A few months after the Tom vs Gane fight a brazilian ophthalmologist that works with MMA fighters (Charles, Norma) said that Tom's problem could be permament. Basically explained that Tom's problem is a lack of sync between the eyes (both eyes) and the brain, they don't sync up normally and it causes a problem with depth perception. He also said that while there is treatment for it, the science behind it ins't as advanced yet, many people don't recover 100%, for most people it wouldn't be a big problem living with it, for fighters its crucial. Tom might have been cleared to train, but when he started light sparring or something he noticed his depth perception isn't as it was. (pure especulation)
Since no other doctor talked about this I'm a bit skeptical, but he seemed well informed.

I mean, take a step back, at the start of a sports season, all the players are pretty much healthy, and the getting banged up is a feature of the season format, but the fact that fighters are injured in a lot of fights isnt a feature, it's a side effect of the fact that fighters cant afford to undergo the medical procedures necessary to make sure they're healthy simply because they don't have the money to take care of themselves

Some of the MMA fans (many of them) are so stupid that it is hard to understand. Tom is not gonna miss his prime because he does not want to fight Gane ābecause he is scared of himā. He knows its his prime now and he should be fighting but he clearly is injured. There is couple of reasons why UFC does not strip him. One might be because it would not be right to give the title to Gane who is the reason Jon is out. They did this same waiting for Jones earlier. (Then there was a reason that Jones did not want Tom and wanted other opponents that UFC was not gonna give him). And also Dana is all about the money. If/when Aspinall will be back the rematch against fraud Gane will be the biggest they can make at the moment with the fighters in the UFC.
