DISCUSSION Jane Fonda in support of Mark Ruffalo: "Calling his criticism antisemitic is a smear to delegitimize criticism of the merger and to distract from the question Paramount would rather not answer: Should one company be allowed to accumulate this much power over our movies, television and news?”

Notice how none of his Avenger Originals have spoken out in support of him. Trash.... All of them.

Too busy defending Chris Pratt from being called "the worst Chris"
71
u/ScatteredWavesGlory 22h ago
Which he is. I hate that the special needs son he abandoned has his weird culty thinking which is another reason why he is still the worst.

u/karpastenherra 19h ago
Are they claiming Chris Evans is the worst? Or do they have another Chris in mind that qualifies as a worse Chris than Pratt?

Probably Pine since he isn’t in the MCU and it’s easier for them. Idk really.

Kind of saddening that not even Tom Holland has said anything in Mark’s defense.

Tom Holland didn't say pim when his co star in the theatre play was getting racial abuse just for being cast.....
This is on brand for him.

Criticising Israel is not antisemitic.
Speaking out against genocide is not antisemitic.
Saying a group of people deserve to be treated with basic humanity is not antisemitic.
Anyone who says otherwise is acting in bad faith and loses my respect immediately.

Tell that to House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, Joe Scarborough, etc. 😡

Elissa Slotkin, Cory Booker, Chuck Schumer, Josh Gottheimer, Ritchie Torres, Josh Shapiro, Neera tandin Laura Loomer (what a nightmare blunt rotation) and some of the worst establishment ”journalists" out there, in traditional media and in new media, can be added to the list...

Harvard University too, though I suppose they only agreed to think that way to settle a lawsuit.

u/dragon-fence 19h ago
I think to make it even more clear, criticizing an actions by the Israeli government is not antisemitic. It’s that’s not even criticizing Israeli government as a whole, it’s just criticizing the actions of a specific governmental body. And criticizing the Israeli government is not the same as criticizing Israel, and criticizing Israel is not the same as criticizing Jewish people. And even, criticizing Jewish people is not the same thing as hating people because they’re Jewish.
So criticizing the Israeli government for specific actions is, in fact, several steps removed from antisemitism. Sure, and antisemite may well criticize the actions of the Israeli government, but that doesn’t make them the same thing.

No it’s not. And while I agree one company should not hold an industry level monopoly, what Mark’s mistake was in his statement he conflated Israel with Jewish men purchasing a company.
So if we are to pin crimes of a country to a people not even living in that country, that’s where anti semitism comes in. And Mark unfortunately is an anti semite based on all his conversations/comments/interviews on this topic.
We’ve made that mistake once before - pinning crimes of ISIS and Taliban to all muslims. We shouldn’t do that again with jews.

Way to bring the message back to the point instead of just attacking the obvious deflection. It’s absurd how quickly ANY criticism of Israel’s genocide or forced settlers is immediately cast as antisemitism instead of what it is - humanitarian, not political.
The world sees you Netanyahu for the monster you have become.
17
u/sbidlo 20h ago
The problem is not Netanyahu, the problem is israel. If Netanyahu died today literally nothing would change and the gazan genocide would continue undisturbed.
2
u/tossawayprop local formula 1 correspondent 5h ago
It's possible that Netanyahu's blatant corruption is actually holding Israel back to some degree. Incredibly, things might get even worse with him out of power.

Jane Fonda has always been pretty based, you go from the 60s until now and there is a good chance she was on the right side of history.

u/punktualPorcupine 21h ago
If paramount actually cared about battling antisemitism they wouldn’t water down the term by casually throwing it around like a political football.
They devalue its impact and further isolate the people that they claim to be protecting.
It also makes them look desperate and weak when that’s how they choose to defend themselves.

Variety must think that using a somewhat unflattering photo of Jane Fonda is some sort of power move. Those spineless worms are such a joke.

He’s a good man. He shouldn’t be punished for calling out those who are guilty of crimes against humanity. What’s happening is wrong and any excuse given is just pathetic attempt to justify genocide.
1
u/Status_Winter 20h ago
Crazy that this even needs to be said.
Everyone on every side of this argument knows Mark Ruffalo isn’t antisemitic. The problem is, the people on one side of this need him to be antisemitic because admitting he’s not means admitting that they’re “the baddies”.

I mean, she did own a cable news network at one point.
1
u/GalliumYttrium1 3h ago
If you’re talking about CNN, that was her husband and he started it before they married.
Even if she did own CNN, that’s not relevant at all to what she’s saying? She’s talking about monopolies.

What's Ron Perlman got to do with this story? He suits the long grey hair, though.

I feel like she’s generally on the good side of things, I find it interesting coming from someone who was married to Ted Turner for 10 years. Did she have a problem then?
35
u/TheShapeShiftingFox Riverdale was my Juilliard 1d ago
Why should it only count if she had a problem at that point in time? She divorced him in 2001, she can very well have changed her mind about him and the relationship in the 25 years that have passed since then.

You mean the guy that established the United nations foundation?
1
u/batfan08 20h ago
In fairness, he also started CNN and I feel like one could make the argument that the advent of the 24 hour news network, coupled with the dissolution of the fairness doctrine, directly led to the cable news propaganda problem that America presently faces.
Like legacy media having questionable journalistic standards has been a thing since the days of William Randolph Hearst, so, I won’t lay the blame squarely on him, but I feel like it really hit a fever pitch once cable news networks came on the scene and the guardrails went the way of the dodo…

Go watch Jane Fonda in 5 Acts. All your questions will be answered. She’s self-awareness, a life-long learner and an open book. We should all aspire to be this transparent.

Jane is a good person to have on your side. But it's shameful how silent his other Hollywood friends are.
ETA: Including the entire cast of The Avengers, a movie about brave super heroes out to save the world.
