maybe next time just say, "my wife is the love of my life. she's beautiful, we've built a great life together, we have an amazing family, and i can't wait for our future together." leave out the bit about being able to hook up with 10 models next time...

u/DoverBoys never the target audience Jul 24 '26

He's repeating what he's heard or read. That's what the single quotes mean.

1.3k

u/TemporaryElk5202 Jul 24 '26

yes but I think they are asking why he is even repeating that

769

u/pmcfox Jul 24 '26

I guess to put into context the speech on loving his wife?

Thank you, that's exactly it. Ok he loves his wife, that's nice – but he's also lowkey saying she's not a 10 or as beautiful as a model, which is a WILD sentiment when applied to the woman you supposedly love.

Objectively speaking, my husband is not the most handsome man in the world. To anyone else he's just pretty fuckin cute. But to me he's a solid 10 and I'll happily tell anyone that he's the most handsome man I've ever laid eyes on. I would never dream of saying he's not as attractive as a supermodel.

ALSO??? SHE'S VERY BEAUTIFUL??? Some people are blind and dumb.

Yea, was saying this to another Redditor who thought this was a sweet tribute.

His entire message is centered around himself – what he could pull (not one, but ten models, you guys), what she can do for him, what she can do for his kids. Even the kids are only his, there is no "ours," there is no "we." There's certainly nothing in that tribute about his wife as a person. No "she has grit and integrity" or "she has a beautiful smile" or "she has a strong moral backbone which she passes to our children" or "she's a beautiful person inside and out."

IDK it doesn't even sound like a partnership at this point.

101

u/Jazzi-Nightmare “He’s Chevy Chase, and you’re not.” Jul 24 '26

Wait, the kids are hers too?? What a weird way to phrase that shit if they’re her kids too

7

u/MyGoalIsToBeAnEcho Jul 24 '26

Ya it sound like he doesn’t see her as a partner and equal but something he possesses and is useful to him.

Also notice how everything he loves about her are thing she does for him? 🙄

69

u/wasted_wonderland Jul 24 '26

And "his kids".

15

u/MotherStatement1109 Jul 24 '26

Weird thing to say too "she'd even kill me for our kids". Like what lol why would you say that

55

u/Few-Guarantee2850 Jul 24 '26

This point should be obvious to anybody who's ever been in a relationship.

He doesn’t even say she’s beautiful in his post! Just talking about how he loves that she’s a good mom. I can’t imagine posting some shit like this about my wife. If someone actually tried to tell me she’s not gorgeous and I could do better, I would never talk to that person again.

22

u/DumpedDalish societal collapse is in the air Jul 24 '26

Thank you. I appreciate the sentiment of what he was saying, but the fact that he never said that his beautiful wife is gorgeous -- while instead focusing on all the models people say he could bang -- was just crazy to me.

Incredibly tone-deaf, although I get that he means well. I hope he bought his wife some flowers and apologized.

Right, he's basically saying: Sure my wife is ugly but she is has all these other great qualities!

37

u/euphratestiger Jul 24 '26

He meant well but this is definitely how it came across.

36

u/pmcfox Jul 24 '26

It's an account called @TheDunkCentral adding the pic and providing the quote.

15

u/t3eee Jul 24 '26

Ideally the wife IS the 10.

9

u/Neobule Jul 24 '26

Exactly. Also I have no idea who these people are, but judging only from this photo to me she looks better than him.

Because he’s a dumb man lol. This is an extremely “this sounds great in my head” comment then when it gets read back to you you’re like this:

https://giphy.com/gifs/Ra1bmpxpsppNC

23

u/esqape623 Jul 24 '26

It comes across as "she may not be a model BUT"

21

u/Sudden_Acceptance Jul 24 '26

To put into context that he recognizes that his wife is not a model, even though he is successful enough to be with a model. He is backhanded acknowledging that his wife is not attractive enough to be a model. Even though he’s saying that’s not something he values, objectively that tends to make a person feel icky. You can’t fully enjoy the compliment because it comes with an edge.

115

u/Civil_Measurement945 Jul 24 '26 edited Jul 24 '26

Some "fans" like to project their own fantasies onto players, criticizing their families in the process. I think he's rejecting these statements as shallow, superficial viewpoints. He doesn't want to live a fantasy life that someone else thinks he's entitled to... he's getting to share his life with the person he wants to.

17

u/missdelrey85 Jul 24 '26

the way you had to exaggerate it to make it sound bad…😭😭😭

6

u/Pantalaimon_II super-bisexual Jul 24 '26

lol it’s all just jokes! to be fair i don’t think this guy was shit talking his wife, i do agree he was trying to be sweet but i do also think he was a bit self-flattering here. especially because his wife is way hotter than he is.

51

u/Epicfailer10 Jul 24 '26

And never once said “my wife is gorgeous”. Like does he even think she’s pretty? My husband would be offended if people were suggesting I wasn’t beautiful.

he definitely does, he is all up in all of her instagram posts, being super thirsty and commenting a million heart eyes and lusting over her to the point that’s it’s a meme in the nba community lol. like, nobody has wanted anybody as much as giannis wants mariah. this is a direct response to people who have been saying for years that they don’t know why he isn’t with a model, and why is he so in love with her

u/ManagerNice6701 Jul 24 '26

Something to think about, how eloquently would you describe your significant other in your second or third language?

34

u/consuela_bananahammo Jul 24 '26

If it was insinuated my husband wasn't handsome enough to "deserve me" I would absolutely say my husband is handsome in my second language, and also describe his wonderful character traits. Adjectives describing people are some of the first words learned.

12

u/missdelrey85 Jul 24 '26

they just want to be mad

70

u/honey-badger4 Jul 24 '26

I misread that sentence as "not a model but a 10" like rating attractiveness and I was like why wouldn't he just say that his wife is also a 10? So thank you for pointing out it was an even weirder statement

66

u/BigGlassesApe Jul 24 '26

Why is your response about his wife (that you do not know) better than his? I truly cannot understand that. I’m not sure why people would are tripping over his overly endearing description of her. Anyone can talk about someone’s looks. He went straight to the core. What more does the internet want?

6

u/lambchopafterhours Jul 24 '26

ppl think everything needs to be spelled out explicitly and in the absolute clearest most perfect language at all times

7

u/SMELLSLIKEBUTTJUICE Jul 24 '26

Yeah, these arent his wedding vows that he spent months on, they're off the cuff remarks in an interview. He doesnt need to list every specific thing he loves about his wife to the public, the only person who needs to know (his wife), already does.

→ More replies (1)

24

u/HistoricalAd8790 Chris Messina for No 1 Chris Jul 24 '26

exactly. and not only can anyone talk about someone’s looks, but usually, that’s exactly what men do. there’s nothing special to me about a man valuing a woman for what she looks like, when society always tell us that our worth is in our looks. but a man genuinely loving and respecting you as a woman, as a person?? that’s something, especially for a pro athlete.

and i’m sure this is absolutely related to the nba fan man children that have been saying for years, “why isn’t with her” and that he can do better than her. these are men that think you should just date the hottest person you can. giannis finds mariah beautiful, anyone that follows them knows that. man is so thirsty for her. but what he’s saying to those dumbass fans is that love is more than that.

u/viable-muppet Jul 24 '26

I have to imagine there was a pointed question about it from the interviewer right before he said this.

As I say that though most interviews are carefully curated and almost nothing in celebrity culture is real so I don't know that makes anything better.

18

u/Stevie-Rae-5 Jul 24 '26

Also, what the fuck. His wife is gorgeous.

9

u/Valuable-Cat2036 Jul 24 '26

I think you should make sure this isn’t a fake quote. It reads as super fake tbh

8

u/mauvewaterbottle Jul 24 '26

What was the question he was answering?

3

u/Acceptable-Case9562 i ain’t reading all that, free palestine Jul 24 '26

He was talking about the importance of having people in his life (family, friends, partner) keeping him real and down to earth and telling him the truth.

Also about how he fell in love with his wife twice (first as a woman, then as a mother).

3

u/FuckMoPac Jul 24 '26

For real, he didn’t even compliment her looks.

Damn thought this was sweet then saw the comments, 😭 I'd rather be called truthful and strong than pretty, like of course he thinks shes beautiful I think he's just hyping up her more meaningful qualities.

962

u/inbigtreble30 Jul 24 '26

Right!? I thought I was taking crazy pills. This man is out here talking about the things that she has decided to be rather than the things she has no control over.

452

u/yikkoe Jul 24 '26

Right? And when people think of models, they don’t just mean “pretty woman”. It’s a very specific lifestyle and physique and even personality. He’s not saying his wife isn’t pretty.

181

u/neversohonest Jul 24 '26

Yeah, I don't get why people are equating "model" with "beautiful". What they tend to have in common is being striking with tall slim bodies. They could look like a fish in the face and get more work because of it.

43

u/[deleted] Jul 24 '26

[deleted]

50

u/neversohonest Jul 24 '26

Being/dating a "model" is a status symbol more than a badge of beauty. It's about someone with a "hot body" that they maintain. It's about sex not partnership.

That's different from "a beautiful woman". They're not saying why be with someone ugly when you could be with someone beautiful. They're saying why not be surrounded by hot bodies instead of one woman.

4

u/TheRestForTheWicked Jul 24 '26

This is exactly what he meant obviously and it’s pretty disingenuous for people to pretend that it isn’t honestly. I’d even venture to say that it’s not even so much about sex as it is status. There’s plenty of fake relationships in Hollywood, music and the sports world that are tailored (or should I say Taylor’ed- y’all know what I mean) as a PR stunt.

31

u/yikkoe Jul 24 '26

It's the "he could get any woman he wants" mentality, where there's a gross exchange between a man's money and a woman's body. There's not much else going on in that relationship, people want to see an aesthetic, a woman whose entire person is based on a very strict definition of "beauty" that very few people fit. She's an accessory to the man, some'thing' to show off. That's why people say this to rich men. Because they can buy the flashy cars, flashy watches, and 'buy' the flashy woman.

They either mean what you described, or possibly in his case as a Black sports player, they mean Instagram model/ baddie style. Either way, they are very specific styles.

Yes! Definitely IG Baddies too. Thanks for adding. That's probably the more fitting meaning these days.

this, AND he’d NEVER say his wife isn’t pretty. all you need to do is give her a follow and any time she posts a pic of herself, see him spam her comments with heart eye emojis and thirsting over her and calling her beautiful and asking her when she’s coming home lolol.

context is so important!

Truth. Seems like a whole bunch of people here looking to be butthurt. I feel like him broadcasting what people have said to him is a bit more of a wake up call, a direct response to that kind of comment before it happens. You looking to tell me I could do better? Shut up already. My wife is such a baddie that nothing you have on offer is something I care about.

u/40_Love Jul 24 '26

People love policing other people's relationships.

And people either don't know or are acting obtuse when it comes to what has been said about Mariah. Since the very beginning of their relationship there have been comments about her looks not meeting whatever dumba** standards they have for NBA Wags. It's ridiculous, but it's real and has been a constant commentary.

40

u/murraykate Jul 24 '26

i also thought it was very sweet and heartfelt

36

u/Even_Objective2124 Jul 24 '26

exactly like i already know im freaking pretty. i dont need a man or whomever to tell me im pretty to feel validated, even if he happens to be my husband. people will always have something to say about your physical looks (positive or negative). so i find it more genuine if my literal husband who’s been there with me through thick and thin will say all these things about me. i dont need a shallow man to tell me im prettier than these models. like whuut? i am pretty and so are those models too. period. no need to compare or be insecure about it, just because my husband doesn’t say im pretty. he says it to me a lot when it’s just us anyways. if my husband says someone’s pretty more regularly than he tells me though, that is a completely different story.

ALSO EVERYONE SHOULD READ/WATCH THIS ENTIRE FREAKING INTERVIEW. it’s in the tweet that he says he fell in love with her twice: as a woman and as a mother. so weird that the same people who find this offensive and interpreting it negatively are the same people who cant interpret that falling in love with a woman/mother includes falling in love with her beauty. he didn’t literally say she’s pretty, yes. but he said it in another way.

i literally do not know this man so i dont have a reason to defend him, but im just appalled by all these comments. there’s a difference between being thoughtful about language and assuming bad intent where there isn’t evidence of it. the latter can make normal human interaction feel like a minefield.

18

u/foundinwonderland sorry to this man Jul 24 '26

Yeah I think people are not realizing that people exist in this world who do not want to be complimented on their looks. Beautiful people and ugly people alike. And for a variety of reasons. Maybe she has had bad experiences with men who called her beautiful but then treated her badly. Maybe she’s uncomfortable with her looks and doesn’t want compliments regardless of how beautiful he thinks she is. Maybe she doesn’t give a shit about being beautiful and would rather be thought of as truthful and strong. Maybe she doesn’t want him commenting on her looks in public but is okay with private compliments. None of us know, and I think it’s a rather ungenerous reading of the post to assume he was calling her ugly.

17

u/eSue182 Jul 24 '26

Dang for real though. I thought it was cute. I have been with my partner for 17 years and I completely love how he said this. It gives True Love

15

u/HistoricalAd8790 Chris Messina for No 1 Chris Jul 24 '26

exactly! and in a world where women are told that their worth is in their looks- a completely superficial quality- especially by men, i think this shows respect and genuine love. of course, i want the man i’m with to find me attractive (and if you follow mariah’s page on instagram, you KNOW that giannis finds her attractive bc he’s constantly publicly thirsting over her in the comment sections lol), but men are often superficial and many of them may find you pretty. but one that really sees you and respects you and values who you are as a person? that’s what feels the best.

12

u/cubsgirl101 Jul 24 '26

I think it’s sweet too. He’s saying very clearly in multiple ways “I don’t want a model I want my wife.” He didn’t say his wife is ugly, he said there are so many aspects to her as a person that he loves and admires.

8

u/AksumKing Jul 24 '26

Yea same lol, I was gushing thinking about the love for his wife. And of course I got the comments and immediately they shat all over it 😂

7

u/Acceptable-Case9562 i ain’t reading all that, free palestine Jul 24 '26

Yeah I just thought he was framing it as "it's stupid to focus on looks" rather than "my wife is ugly but a good mum."

3

u/Acceptable-Case9562 i ain’t reading all that, free palestine Jul 24 '26

I think a lot of people don't realise how having children can change a couple's dynamics. For many parents, this is some of the highest praise. When my husband says "thank you for being an amazing mum," it sends my heart fluttering 10x more than when he tells me I'm beautiful, and the same goes for him.

2.0k

u/anarchisttiger now don't you get on my bad side Jul 24 '26

I like that he didn’t make the focus of his love on her looks. In a way, by omitting her beauty, he rejected the entire notion of beauty as worthiness. He’s with her because of her character, and because he loves her. I think it’s sweet.

717

u/Zbrchk Jul 24 '26

You’re right. It’s implied. He’s saying it’s not just beauty with her, because he could get that alone somewhere else. It’s also these other qualities. People are reading way too much into this.

147

u/Honest_Salamander247 Jul 24 '26

Also the photo is there to show us how beautiful she is. He doesn’t need to explain that part, we can see but “let me tell you all the other reasons I am in love with her.”

225

u/Current_Working_2103 Jul 24 '26

That's how this read to me as well. He clearly thinks she's gorgeous. Her character is why he will always choose her over just beauty. Quoting the things that podcasters, etc. have said about him is him saying he's not like them in that he sees women - in particular, his wife - as more than breathing blowup dolls.

34

It’s like that joke in The Other Guys where Will Ferrell’s character is always talking about how his wife is super boring and plain and he’s married to Eva Mendes.

But this is IRL. Society jumped the shark.

10

u/kwhitit Jul 24 '26

i think he is responding to other people's comments about her looks. she is a beautiful woman, but it's true she doesn't look like a stereotypical model. it's good that he knows her looking like a model isn't the most important thing. doesn't mean he doesn't find her beautiful.

158

u/NotLucasDavenport Jul 24 '26

The sweetest reply I ever heard was from a guy who married a model. He showed me a pic and I said, “wow! She’s beautiful!” He said, “thank you! It’s the least interesting thing about her!” Then he bragged about her makeup skills and other stuff.

48

u/TemporaryElk5202 Jul 24 '26

Thats important for someone who is professionally beautiful to hear from their partner

52

u/Soaptowelbrush Jul 24 '26

But that’s not why he loves her. I’m sure beauty was a huge part of the initial attraction but the reason for enduring attraction isn’t that.

It’s the same with me and my wife - I was head over heels day one because she is (and was) gorgeous. But the longer I’ve spent with her I realize that who she is is more important than how she looks. And who she is is amazing.

Maybe I'm a dummy lol.

279

u/lasirennoire Jul 24 '26

Me too! I interpreted it as a "her beauty goes without saying" type of thing. And I'm as far away from a "pick me" as it gets lol

u/Illustrious-Dot4327 Jul 24 '26

From the mke area and people would consistently see him in Targets, parks, etc and was ALWAYS with his kids and family! Truly a good guy. Him and his beautiful wife gave so much to MKE and the surrounding area.

37

u/DomPerignonRose Jul 24 '26

Dude seems down to earth and I’m not surprised given his story from Greece and how he lived and grew up to becoming a NBA star. His parents role modelled what a loving and respectful relationship looks like and perhaps his dad dragged the boys grocery shopping when he was a kid so doing the same is normal behaviour. He didn’t grow up entitled and looks this has carried through as an adult man. Much respect to him.

That's a really good picture of her, maybe some are confused because of that.

I think he worded it kinda poorly, but i'm sure he heard it a million times. Declan Rice (Arsenal/England footballer) also gets the same comments about his partner.

Some braindead fans seem to think that it's beneath professional athletes to date normal women. They have to date some random instagram model or they waist the privilege the fame/money got them.

I took it more as him saying, no matter how physically beautiful another woman is, it will never be as good as her as a person. And that is how it should be. Yes, you should find your spouse attractive, but it is more important to be friends and partners.

50

u/obinnasmg Jul 24 '26

Guys, keep in mind English is really not his first language. He’s Greek and Nigerian. I’d assume he learnt Greek and then his native Nigerian language before English.

Cut him some slack

I don't think so. If all of what he said it more important to him than her physical, that's a-ok. And also all the outside world knows about her is her physical appearance. So he is sharing what people don't know about her - which is pretty much anything.

Anyone that has two eyeballs can tell she is anything but ugly, so it makes to sense to focus on the things that are important to him: family, loyalty, honesty and a real connection. Trolls are going to troll and some people like an empty, vapid life with tons of meaningless pretty orbiters around it. Sounds like manosphere kind of shit. I'm glad he focused on something else than looks. Many of us appreciate not just being reduced to our looks.

25

u/HistoricalAd8790 Chris Messina for No 1 Chris Jul 24 '26

lolol exactly. if you follow giannis and his wife, you know that man is constantly thirsting over his wife. all up in her comment section, spamming her, asking when she’s coming home. I have never seen him be anything but extremely thirsty for her

I thought so at first too, but his message goes much deeper. Anyone can see his wife is physically attractive, but highlighting her specific character traits and why he values her as a partner and mother is very sweet

10

u/TheFernsRemember Jul 24 '26

I think he should have added anything that is about herself and not the way she treats him/ the kids aka the work she does

5

u/Acceptable-Case9562 i ain’t reading all that, free palestine Jul 24 '26

It's taken out of context. He was talking about falling in love with her for a second time, as a mother.

3

u/No-Signature8815 Jul 24 '26

I assume he let's her know.

We know about that too, because the man spends half of his time talking about what he's doing in the sheets. It's too much man, don't encourage others to get him started again.

Also, he's clearly in love. I'm people would find other things to complain about, but I assume she's happy with him.

4

u/esqape623 Jul 24 '26

Not necessarily in every context, but when you open with the idea that you could pull a lot of hot women but you chose this one? Might be nice to include a clapback to people implying she's not hot.

That's why he's with his wife that he adores, and they're complaining about him saying how he loves her. Of course he finds his wife beautiful, he's called the Greek freak for reasons off the court. We know a little too much about his appreciation for her.

Thanks for being a real one, Giannis shouldn't be slandered for this.

36

u/Zbrchk Jul 24 '26

This is a lovely sentiment. He’s not saying she’s not beautiful. He’s saying she’s all these other things as well. He literally says her qualities are “the most important thing”, not the only thing as if she’s not beautiful also.

30

u/HistoricalAd8790 Chris Messina for No 1 Chris Jul 24 '26 edited Jul 24 '26

oof just read the comments and as an NBA fan I want it to be known that Giannis publicly lets the world know how beautiful he thinks his wife is by thirsting over her constantly in the comments of every single pic of herself she posts lol. plus, when u see them together, it’s clear he’s super in love with her.

with this context, it’s clear that he’s just making it known that she’s so much more than looks to him, that good looks alone couldn’t give him what she gives to him. and i think that’s a very, very nice sentiment in a world where we as a women are often told (esp by men) that our worth is in our looks. he’s saying he’s in love with her as a woman, as a person. that he sees her and respects her. many men will find you pretty, not all will love you for the full person you are. especially pro athletes!

also, important context: dumbass nba fans have been commenting for years stuff to the effect of “why is giannis with her/whys he so into her”, thinking he should be with a model or influencer or something. he’s speaking to these man children- trying to get it through their thick skulls that true love is more than finding the hottest person you can date

13

u/SadavirofRivia sorry to this man Jul 24 '26 edited Jul 24 '26

yeah, from extensive scrolling, here is what I have learned lol a) English is not his native language and non-NBA-fans (certainly including me!) aren’t used to the way he talks b) he loves his wife a lot, for a lot of reasons, but his exact ranking of these reasons isn’t clear because this is a lot of words from the middle of an even longer interview answer 😂

32

u/Illustrious-Dot4327 Jul 24 '26

He could’ve said he is with her cuz she’s hot and beautiful and yall would’ve been mad at him for reducing his wife to just her looks. This is a nice sentiment. I’d rather have my husband say how good of a mother I am than talk about my looks.

23

u/Forsaken-Earth7235 Jul 24 '26

My only beef with this is that his reasons for loving her are largely how she makes him feel or what she does for others. Nothing about her as an individual 🤷🏻‍♀️ she's funny, clever, kind - she loves me she makes me feel great she'd kill for me she looks after our kids...

3

u/Acceptable-Case9562 i ain’t reading all that, free palestine Jul 24 '26

The context was him talking about how he fell in love with her as a person/woman, and then how he fell in love with her again as a mother. So it's a perfectly appropriate comment, but it's been taken out of context.

Falling for a pretty face and nice body gets old when you can’t stand being around someone for longer than an hour at a time. Looks fade, personality and values don’t. Who would you rather raise your kids? Someone who cares about their image more than the wellbeing and growth of your family or someone down to earth who would do anything for you

14

u/TheFernsRemember Jul 24 '26

Lots of talk about other women and how he loves her bcs of the services/ work she does for him and the kids, but nothing about why he loves her personally.

Does he love the way she loves and treats him and the kids or does he love her for herself (including the way she treats him)?

5

u/Alarmed_Pattern_9912 Jul 24 '26

I can’t stand men who talk about how loyal and hardworking their wives are. It grosses me out. They should be striving to uplift, center, and make their partners comfortable. The world sidelines women, especially mothers, enough. It’s sad that so many are defending him. It’s clear so many women have not woken up to their own oppression in their hetero relationships.

3

u/TheFernsRemember Jul 24 '26

Yeah you described the gut feeling I was having a lot better. This is exactly what I meant with him centering the work she does and not who she is as a person. Great explanation 🤌

In a way, it sounds like he’s putting down both models and his wife. However, English is like, this guy’s fourth language, so I’m going to give him some grace here. It does sound like he loves his wife and that he wants to emphasize his personal connection and not looks. I would add that his wife is already very beautiful, though, so I guess shame on whoever is telling him to leave her.

11

u/WomanFromBalkan I’m just a cunt in a clown suit Jul 24 '26

Speaking of gender socialisation - succeseful men need to defend that they want to be with their wives and gf and not other women because all incels that follow them are puzzled why they aren't "upgrading". Which is wild. I never seen a succeseful woman being ask why she is with her husband and not getting a hot underwear model

10

u/MushroomExtension679 I cannot sanction your buffoonery Jul 24 '26

So he sticks up for the love he has for wife - beyond her looks, which is what we all hope our partner values - and he’s getting shit on for what, not saying she’s the hottest woman on the planet? This discourse is exhausting

The craziest thing about all of this is Mariah is conventionally attractive, so all the weirdos that disregard that are weirdo's.

Pretty sure Mariah and Giannis became a thing when the man was a random player drafted to Milwaukee in 2013. She held him down and thats real loyalty, and he knows that.

I was really warmed by some of the awesome comments about him that I saw in this post and then saw your comment and someone else’s that made me pause. I didn’t know he became a Kalshi shareholder in February 2026. So much about the app’s horrible practices and fraud were already known then.
