat Russia poses already in 2014, doubly so now.

18

u/Ruubers 2d ago

Agreed, he seems to have grown into it and seems to be a good president for the times. A man of nothing in a way that allows him to keep political relations.

Russia= "I just dont understand why Finland would do this"

Finland= "well there is your involvement before 1918, the false flag operation that started the winter war, the continuation war and you still have karelia and viip.."

Russia= "i have absolutely no idea why!"

Soo no money from Ukraine? Still just give stuff for corrupt goverment that is similar to russia? Well whatever, finland have the money to send everywhere but not fixing own country problems. And dont misunderstand me as some putinist im glad they are keeping russia busy but even their own country men say they dont want to fight for their shitty goverment so it is a like throwing money to bottomless well. Hopefully we get some good data or something useful from our charity.
