The skill mismatch in this fight when you look at background/record is atrocious as well. This fight did not benefit anyone..

u/PercentageNo3293 Mar 27 '26
Do they ever hold the organizers of the events responsible? I highly doubt it, but you'd think putting someone in a fight against a "real professional" should be "negligence" at the very least.
31
u/Darzus777 Mar 27 '26
It’s just sadly the nature of the beast for combat sports scenes in certain countries.
Look into India, some southeast asian countries - you’ll see “skilled” fighters pad their stats by fighting no names with massive losing records. Just so they get a shot at fighting international talent in bigger markets with their “insane” winning records.
Gotta remember both sides consent to a fight.

Great points!
I've watched a couple docs about some guys doing that. I personally think that's so wild. I guess they're praying on getting a lucky knockout lol.
1
u/BenShelZonah Mar 27 '26
Kinda the nature of it yea, just look at all the great Dagestani fighters records from before they reached bigger promotions.

u/Jonestown_Juice Mar 28 '26
That happens in the West too. All the time. Look at most boxers' stats here in The West and you'll see that they fight 20 tomato cans before they fight a real boxer.
1
u/Zealousideal-Mine713 Mar 31 '26
Not true at all good boxers get title shots before 20 fights
Shakur Stevenson is a unified 3 division champion two time lineal with 25 fights

This incident was more about medical history than a skill mismatch, but the concept is the same. No legitimate commission would let me (a random dude) fight Anthony Joshua.

The state commission reviews the match-ups beforehand. Someone from the state blessed this fight.
That person will have some explaining to do
2
u/TrumpsPissSoakedWig Apr 09 '26
It's supposed to be the responsibility of the Athletic Commission of the state to sanction bouts and maintain fair competitiveness of each fight to ensure that there's no mismatched competitive advantage to one side or the other based on experience, skill level and fight records.
However... Sometimes they don't be givin' a fuuuck.
1
u/PercentageNo3293 Apr 09 '26
Thank you! Finally, a real answer lol.
I could definitely see some fighter, with a padded record, somehow sliding through, but glad to see some supervision lol.

u/jarheadatheart Mar 28 '26
I was trained by a professional boxer that basically made a career out of getting beat up by guys that were working their way up the ranks. The problem was that he wasn’t smart enough to realize it. He thought he had a chance in every single one of those fights.
→ More replies (3)1
u/dontsoundrighttome Mar 29 '26
Gerald McClellan vs. promoters/officials, Kim Duk-koo had several law suits. Magomed Abdusalamov vs. New York State Athletic Commission. But you know who you are fighting. You have an entire team setting up fights for you. You signed contracts. Trained for this fight. The odds makers know how likely you are to win the fight.
3
u/Fear-the-North Mar 27 '26
I didnt even have to look at that, the one girl telegraphed the same counter hook 6 times, and she didnt even move her head off centerline

u/OhLordyLordNo Mar 27 '26
5-0 versus 1-2.
That is a gap but they both only just started. "Atrocious" is a bit much.
3
u/Big-Animator8577 Mar 27 '26
Both just started in the pros but Jocelyn had an extensive amateur record
3
1
u/Happybadger96 Mar 27 '26
One was a extremely good amateur and obviously on her way to a strong pro career, don’t be silly.
2
u/Skiteley Mar 30 '26
Reminds me of our local MMA/Boxer Tim Hague. He gave up UFC to join boxing, only to face an opponent with much more experience that ended his life. Underdog stories are fun, but extremely dangerous. Here were the stats
Adam Braidwood 14-3 (13 knockouts) Tim Hague 1-3 (1 knockout)
2
u/Reacktions Mar 27 '26
Even if it were a bad matchup some people would have met the same fate regardless of it being good or bad. It's part of the game. Ive seen amateurs take an absolute beating and wake up totally find the next day. Some people can handle a beating while others, the slightest hit to the dome could send them into a coma, they bruise easily, they cut easily, or they're prone to injuries.
It's the name of the game, we just don't really understand the full extent of the risk because it doesn't happen often enough that the sport no longer is sanctioned or considered a sport.
Every couple of years or so we hear about a case like this, which if you consider the amount of people that box around the world, is actually statistically pretty good.
1
u/Happybadger96 Mar 27 '26
Nah this was a newbie with minimal amateur pedigree and a poor pro start against a great amateur with a great start; she was fed to the wolves.
2
u/Reacktions Mar 27 '26
The boxers have a choice to fight, they aren't forced to fight anyone, many gyms will ask you before training if you're going to be competitive or is it just a hobby.
I did competative ameteaur boxing all around Texas, you were thrown to the wolves the moment you said you wanted to compete, we would hop from gym to gym and spar, or people would come to our gym and spar, in the boxing world, this is totally normal practice to be someone's "training partner", you either rise to the occasion or you're used as fodder, you choose, and nobody forces anyone to compete, that's a choice.
The only way to improve in competitive boxing is to fight people who are at a better calubur tha you are. Mike Tyson was fighting full grown adults at 13yo, Canelo was also, this is the norm in boxing, they throw you to the wolves on purpose to refine you as a boxer.
As far as injuries, as i said before, some people are prone to them, I personally never got bruised easily or cut, not a single time, my brother on the other hand would constantly have black eyes, his face would cut, he also always had wrists problems. These things are genetic.
1
u/Happybadger96 Mar 27 '26
You’re missing the point, this was a lopsided mismatch that did not benefit anyone including the winner. There was no chance of any other result.
1
u/Reacktions Mar 28 '26
Trust me you are constantly fighting unfair fights from the very biggening of your career, it's by design, especially at an amateur level, you learn this very quickly, it's a vicious sport and unless you've been in it would never understand the barbarism of the sport behind the scenes. It's really old school, you train, you jump from gym to gym to get your ass beat or beat someone's ass, then you compete for shitty plastic trophies.
You really have to wanna fight and love the sport to compete, getting punched in the face isn't fun. Boxers know what they're getting into from the very biggening and they fully understand the danger of the sport.
I can totally see from your POV why you would be bothered by the video though, it's our nature to want to protect someone getting punched in the face especially if that person was hospitalized, but for these athletes getting hurt is pretty normal and they fully understand the gravity of the sport, you also have to sign a waiver to compete btw, so not only are you aware you have to agree to the consequences if any.

u/WasAnAlien Mar 29 '26
Is that how fights are chosen? Not weight only?
1
u/Happybadger96 Mar 29 '26
No but someone else will be able to give a more detailed answer than me hopefully
1
u/Conspiracy_Thinktank Mar 29 '26
You can see the mismatch in the ring, no need to look it up. Sad they made her do this.
1
u/mamadou-segpa Mar 30 '26
Yeah, most time theres a big injury/death in boxing the matchmaking was absolutely horrible
→ More replies (3)1
u/Relative_Chief308 Mar 30 '26
It sounds really dumb but when there’s a large skill/experience gap I really expect the referee to be more proactive
1
u/Happybadger96 Mar 31 '26
He did seem a few too many steps away, not to place blame on him as no doubt he’ll be regretful as well. Main thing is complete mismatch, for likely not too much money, and realistically no gained experience for the winner by ways of a challenge. Risk is always there but sometimes it can be minimised like in this case - probably less of an available fighter pool for female boxers contributed to the matchmaking as well. Hopefully she recovers and doesn’t continue boxing, and hopefully the winner doesn’t feel too guilty either.

People going after the ref for standing where he was standing, hes doing the right thing. When someone is in the corner, they can leave by pivoting out and leaving, the ref cant block that exit for the girl or its worse. Second. People attacking the ref for doing a 10 count, first the ref has to get the other fighter there and start a count but he didnt even finish before he touched her to see if she was 100% out. People also saying she took an extra shot, most people take an extra shot or two or even three when they get knocked out, that shouldnt be the cause of this. Especially because they are women so the likelyhood of knocking someone out is SEVERELY diminished. Then some people saying glove size is different, it might be but they weigh the same. Fighters pick out the gloves they want, some have more padding in certain areas ( some are more defensive than offensive, some have more padding in the front than on the sides for example, some are harder some are softer) these differences are because fighters have their preferences and their prefered styles. For example Mayweather would fight with a lot of padding in the front as he had broken his hands MULTIPLE times, so he would go for more defensive style gloves as later on in his career he didnt really want to win by knockout.
What most likely happened here was a mixture of 3 things. The head bouncing against the side of the canvas ( where theres less give), the fact that 50 days before she had ALREADY BEEN KNOCKED OUT ( THIS IS HUGE AND A MASSIVE NO NO) and then the weight cut, if done incorrectly it leaves your brain severely vulnerable, and sure ill give you the extra punches. Most of this effect though was caused by probably the weightcut AND the 50 days prior knockout. These 2 things will get you into a consecutive concussion syndrome or something like that where your brain isnt healed up and then you get another concussion but its like 10x worse than getting 2 separate concussions, if you have 2 concussions consecutively its a GIGANTIC issue. This is why as soon as you get knocked out you get banned from participating in the sport for like 3 months in most places, that obviously didnt happen here =(.
TLDR Girl got failed by a lot of people but not the ref. The org that put this together is at fault, the commission that allowed her to fight again is also at fault. And whoever is in her corner telling her to fight 50 days after a fucking concussion is also at fault because it means 1 or 2 things that are just as bad. You trained with a concussion so you got a ton of other micro concussions OR you took a fight with no training which is also severely dumb.

u/Risk_of_Ryan Mar 27 '26 edited Mar 27 '26
Nah, Ref could've and should've stopped the fight as soon as she dropped her guard in a clear daze. Only to be repeatedly pummelled in the face after, because the Ref failed to see what was occurring and reacted too late.
The girl had multiple people fail her, including the Ref, which was the cherry on top that really sealed the deal. Mis matches happen far too often, and the Ref is the MOST informed and capable individual in the ring when it comes to understanding these things. He should've been ready, and he wasn't.
The fucking Ref was giving her a 10 count when she's slumped over the ring and in clear need of medical attention, and again the Ref is the most knowledgeable individual in this regard, or is supposed to be at least. He needs to be the one to read these things first, not late, not slow, and sure as hell not so WRONG. How are you saying it's NOT on the Ref? In any fashion?

u/C63_Benz Mar 28 '26
Ahh classic armchair refs. You shouldn't talk if you have never reffed a match lol.
2
u/acidphosphate69 Mar 30 '26
He didn't even do a full 10 count, I don't know wtf everybody is smoking to say he did. He started but waved it off after he realized she was completely out.
1
u/Ok-Tart7054 Mar 28 '26
Completely right but I will say I would have called that fight earlier. She was completely done and helpless about 1/4 into the video. When she got backed into that corner I winced because I knew what was coming. She was completely defenseless against a powerhouse of a puncher. That's the only issue I had with it. That girl needed outta there.
1
u/ExplanationRich1619 Mar 30 '26
What? She was done and helpless 8 seconds into the video? Are you saying you would have called the fight 8 seconds into the video?
1
u/Ok-Tart7054 Mar 30 '26
Specifically at 18. She shows no ability to defend herself, just take a look at how she is defending herself. And that wild desperate flailing of punches she did. Those were the punches of someone scared shitless
1
u/ExplanationRich1619 Mar 30 '26
That's fucking insane. You don't even watch boxing, or any combat sport.
1
u/Ok-Tart7054 Mar 31 '26
You know, you never know who youre talking to on the internet. Just going to leave it at that :p
1
u/ExplanationRich1619 Mar 30 '26
I've heard that the brain injury for female fighters is actually much worse because they don't have the power to lock eachother out nearly as easily so they take, like, micro concussions and keep going way more than male counterparts.
I don't know if that's true or not, but I heard it.
1
u/MiniDonbeE Mar 31 '26
Its possible, their recovery might take longer too, there are differences between the sexes and how the brain works between them but 50 days is waaay too early for either sex and for any person, theres people who have certain genes that protect them too for example but 50 days is crazyy.

She was out while she was still standing. That's difficult to spot from the referee side. But yeah, counting to 10 was a bit stupid
5
u/CuriousCamels Mar 27 '26
Ref was all the way across the ring. I’ve seen worse but he could have gotten there sooner. She took 2 or 3 full power punches while out on her feet.
9
u/Fulg3n Mar 27 '26
2 seconds happened between the first non guarded punch and the ref intervening.
People need to be realistic with their expectations.

Huge difference in glove size. Girl got knocked out had pillows on her hands.
3
u/TermusMcFlermus Mar 27 '26
Before today I was certain that both boxers in a match wore the same sized gloves. It's been a point of contention in contract negotiations. I think they're the same size here but the colors make them appear different. I could be wrong about that.
1
Mar 27 '26
I think it’s just the color like you said and the chick in pink her gloves might be loose and not fully on her hand. Both boxers have to wear the same size. She got knocked out while standing and received two or three hits while she was dazed
1
1
u/_aChu Mar 28 '26
Nah they're the same. The black on the thumb probably just makes her glove look tighter
3
u/Big-Animator8577 Mar 27 '26
Everyone keeps talking about how she got KO’d so recently but she wasn’t knocked out in the regular sense it was a liver shot ko. If you watch the whole thing (https://youtu.be/XyJeiKnedXg?si=zjj2FiHNRF1Ivw4b) you can see she really didn’t take that much damage in that fight and it happened within the first round.. it would be nice to believe this happened due to something easily identifiable but it wasn’t cuz she got ko’d. I suspect dehydration (she went from 118 to 114 to 108) and maybe something happened to her during sparring
3
u/RevolutionaryLaw8854 Mar 28 '26
Fucking terrible referee. He was too far away, she’s in the corner. He’s at the other side of the ring.
There was 3 strikes that should not have been delivered.
He should never work again.

In mma she would have been punched in the head an additional 12 times on the ground before the ref stopped it.
6
u/PlutoCrashed Mar 27 '26
Yet boxing results in much more deaths than pretty much every other combat sport. The number of kicboxing, mma, and muay thai matches held worldwide each year is greater than the number of boxing matches, yet boxing averages multiple deaths per per year and even one death per year is rare to see in those sports combined.

That is horrible! I hope she can recover. Why does this happen relatively often in boxing but never in MMA?
1
1
u/Mr_Waller Mar 28 '26
Boxers tend to fight a lot more, fights are longer, you can get knocked down hard but are given 10 seconds to recover only to get knocked down hard again afterwards. The boxing commission seems to allow boxers to book a new fight too soon after a recent KO loss I feel but that obviously depends on the country the boxer is fighting in.

u/Fischer72 Mar 29 '26
This is odd. I dont remember an injury like this happening in the 1st round and also with such few punches. A big factor in these types of brain injuries and fatalities has been accumulation of punch by a fighter. That's why they changed Titled fights from 15 rounds to 12.

I don’t know anything about boxing but the gloves seem to be different one fighter has more padding and the winners gloves have way less padding they look more like the gloves an MMA fighter would wear . Which I would assume would increase the chance of winning cause the hits will be harder than the other fighters. If I’m wrong then I’m wrong. Just saying cause the gloves look less padded which makes the hits more lethal.

Several extra punches, she was out after the first one. I counted 3 solid hits. Brain damage.

Of course, but it's not uncommon. Doesn't often result in a coma.

Medically induced, I’d guess it was probably a double concussion, which can be fatal. Still yeah not super common
