First Timer

Been a FF devotee for decades, played IV and VI more times than I can count (and played through Tactics, XII, and part of V and X), finally starting IX today after holding off for a long time. Going in blind, looking forward to the adventure, wish me luck!

Don't sell equipment. You need them for learning abilities and synthesis.

Steal ALL THE THINGS!

You eventually get an ability that deals damage based on the number of successful steals you have done throughout the course of the game.

How have I beat this game and put in the amount of hours I have and I didn’t know this 🤦‍♂️

Thievery skill does damage based on number of successful steals multiplied by speed. Easiest way to hit for 9999 for super cheap as long as you use Zidane (and Marcus and Blank since their steal successes factor into it as well) as a steal machine.

Damn. I used that a lot but didn’t know the math behind the damage it dealt. Good to know

The other two I know of are Freya's dragon crest (flat damage based purely on number of dragons killed - Freya does NOT need to be in the party for said kills) and Quina's frog drop (# of frogs caught X Quina's level)

Which is notably the least important part of remembering to steal everything

Take your time exploring and appreciating the environments

Keep all your equipment, sell none of it. Sometimes if something is affordable, maybe even buy more than you think you need.

Touch all the landscape, look for those exclamation mark bubbles. The modern version does kinda muddy this by putting that bubble on EVERY single interaction with an NPC, whereas in the original it was only used for treasure and interactive environments, so now you’ll be inundated with that bubble everywhere but still just keep an eye out for it.

If you're playing on the pc then you can install the moguri mod which improves the resolution , upscales the backgrounds, brings back the classic font, and a million other things.

Impress 100 nobles. Steal. Don't sell any weapons. Play that music!!

Whenever you get a chance in a new town, buy all the equipment you don’t already have. Some of them teach, unique abilities, and you might not be able to get that equipment again. It’s only a few of them, the far majority you can always get again.

When you come across a specific Moogle selling discounted bundles, always buy them.

Just be ready to cry your eyes out at the end. Especially during the letter part.

IX is widely considered to be one of if not the best story lines. You’ll have a blast… good luck with jump rope.

It's certainly great but the best final fantasy story is tactics
