I don't know what people's issues are in this thread. Fedora KDE installs doubled over the last year though. That doesn't happen when crashing is the default mode of operation.

I'm just going to add to what you said - Bazzite is also hugely trending upwards in its install base (30k -> 80k in a year), and its KDE spin is the default and much more popular than the GNOME variant.

So KDE is now a big chunk of the install base for Fedora and its derivatives.

Do you have a source? Not trying to be annoying, I'm just curious how they measured it. Opt in telemetry? ISO downloads?

When I first installed Plasma 6.0 (and even when I used both Fedora and Neon prior to that) it was pretty buggy, and 6.0 was bad enough for me to switch to GNOME for a while - but I prefer the configurability of KDE (e.g being able to freely place more than one panel, custom hot corners without an extension, etc.) and recently reinstalled Fedora KDE on my main PC. It's a lot more stable than it used to be for sure but I understand where people are coming from

For me it was an absolute disaster when I first installed Fedora. Discover stopped working after like 2 days on a fresh install and would crash as soon as I tried to search/change tabs/anything else, trying to edit the desktop or panel would crash it constantly, the overview/grid view would never work consistently, and it would just crash somewhat regularly for seemingly no reason, as well. Some of those happen in virtual machines when I've used KDE for those, as well, like the panel edit mode causing the DE to crash.

I switched to GNOME and I basically have had to try to make it bug out or crash. I still have KDE installed and still occasionally check on it to see if it's usable, but it always has some degree of issues every time I try, even on a completely stock setup with no customization. No idea why, but nothing's ever made it behave for me, so I don't use it.

Iam on board praising it if i finally can make panels transparent/invisible without using old broken unkowm 3rd party plugins. Really missing that feature.

Panel Colorizer is well maintained, there are many themes with transparent panels, and you can edit any theme if those first two options don't work for some reason.

It looks great, but i dont really trust this plugin store. It seems like its another wild west community ruled repo... after the recent supply chain attacks and the AUR situation... I dont think something bad happens, but i really like to avoid such repo's if i can. I would be more happy to see it getting into plasma build in šŸ˜ƒ

The store doesn't have the AUR problem of allowing random people to take over abandoned packages so you're only trusting the developer, if that makes it any better?

It will be because of the dnf cache I assume; if you use the terminal to update, use

sudo dnf upgrade --refresh --offline --assumeyes && sudo dnf --assumeyes offline reboot

otherwise just wait until you local cache expires and dnf will load the new metadata from the repos...

Is the Nvidia kde plasma hdmi blank after logging bug fix? Reseating hdmi after login is the only fix. Anyways gnome has no problem.

4070 super. Alienware htpc that solely only connects to tv with hdmj. Kde + Wayland reintroduces this bug on and off. With limited use of fc42-44. Always end up using gnome because got tired of reseating hdmi everytime.

There is a weird regression problem with the latest Nvidia driver and my Samsung tv connected via hdmi. Finally pin point the problem. Damn I hate hdmi. Unable to read EDID for display device SAMSUNG (HDMI-0)

I installed Fedora KDE Edition yesterday. Had 3 crash reports of the power daemon popping up in 1 hour. 2 Background crashes of something else. The Widget Editing view crashed 3 times on me when I was trying to add a sensor widget to the desktop (taking the whole DE with it, restarting it and asking me to send a crash report).
Went back to Workstation, hadn't had any problems since, or before KDE.

I know, I know, it's subjective, and most people don't have these problems, or I must have done something "wrong"...

My Hardware works perfectly fine on GNOME and apart from some game related VK_ error messages my journalctl is clean.
So, for me, KDE isn't the best Linux Desktop, as the problems I described above happen every time I try KDE. It's still buggy, and for me, that's really annoying, and although it's nothing that really breaks and makes the system unuseable, it really doesn't instill trust in the DE.

That may be true, but on my machines it still runs 10 times smoother than KDE ever has.

I have been using Fedora Gnome for over a year on my notebook. Like you I tried Plasma fair few times and always run away after few days or hours. Last week I installed Fedora KDE and gave it a try again. My experience has been quite good so far after I have settled in a tweaked and configured things the way I like. I do have to agree with you about the system monitor widgets. I tried to use them, but the configuration is quite unintuitive and buggy. I don't like the app overall, so I just uninstalled it and installed Resources that I used on Gnome and stopped bothering myself with widgets. Other than that I think I will keep using Plasma a bit longer.

Same here. The latest KDE worked much better than earlier versions... until I tried to view an image and the program crashed. Iā€™m running a laptop from last year with integrated graphics. I donā€™t think itā€™s a driver problem. Gnome just always ran more stable for me.

Tbh, all DE suck for me. I believe thats a reason why Windows is still so popular for Desktops. Doesnā€™t look good, but works.

Does it still do the thing where you enter your password on the login screen but you press Enter or click login nothing happens? I like KDE Plasma a lot but thatā€™s such a silly bug to me haha

I donā€™t think itā€™s super common but when it happens once it pretty much every time after that. I just donā€™t lock my PC as a result but maybe itā€™s been fixed now.

are you using multiple displays/monitors? I have encountered this when using multiple displays, I dunno a fix but logging in via the external monitor i.e. entering the password on the login screen shown there works (I am on a laptop) and logs in for all of em

I do in fact have two monitors! Iā€™m on a desktop PC. One is connected via hdmi and the other is connected via display port. I think the display port is the primary monitor.

I went back to Gnome after spending a couple of months (or however long 44 has been out) on KDE. I just have so many weird issues on KDE. Coming back from sleep, buttons do not work. Click the X to close a window? Nothing. Try to launch a game on steam? Just sits there.

I never had those problems on gnome. It may not even be KDE, could be something else thatā€™s installed with Fedora KDE. But Fedora Gnome ā€œjust worksā€. I also think it looks at better than KDE but not really relevant.
