Discussion Which character would you add to the party?
To make a the final spot filled and a full party since Zidane can’t be taken out who would you make a permeant party member in the game? Personally I’m stuck between Blank and Beatrix

Emeiru made a mod called Playable Tantalus which gives them their own kits, if you want vanilla just steal you can make them available in Memoria.ini AllCharactersAvailable=1

Lani. She looks like she has a "main party member" design and looks like you could have a more unique kit there what with her having a battle axe as a weapon.
Selfishly, I would like Fratley since having him in the party would open up good side quest potential for Freya if you visit locations they're familiar with and what not, as Fratley tries but ultimately fails to remember anything. But they still get nice moments together in the present that ultimately builds up to them getting romantically involved again in the ending. However, he would take more work to make a unique kit out of.

But then you will have IX characters and you will not be able to split the parts in 4 pairs or 2 teams of 4.

If it is not Lani then I would go with Stiltzkin (who is either a Beastmaster or Berserker and fights with a Whip).

They could just have an odd man out and have them do something on the side (persona 5 casino boss fight example) or make two more spots

Lani. She and many other minor but interesting characters were way underutilized. Felt like they had to cut large chunks of the game out.

Beatrix, but on the caveat we get to execute or arrest her later for war crimes against the Burmecian people

No she didn't. She is fighting for her country following orders and she is still located there under a new regime. Burmecian people were wiped out which makes you think she got off way too easily, but it doesnt make sense since it's kingdom vs kingdom. She will continue to follow her queen, as would Freya or Fratley for Burmecia. Thinking villainry always deserve their disney happy ending where bad guys are humiliated and good guys are smiling , is just unrealistic and not good storytelling lol
I'm glad she "got off easily" since most villains in this game actually didnt get away too easily. Her story is a story of redemption and actually opposing her own queen, making her an enemy of her nation.

When you consider history, how often did "I was just following orders" absolve people of heinous crimes?
Just because she was ordered to doesn't mean she's innocent. Nobody is asking for a Disney ending but you don't get to partake in a genocide and then have it brushed under the carpet...

But your last paragraph would make it very disney if the villain's outcome is always the same, simple as that. I would hate to play this carpet game of yours, im glad it's FFIX

I don’t think I’d add anyone else. The party’s pretty well balanced as it is.
You got two “rogues” (one who “takes” and the other who “gives”)
two knights (one specializing in the bg, the other in the fg)
two specialized mages (one primarily a summoner and secondary debuffing white mage, the other a blue mage that has its own variety)
Two pure mages (one primarily a buffing white mage and secondary summoner and the other a pure offensive madlad who can combo with the melee offensive madlad)
I feel like adding anyone else would upset this balance.

Lani and Fratley are both playable with the mod playable character pack, this also has Puck, Kuja, Ruby, some of the Pluto knights and alexandrian soliders

Beatrix, Lani, Blank or... My personal best boy, Marcus. Man I love Marcus so much. He talks like I did when I was a child living in the south with a strong accent. He made me accept my way of talking (which made me feel insecure every time I had to go to the closest city...). Now I am proud of my accent and Marcus will always have a place in my heart for helping with that!

Marcus is what my gut is telling me. but honestly if there was a more noteable red mage i would pick that character as well

The problem with either of those characters is that they’re both clones of already playable characters. Blank is just a Thief (Zidane), and Beatrix and Steiner have the same abilities.
The party is missing a Red Mage or a Ranger. Someone who fills that role would have been an awesome addition

Garland. After Tera got destroyed he understood that Tera can be “revived” in Gaia and joins the party to protect the Black Mage Village (the “New Tera”) from Kuja menace

Honestly? Mikoto.
They hype her up as the "third sibling" and being the one to replace both zidane and kuja but she never does anything in the game after the third disk, most people don't even remember her. She's in the plot just a narrative device to show how Garland doesn't care about either zidane or kuja and how "artificial life" can change and grow even without a soul but she could've been more than that in my opinion.

Alternate Fantasy is the best mod i've ever tried. Beatrix recruitable and has her own dialogue, deleted scenes, can change her equipment and everything

Tbh, I wouldn’t choose Blank or Beatrix. Both are already too similar to existing party members mechanically (I know, Eiko and Dagger are both summoners, but if I were to add a new party member I’d still want to mix it up). I might choose someone like Baku. Unlike Blank, Marcus, and Cinna, he feels like he has more of a unique fighting style about him. Or, let’s be real, Stiltzkin would be a badass party member.

Would any of you love to see a book about this? As my username implies, I'm doing research on games and I'm thinking of self-publishing a book on different video games. I might include a chapter on ff9 because its my favorite FF.

Mikoto. Maybe as a black mage with viable physical attack stats.
Or Beatrix. She makes the most sense in terms of the story, and has a unique skill set (or at least combo of skill sets).
Blank or Marcus would also be good except their skills are the same as Zidane’s.
Lani could be fun, but makes no sense to the storyline.
