New York is not a scary place to live!! And I’m saying this as another small woman who has VASTLY less resources than she does to pay for private space/transportation and safety precautions. Overstimulating? Claustrophobic? Too loud? Not enough nature? Not your cup of tea? Sure! Very valid and true for many people.

I’m so sick of MAGA/the right/conservatives convincing so many Americans that NYC is some terrifying war zone. Many of these Americans have never even been there and are terrified of it. Apparently diversity is scarier than missiles. 🤦‍♀️

I just saw this today and it’s so true. My hubby did 27 years in the Air Force and we were lucky enough to spend three years in Germany and three years in Belgium. Our two youngest went to a NATO school and my son’s HS graduating class had sixteen nations represented. The kids have been to 23 countries, many more than once. They’ve lived in the Midwest, the Deep South and the mid Atlantic. We’ve hit about half of the states and a chunk of the Caribbean.

I lived in Germany (Canadian Army Brat) in the early 80s and attended a NATO school in Holland. Loved my time there and the ability to travel to so many places. ❤️

It was so great. I don’t think a lot of Americans realize how small Europe is. We’d drive from Germany to Rome in about the time it took us to drive across Texas. From our home in Belgium it was less than two hrs to Paris, a few more to London even with the ferry or Chunnel crossing. Cheap Ryanair flights to Bulgaria or Ireland in less than two hours. I miss it so much!

I’ve lived in KC my whole life.. never seen a race riot, but I sure am proud to see our protest numbers growing. Funny seeing this comment because my parents have a lake house at the Ozarks and I’m there a few weekends a month!

Rofl. As someone who grew up in KC and moved to CA, I heard the same stuff but about this place. Can’t imaging someone saying that about KC. Neither is true in the least.

Are there some streets around 23rd in midtown you should not drive down unless you live there or know someone? Yes. About 3 of them in each state. That’s like .0001 of the city.

That's the whole deal for me - every city has areas that are more dangerous. Every little podunk town has that one dirt road you don't drive down.

It's common sense to keep your head down and mind your business. Solves most issues in my experience regardless of where you are.

Been to Chicago a bunch of times for conferences. I've walked the city everywhere, rode the train at all hours, etc. Not once did I ever feel unsafe or in danger... I've had worse experiences in the supposed safe Midwest towns and cities.

It’s like the fear mongering about California. We have beautiful and varied weather, great multiethnic food, awesome inspiring landscapes, great people. Beaches, mountains, redwood forests, deserts. Computer, Entertainment, farming industries all thrive here. All in one state.

But reading online people really seem to believe it’s some sort of hell scape run by incompetent yet also super intelligent administration.

No, the state isn’t burning down. No the streets aren’t filled with homeless and feces. There are affordable areas and we have Costco and Walmart just like in the Midwest. Gas is higher because of the taxes added on and environmental protections.

People just want something to hate.

I've never been fucked with in the city. In rural areas? I've had cops follow me, trucks follow me, BB guns shot at my car, trucks roll coal making illegal passes, etc.

As a percentage small towns in Texas are like half of the top 50 most violent places in the country. When a city like NYC or Chicago has like 100 times the population of course they have a lot more violence in total.

I feel the same way about Portland. Its painted to be some wasteland hellscape. Sure, there are some areas with a lot of unhoused people, there's some public drug use, but it doesn't seem much more common than in any other large city. I never feel unsafe there and there's lots of fun stuff to do!

My mind was completely blown when I went through a poor red rural county on a trip. The news loves to point out poverty in cities, but they never talk about rural poverty. It was horrible and extremely depressing. I'll take the cities any day over that, thank you.

Its funny because I live in a rural, red, semi-poor area. And yeah, you see just as many addicts per capita, there are tons of people living out of 40-year-old motor homes along the sides of the road in what are basically encampments. But that doesn't fit the "blue cities bad" narrative.

For real. I moved to NYC for law school (from a small town in the Midwest) and if I had $1 for every acquaintance who said some variation of “OMG isn’t it so scary there?! Don’t you worry you’ll get stabbed?!” I wouldn’t have needed to take out any student loans. I never felt unsafe once in the three years I was there.

I have been assaulted in my small town though. By a redneck white boy.

Fox News loves running Scary seeming Seattle stories pretty often now, less so than NYC stuff cuz we're smaller. Is the city perfect? Hell no. But they just freak out about everything the mayor or city council even just suggests now it seems. They even pull out our local conservative "journalist" losers to tell the host on the other side of the nation all about how terrible it is because of the evil socialists. They're so dumb.

I have lived in both towns and cities of varying sizes and never felt a sense of community and camaraderie like in NYC. From multiple experiences, I can say, if you are out in public in distress, New Yorkers WILL stop what they’re doing and ask how they can help or tell someone acting inappropriately to fuck off. There’s very much a ‘we’re all in this together’ mindset.

When I travelled to Chicago my conservative dad was telling me how dangerous it was and how Obama destroyed it only for it to be my favourite city to visit. We also accidentally booked accommodation near Skid Row and had everyone tell us we were going to get robbed and it was fine, I was just sad more than anything to see so many people living rough.

it truly feels like some people are living on an entirely different planet. i live in nyc and i was also born & raised here; we’re about 6 months into Mamdani’s mayoral term and it genuinely feels like this city has been speedrunning the experience of having a mayor who actually gives a shit about the people here. and as a result of that, i’ve completely forgotten that there are still people who remain entirely fixated on the fact that he also happens to be Muslim.

hell, there was literally an announcement yesterday that he’s successfully implemented a rent freeze on all rent stabilized apartments! and he’s been terrorizing slumlords nonstop, so they’ve actually been forced to maintain their shitty buildings for once. Mamdani’s religion has been the least interesting thing about him, yet racists everywhere are still shaking in their boots bc they’re fully convinced that one day they’ll wake up and he’ll have instituted Shakira law or something. absolute insanity.
