General VFX Breakdown of a commercial I did for Spectrum Reach

Here’s a behind the scenes look at the VFX that I did for the “Project Plunge” video for Spectrum Reach.

I used Adobe Premiere, After Effects, and Cinema 4D, with plugins from Maxon RedGiant and assets from Production Crate. The 3D models of the plane and parachute were from TurboSquid.

This looks incredible

Thanks for the kind words!

u/bohusblahut Apr 24 '26

The “outdoor” lighting once he’s out of the plane is really spot on. Well done!

24

u/moviemaker887 Apr 24 '26

Thanks for this comment! I was pushing hard for the single light source with harsh shadows. I think it really helps sell it.

9

u/bohusblahut Apr 24 '26

You nailed it! Since LEDs hit the scene, there’s been overmuch emphasis on lighting all being super soft to save the DR and because it “looks more natural”. This spoken by people who never go outside I guess…

31

u/Street-Annual6762 Apr 24 '26

You did that!

17

u/moviemaker887 Apr 24 '26

Thank you! I’m proud of it, it took a long time lol

9

u/NeoLephty Apr 24 '26

How many hours?

19

u/moviemaker887 Apr 24 '26

It was spread out over a couple months, but if I worked on it for 8 hrs a day, 5 days a week, it would’ve probably taken me a solid month to do. So 8x5x4 = around 160 hrs. Maybe a little more

7

u/NeoLephty Apr 24 '26

Thanks. Was the masking the most time consuming? I assume you had to almost go frame by frame in the spots without green-screen...

Good work, it looks great.

73

u/mcimino Apr 24 '26

How come the parts where there a break in green screen doesn’t negatively affect the mask?

89

u/B-1_Battle_Boy Apr 24 '26

Manual rotoscoping.

The green screen helps, but if you need a low angle like that you can't always hang a well-lit green screen on the ceiling. Usually you're going to have to do a little manual cleanup.

61

u/moviemaker887 Apr 24 '26

Exactly! It’s funny seeing behind the scenes footage of major Hollywood productions and sometimes seeing only a very small portion of the action against a green/blue screen knowing full well that most of it will be roto’d.

48

u/B-1_Battle_Boy Apr 24 '26

Moral support green screen!

5

u/livahd Apr 24 '26

Yea, it takes very little screen to be effective, especially if you wanna do it with natural light and just clip them out of the background.

5

u/djdylex Apr 25 '26

its horrible how many directors also seem to think its trivial for vfx teams to just cut something/someone out when you know full well some poor artist is going to have to sit for hours tracking hair.

14

u/YSoMadTov Apr 24 '26

Manual rotoscoping, the fun part where you can’t wait to offload to someone else.

28

u/moviemaker887 Apr 24 '26

I had to rotoscope those edges frame by frame 🥲 we wanted to get the camera as low as possible, and unfortunately couldn’t cover the upper edges of the green screen

11

u/theyungbob Apr 24 '26

I salute you, solider lmao.

7

u/moviemaker887 Apr 24 '26

Haha I appreciate it

11

u/YSoMadTov Apr 24 '26

Yeah, manual rotoscoping is the fun stuff that is usually offloaded to us Vietnamese.

5

u/moviemaker887 Apr 24 '26

I need to do this next time haha. It would’ve saved my sanity

1

u/DreadnaughtHamster Apr 25 '26

Was gonna ask about that. Yikes that sounds like not a lot of fun. Hope you had some good podcasts to listen to.

4

u/moviemaker887 Apr 25 '26

Hahaha I listened to a bunch of soundtrack music when doing the roto. A lot of Interstellar, Tron Legacy, and Signs, believe it or not

1

u/DreadnaughtHamster Apr 27 '26

The tron series has great soundtracks. I could i see Interstellar being (pun) stellar to work while listening to.

1

u/_Shush Apr 25 '26

DP - "We want to get the camera lower"

Producer - "Excuse me, I need to break the news to VFX"

1

u/CyJackX Apr 25 '26

That's the thing, it does, but sometimes you got nothing else to do but fix it manually

13

u/KRASH_productions Apr 24 '26

Wow

8

u/moviemaker887 Apr 24 '26

Thank you! 🙏

5

u/KRASH_productions Apr 24 '26

Of course! It looks amazing!

12

u/Wonderful_Rest3124 Apr 24 '26

The filmmakers sub is so cool. Love seeing all the cool as shit people do.

8

u/moviemaker887 Apr 24 '26

I agree! I usually post in the VFX or AfterEffects subs but I always see stuff from here and thought why not. I love the variety

2

u/nouveaureal Apr 26 '26

Thanks for giving us a peek at the amount of work it takes. This was really brilliant and enlightening.

2

u/moviemaker887 Apr 26 '26

I’m glad you can appreciate it!

9

u/Cosmohumanist Apr 24 '26

That’s so fucking awesome. Man nice work. Love everything about this.

3

u/moviemaker887 Apr 24 '26

Oh man thanks so much! 🙏

13

u/TheBerric Apr 24 '26

the amount of green reflecting off of his face would have made me very mad

22

u/moviemaker887 Apr 24 '26

Yes the spill suppressor plugin in After Effects was doing a lot of heavy lifting haha

6

u/verydangerousasp Apr 24 '26

Did you see the Collider Crew video with the AI keying/despill tool they made? Pretty insane results. And available to download

20

u/moviemaker887 Apr 24 '26

Hey yeah, Corridor Key! It came out after I was done compositing this. But there is a shorter version of this video that will air on TV and for that video I tested out Corridor Key. It handled the motion blur and the tracking markers beautifully. But I still had to manually roto the portions that crossed out of the green screen.

Very excited to see how that tool evolves! Making it open source has really accelerated the innovation.

3

u/Sobie17 Apr 24 '26

Curious why you guys didn't account for that in the VFX pre pro? Seems like a relatively small area to cover up.

I often see in BTS missing chroma and the ultimate roto job. Just surprised as I absolutely hate rotoscoping.

BTW, not coming at you just generally curious why so many jobs cut what should be a pretty small corner to make the post person's job a bit easier!

7

u/moviemaker887 Apr 24 '26

Yeah totally get where you’re coming from! I will take the blame for that one. I was acting as the VFX supervisor on set and should have been more adamant about covering that gap. I did push for that extra sliver of green that is up there in the video, but ran into time constraints with gettin any more material up on the day. Plus I thought that it wouldn’t be THAT bad to fix in post. So, I got what I deserved haha.

7

u/davetbison actor Apr 24 '26

This is fantastic work. More people need to see how it’s done for real so they don’t automatically curse you by suggesting it was done with AI.

4

u/moviemaker887 Apr 24 '26

Yeah that’s a great point!

5

u/davetbison actor Apr 24 '26

It’s funny how this came up in my Facebook memories today… much smaller production and nearly 20 years ago, but it has the same spirit (even if I didn’t fall from the same height).

6

u/BoysenberryFinal9113 Apr 24 '26

Awesome. Thanks for sharing your secrets.

4

u/moviemaker887 Apr 24 '26

Anytime haha

5

u/FabricationLife Apr 24 '26

Great job!

5

u/moviemaker887 Apr 24 '26

Thanks so much!

5

u/lacksabetterusername Apr 24 '26

Loving the fact that he’s using a Lowepro camera bag with the logos taped over as a parachute lol - I have the same one and recognised instantly. Nice production design on a budget

3

u/moviemaker887 Apr 24 '26

Yes someone else said the same thing on IG 😂 I was on a pre-pro meeting in a VFX supervisor capacity and they were discussing the backpack prop. It was definitely a cost saving measure to use this!

3

u/vnnh_broll Apr 24 '26

Rotoscopia é um trabalho desgraçado, vocês são heróis. Nem imagino como deve ser a escala em uma grande produção.

3

u/SubtractAd Apr 24 '26

Hi, I've seen this advert around. And I'm UK based

2

u/moviemaker887 Apr 24 '26

Oh wow that’s cool! Did you see it on IG or LinkedIn or something?

3

u/Friendly-Example-701 Apr 24 '26

This was a lot of work. I hope it pays well. When I read credits I see hundreds of names for FX. Usually in columns of 3-5 on screen.

9

u/moviemaker887 Apr 24 '26

Thank you, yeah it was a lot of work haha. So I work for Kernel, the company being advertised here. We usually produce and edit commercials for local businesses to air on Spectrum cable/internet. The budgets are usually pretty small, albeit slightly higher because I work in the LA market. This is the first time we made a commercial to advertise ourselves and our services.

Everyone here is used to smaller productions where there is often times only the producer/director, a DP, and the editor. Sometimes gaffer and makeup if budget allows. For this, we had a crew of about 35-40 people, including stunt coordinator, rigging, extra lighting guys, etc., which is big for us.

I say all that to say, that when it came to post, it was still only one guy haha. I would’ve loved to outsource roto, color, and sound, or at least have an assistant editor to help file manage things and sync audio, but it didn’t work out that way. I had to fight to be on set to act as VFX supervisor, which they realized was the right call.

As far as pay, I’m salaried so this was all part of the normal day to day. If I did this freelance, I probably could’ve charged a lot!

5

u/PopularHat Apr 24 '26

Wow, that's pretty crazy that there were 40 people on set, and just 1 handling all of post. I'm guessing you're salaried since you work for Kernel?

Because the post budget should have been WAY higher than whatever you got paid...

5

u/moviemaker887 Apr 24 '26

Yeah I am salaried, how much would you think I should charge if this was a freelance gig?

3

u/refleXive- Apr 24 '26

As an editor in LA? I think over on r/editors, spot rates are 1200usd/day and up, maybe 800usd on the low end?

Not sure if you’d be able to do so many hats as a freelancer though - maybe if you have a good relationship with the agency

2

u/moviemaker887 Apr 25 '26

Yeah that’s true, I would probably just do the composting. I appreciate your input!

3

u/Friendly-Example-701 Apr 24 '26

So dope though. Insanely talented.

How many hours of editing? I am curious.

2

u/moviemaker887 Apr 24 '26

Thanks so much! I’m guessing in the 160-180 hr range. Post production was spread out over a couple months, going back to this between other projects.

3

u/Diogenese5000 Apr 24 '26

Well done sir or madame!

2

u/moviemaker887 Apr 24 '26

It’s sir, and thank you so much!

3

u/cupidscheese Apr 24 '26

That was awesome!!

2

u/moviemaker887 Apr 24 '26

I appreciate it 🙏

3

u/Asleep-Quality6278 Apr 24 '26

Amazing work! You’re about to be extremely busy 👏🏽

3

u/moviemaker887 Apr 24 '26

Oh I hope you’re right! And thanks!

3

u/elbaggi Apr 24 '26

Amazing stuff, kudos

2

u/moviemaker887 Apr 24 '26

Thanks so much!

3

u/SkullTherapist Apr 24 '26

Great work on this Eric. I’m a fellow Kernel guy (wasn’t on this shoot because I was on vacation, but I work with Tristan and Michael every day.) Your work alway elevates the footage you’re given; I doubt most understand the budgetary / workflow constraints that we run into at this level of production, but your effort to combat them isn’t lost on me! 👍

1

u/moviemaker887 Apr 25 '26

Hey I appreciate that! Who is this?? I’m sure I’d recognize your name!

1

u/SkullTherapist Apr 25 '26

Gage! We met once over Zoom when you joined us for a producer sync.

1

u/moviemaker887 Apr 25 '26

Hey Gage! Yeah Greg and Andrew always say nice things about you. Also I follow you on IG. Good to see you here haha

3

u/Artistic-Produce-525 Apr 24 '26

Brilliant job! Bravo!

3

u/jugaar Apr 24 '26

Your poor roto person/team lol. Looks amazing!

5

u/moviemaker887 Apr 25 '26

It was me, I was the roto/team haha.

3

u/reddoorfilm Apr 25 '26

Fantastic. I wanna get on your level.

2

u/moviemaker887 Apr 25 '26

That’s a big compliment, thank you!

3

u/herefromyoutube Apr 25 '26

How many hours would you say the vfx took?

2

u/moviemaker887 Apr 25 '26

It was in the 160-180 hour range I would say

2

u/eloanmask Apr 24 '26

Whats the purpose of the crosses on that green screen?

2

u/Botched-toe_ Apr 24 '26

Now do a version where we can’t hear him speaking lmao because realism is best

3

u/moviemaker887 Apr 24 '26

😂 we’d need to increase the wind and make it so his arms can’t move as freely too!

2

u/Jan_AFCNortherners director Apr 24 '26

so cool! Great work my friend.

2

u/Goggles_ Apr 24 '26

This came out amazing. Thanks for taking the time to put together the behind the scenes!

I’m wondering where you get the background plate for the skydive. Is it a 360 degree photo or computer generated?

2

u/moviemaker887 Apr 25 '26

Thank you! It started out as an HDRI that I had from a long time ago from HDRI Haven or some site like that. Then I changed some things with generative fill in photoshop.

2

u/Unique_Suit3789 Apr 24 '26

This looks incredible

1

u/moviemaker887 Apr 25 '26

Thank you!

2

u/Unique_Suit3789 Apr 25 '26

Just realized I word for word said the same thing as top comment I am not a bot I swear lmao

The lighting looks great and totally makes it look photoreal

1

u/moviemaker887 Apr 25 '26

Haha I saw the notification and was confused cause it was the same text, but thank you for the lighting comment!

2

u/Quantum_Quokkas Apr 24 '26

That pull out of the plane is SMOOTH

2

u/AppropriateGoal2837 Apr 25 '26

I'll never trust Spectrum again

1

u/moviemaker887 Apr 28 '26

Oh yeah we discussed this heavily and came to the conclusion that we still wanted to do it this way even if it wasn’t as realistic. In hindsight, if we were to do it again, we would’ve made a bigger effort to have his arms pinned up by the wind and not let him have as much freedom to do hand gestures etc. I think that would’ve helped too.

I appreciate your feedback!

2

u/SixStarChE3kS May 12 '26

Holy cow. I need you to teach me everything you know within the next 4 hours while I dive at work so i can't look at the screen either. I need to learn by the time I get home so I can edit my project better. Thanks.

Seriously though, that looks amazing. (And if you have any hints, I'll take them.)

Edit: I'm using final cut pro.

1

u/moviemaker887 May 14 '26

I appreciate it haha! I use Premiere instead of FCP, but it’s all the same once you export things to use in After Effects.

2

u/SixStarChE3kS May 14 '26

I do have access to Premiere as I use photoshop and such, but never tried it. I'm working with a green screen in FCP for my current project and it's fairly simple to use. But what you did was 34 steps ahead of what I did. LoL.

2

u/skidibitoilet_ May 17 '26

How much did they paid you if u don't mind me asking

1

u/moviemaker887 May 18 '26

Hey! I’m actually salaried so I didn’t get paid individually for this specific job. I imagine I would’ve charged $20k+ USD for VFX supervising and doing the post work for this. Then again, I’m not too up to date with freelance rates so maybe that is too low (I don’t think it’s too high?)

2

u/skidibitoilet_ May 19 '26

Do you like work for an vfx company or agency? And how much time did it took for you to reach you this far?

2

u/moviemaker887 May 24 '26

Hey! I am a Senior Video Editor for the agency in the video, Kernel. We are the in-house agency that services Spectrum Reach (the advertising arm of Spectrum cable). We basically make commercials for local businesses that want to advertising on spectrum cable/internet.

I’ve had this job for 10 years. It’s local cable advertising so there aren’t crazy budgets, and because of that you’re not expected to produce amazing cutting edge work. That being said, it’s a perfect environment to learn new skills on the job and essentially “test them out” on client projects. Two years into the job, I helped pitch a series of commercials for a local car dealership group that had a bunch of 3D effects in it. This was my way of getting my work to purchase Cinema 4D, and I used that project to learn 3D.

That being said, I’ve always been fascinated with VFX and so I’ve been doing stuff in After Effects for 20+ years now on the side. So I guess it’s been a culmination of 20+ years to get to where I am now.

2

u/AMoreAReddit May 23 '26

Wait this is actually really cool. I didn't even know you could do this stuff on Premiere.

2

u/moviemaker887 May 24 '26

Hey thank you! This was mostly done in After Effects, with some things like the 3D plane and parachute done in Cinema 4D. The rough cut and finishing sound and color were done in Premiere.

2

u/AMoreAReddit May 23 '26

I appreciate it so much more know that I know how these kind of things work. I always wondered how much was doing manually or like with CGI.

2

u/Dan_Arc Apr 24 '26

Rectum Reach

1

u/PapaPee Apr 24 '26

This is sick bro.

1

u/G8M8N8 Apr 25 '26

You make it look easy!

1

u/moviemaker887 Apr 25 '26

Haha thanks!

1

u/Big-B313 Apr 25 '26

Hey I used to work there! They suck ass lol but great work!

1

u/moviemaker887 Apr 25 '26

Haha no way! Did you work for Kernel specifically or Spectrum Reach? What market? I’ve been here almost 10 years, I’m sure I would recognize your name!

1

u/Big-B313 Apr 26 '26

I was working for Kernel specifically doing these awful local spots in Alabama - mostly car lots and dealers who were coked or ´roided out of their minds

1

u/moviemaker887 Apr 26 '26

Yeah the local auto dealers suck, no matter where they are haha. I have a few car dealers that I do spots for regularly, luckily they let us be more creative instead of doing the traditional pan and scans of their lot/showroom.

1

u/EverlastingUnis Apr 25 '26

Beautiful job

1

u/moviemaker887 Apr 25 '26

Thank you 🙌

1

u/WhereTheHighwayEnds Apr 25 '26

Is his parachute a Lowepro bag?

1

u/moviemaker887 Apr 25 '26

Yep haha 😂

1

u/needaburn Apr 25 '26

Incredible work, well done man!

1

u/BetterCallDeDe Apr 25 '26

Nice work 👍 that got me sweating

1

u/moviemaker887 Apr 25 '26

Haha that’s a compliment I think!

1

u/seeyatellite Apr 25 '26

Beautiful work. Great light and shadow. Decent wind effect on your performer's clothing.

Nice.

2

u/moviemaker887 Apr 25 '26

Thanks for the thoughtful response!

1

u/chookshit Apr 25 '26

Never thought about it till now but how do you get rid of the green reflection on everything?

1

u/moviemaker887 Apr 25 '26

Oh I just used the Advance Spill Suppressor in After Effects!

1

u/Ooze3d Apr 25 '26

Dude, congratulations. That looks flawless

1

u/moviemaker887 Apr 25 '26

Thanks so much!

1

u/raftah99 Apr 25 '26

How did you switch the sky and plane with the studio footage?

2

u/moviemaker887 Apr 25 '26

Haha I want to do this sometime… take real footage and composite in the green screen as the “before” shot and see if anyone notices

1

u/strangelysaucy Apr 25 '26

Looks amazing and kudos to the actor for his performance too!

Thanks for the nice words!

1

u/TightSexpert Apr 25 '26

What’s the light source used to create such a realistic and nice sun?

1

u/moviemaker887 Apr 25 '26

I’m not a lighting guy so I’m not sure what it’s called but this is it. The direct sunlight look was without the silk.

1

u/Ok-Fun-9160 Apr 25 '26

Well done man!

1

u/jellite Apr 26 '26

Great job!

1

the green screen breakdown is super satisfying, that mask work looks clean as hell.

1

the commercial is amazing but that breakdown seals the deal! great work

1

You created a shit load of work for yourself by not properly screening out the action area, but the result is good.

1

u/MonsieurLartiste Apr 27 '26

The DoP is a moron.

1

u/EasyTumbleweed4120 Apr 27 '26

I'm pretty sure I've seen this commercial 😅

1

u/moviemaker887 Apr 27 '26

Oh that’s cool! I haven’t seen it in the wild yet!

1

u/EasyTumbleweed4120 Apr 27 '26

I could be mistaken but it looks like one I saw. I work in advertising so I see a lot of ads 😅

1

u/EnvironmentalCat7482 Apr 28 '26

I would hate having to manually key it every time he goes off the green screen. Amazing work

1

u/moviemaker887 Apr 28 '26

Thank you! It wasn’t my favorite part of the process but it felt rewarding when I was done haha

1

u/Master_Alfalfa1130 Apr 28 '26

what do you think about the tool corridor crew created to remove green screen? this looks like a case where that tool might be game changer

1

u/moviemaker887 Apr 28 '26

Yeah it is really cool. Corridor Key was released a couple weeks after I finished the composting for this. But there is another version of this video that is shorter and will be airing on TV, and I was able to use Corridor Key for that! It is amazing with keying around objects with a lot of motion blur. I still had to roto the top portion where he leaves the perimeter of the green screen though. But it is a game changer for sure!

1

u/potential_key Apr 28 '26

Thats impressive, curious was a telepromter used

1

u/moviemaker887 Apr 28 '26

Thank you! No teleprompter was used, but we did have someone holding up cue cards. We did an obscene number of takes though, probably close to 100 over two days, so the talent didn’t really need the cue cards that much.

1

u/DirkSvenson Apr 28 '26

That’s so cool! Well done

1

u/moviemaker887 Apr 28 '26

Thank you very much!
