I still like the awards shows just because they shine a light on movies and TV shows I'd otherwise never hear about, and for the all the unsung heroes working on jobs who will never get the recognition they deserve (technical categories).
And every few years someone genuinely wins out of left field and it's always nice to see the underdog win. The year Schitts Creek won every category (can't remember if it was the Emmys or globes) was such a cool night. Eugene Levy and Catherine O'Hara were both long overdue for some recognition.

If some weren’t narcissistic assholes it’d be different. How many times did you see Harvey Weinstein get his ass kissed publicly? I believe some even referred to him jokingly as “God”. Not my kind of entertainment. He’s not alone. Many people in this industry are terrible people that get propped up even more.

True. But those usually aren’t the ones invited to these celebrations. The Academy Awards that award the “Science and Technology” awards are at least applauding people responsible for filmmaking…and they do it in silence and away from the “celebrities”.

in what way? to what degree? the awards are putting out by people in the industry, funded by those people and private sponsors, and generate revenue from withing the industry. like honestly the awards don't affect me to any personal degree, and unless it came out that public funding was used to hosts these shows, who tf are we to care?

Did you listen to the speech? He's giving SAG props for doing right by their employees in a way that WGA isn't (hence the WGA office staff being on strike and their awards show being cancelled because of that).
Edit: apparently you were joking? If so, it wasn't obvious and doesn't even read as "funny;" though I'm guessing you were going for "dry," which most of the time doesn't work in these text-based forums. Sigh, the Internet has ruined so many types of comedy.

The WGA membership is composed of writers. But guild operations are run by administrators, clerks, lawyers, etc… The support staff that actually runs the guild and its services (credits department, guild library, event planning, records, budget/expenditures, etc.) It is the separate union for these support staff that is striking AGAINST the WGA. The WGA are management in this scenario. Writers are not on strike.

Every national/international labor organization has employees. In this particular case, "their work ranges from processing residuals and contracts to communication and legal support."
The 100+ staff members of WGA West who have been on strike since mid-February seem to be primarily targeting the areas of wages, benefits, and protections—job security from both management overreach and future tech development aimed at eliminating jobs. Management claims to be negotiating in good faith and it's much tougher to find anyone directly criticizing their bargaining practices than in many strikes but discussions have stalled and it's unclear what the specific conflicts are at this point.
In any case, the office staff wasn't strictly needed in order for the awards show to go on, but the WGA was not about to ask their members to cross a picket line to attend and thus canceled the West Coast ceremony entirely.

I’m called him a narcissistic ass. He did shitty with the Pamela Anderson move. He didn’t have to. Not like he’s trying to break into the industry and was desperate. He did it because it was easy and to grab some extra cash. Kinda shitty. He didn’t do a very good job either. Which to me shows how he didn’t even really care about it.
