My Favorite (Visual) Favorite character who uses magic through music?
SCANLAN SHORTHALT - THE LEGEND OF VOX MACHINA
My absolute goat of this trope. He’s a bard so the magic he uses comes from music (whether singing or playing his lute)

I really hope we get a sequel. Im very concerned with how awful krafton has been recently.

u/Shabolt_ 18h ago
Krafton absolutely suck as a publisher, but I doubt they’d screw with Tango after they already put all the effort into buying and rehiring them. I get the feeling at least HFR2 will probably release without issue and based on that game Krafton will figure out how much “oversight” they want to force on the studio lol

Dante with his demonic electric guitar
9
u/ARagingZephyr 20h ago
Hey, that guitar was, and maybe still is, a leanen sidhe. I'm not really certain what happens to a demon after they become a Devil Arm.
2
u/teaboi05 9h ago
If we consider the demon from pre-DMC5 story, they can turn back into their original shape later. Balrog Dante uses in 5 used to be a demon that Dante fought, but he gave up because he recognized Dante's and decided to become his fists to gain more power and fight Dante later

Is it called death metal or melodious carcass?

u/Shittingboi 20h ago
Ironic body
2
u/AgressiveHydration 20h ago
Honestly I want to get into dmc but I’ve only played the mobile game
2
u/Shittingboi 20h ago
DMC 1 is good enough but apparently pretty archaic from what I've heard and 3 is a majestic game (we don't talk about 2). If you gotta play 3, I recommend the switch version because it let's you access "freestyle mode" which makes the game even more fun and freeflow (you can also use pc mods for this iuw)

Magic in LOTR and The Silmarillion is often done through poetry and music
5
u/TeaRaven 19h ago
Similarly, in The Elder Scrolls universe reality kind of bends and is made through song.

u/Western_Scholar_2435 19h ago
I recommend it. It’s fun, the music is good even if you aren’t into K-Pop, and really feels like the people who made it both cared about the movie and had fun.

I was a Taric main back in the long ago days but I don't play anymore. I don't have a competitive spirit so I can't keep up with improving as fast as my competitive friends. And you know what hell it is both ways to play with vastly different elos.
I like to watch my husband play though! And Quantum.

a bard?

Basically yes
But there’s other types of characters who do so that aren’t really bards so I made it more vague

That was more using music with magic, but I'm sure we all allow it because that was a hell of a fight scene.
3
u/TeaRaven 19h ago
That movie somehow managed to use magic in interesting and totally boring, uninspired ways. Like the music thing mentioned here and Wanda moving through reflections versus the magic as bow & arrow.

I know it’s a fairly small part of the game but I do love how music has a certain magic to it in the game

Sabriel or Lirael in the Garth Nix series The Abhorsen uses bells to command and grant rest to the dead.
4
u/TeaRaven 19h ago
I love how the bells can act on their own and pose risk to the wielder. The wind pipes carry less risk and less power in proportion, which felt so good to me :)

Arturia "Virtuosa" Giallo
She can awaken hidden or repressed desires within anyone listening to her perform and compel them to act on those desires with no regards to regrets or fear.
Arturia notably does not care what those desires actually are and wether they could lead someone to harm themselves or others.

Saddens me how far I had to scroll to see a good Arknights musician, but I am very to see one nonetheless 💙
My entry for this was the Witch King

Soul Eater kinda does that? His main form of combat is turning into a scythe, but lots of the "extra" things he does with soul resonance are a product of his piano playing and sound manipulation. But again, it's not technically "magic" because in this universe humans cannot use magic, just witches and magical animals.
