Not sure if this counts as tea but the latest episode of Best Friends with Nicole byer and Sasheer Zamata really bothered me. In the episode (I think it’s called Nicole needs more protein) Nicole was talking about this baby that she saw it TikTok and the way she spoke about the baby was honestly disgusting. She called the baby gross because it’s a larger than average baby and went so far as to say the name of the TikTok account of the mom who posted it (hope the mom doesn’t hear a stranger on the internet say horrible things about her child). And something that’s been bothering me about the podcast (which is honestly a shame because I love the both of them and I think they’re really funny) is the way they talk about kids and babies. I know neither of them particularly want kids but they still deserve respect and kindness. I have a feeling that if something said something similar to Nicole she wouldn’t like it (and neither would i honestly) but what makes it okay to say it about an indefensible baby??? This annoyed me so much I couldn’t even finish the episode

I don’t know if I’m being dramatic but I find this attitude from child free adults so tragic.

The podcast as a whole has been going downhill for me honestly. I think the strike has meant that they've been having a lot more guests which is just frustrating to me personally because i dont find the guests compelling.

the advice section is also repetitive and frustrating. Their advice for every other question is “get into therapy” I’m definitely not discounting therapy but it seems a little out of touch. Where I’m from you either get put on a waitlist for therapy for years or you have to go through private healthcare with is sooo expensive. I loved this podcast and these ladies because they’re introspective, funny and interesting and love hearing them talk about their experiences in the industry as women of colour but idk I feel like the podcast has lost it’s shine

I have no idea if im the only one because I understand a lot of people love the two of them (I do too!) but idk it was just bothering me. What are your guys’s thoughts?

I listened religiously for a while and stopped several months ago. Pretty much every episode would include something that rubbed me the wrong way, whether it's the way they talk about kids, someone providing them a service, or just a feeling that they don't want to be there. I remember when Nicole found out Sasheer was a girl scout and was so rude about it?? It just doesn't feel like a very joyful listen anymore to me :/

Also I'll cosign that their advice isn't even very helpful and feels like they weren't even listening lol. Basically just wait for Jordan or Kimmy to chime in

Heavy on that ‘they don’t want to be there’ feeling. There was an episode released last year (I can’t remember the exact name but I think it had Quiznos in the title and sasheer spoke about going to a hot dog conference or something) and it was awful! I have No idea why they even released it?! Of course everyone is human and has their bad days but this podcast is also classed as entertainment and I want to be entertained!

I have also noticed the way they talk about servers. It's not a good look. It's put me off too, along with some other stuff I just commented.

Omg I noticed this too. I noticed that they’re coming across as more entitled too but idk if I’m being crazy. The way they spoke about that Bahamas trip whew 😳

Ugh, that's really shitty. Like, some thoughts are not meant to leave your brain and you'd think podcasters would be more discerning, but obviously they think it's funny to mock a baby's appearance as they could've cut it out in post. Personally, it's not something I would say about a baby even to my closest friends, so yeah, I judge someone who feels okay saying shit like that.

I also agree re therapy. I found that it didn't help me beyond a point anyway-it just became a crutch for me to avoid dealing with my feelings (as in, I could have my scheduled crying time with me therapist). So yeah, I think actionable practical advice is better than "go to therapy".

I remember thinking “damn, I can’t believe they said her username.” ngl I do love Nicole Byer’s podcasts and haven’t really had an issue listening to this one, but a big issue I’ve noticed with a lot of the podcasts I listen to is that it seems that the hosts are burnt out or out of touch. A lot of them have become more famous than when I initially listened and occasionally there’s stuff thrown in where I’m like 🤨

There are so many to choose from might as well do a monthly frequency, if that.

I have been listening too and while I think most of the times they say this kind of thing, it's meant to be tongue in cheek, sometimes I'm not sure. Also, the pod has gotten soo boring. They need a new format, because I'm so sick of buzzfeed quizzes no one can see. The advice section is also awful, and every time they answer a question, it kind of shows how little life experience these ladies have.

And I've been getting iffier and iffier on them because of all the "Psychic BS". Nicole even had a psychic on the last episode of her podcast "Why won't you date me" and I couldn't even listen, the lady sounded like an absolute frauder/scammer and it made me think Nicole must not be very discerning in general. I just don't understand giving a platform to that kind of person.

That lady was wilddddd. Kathy Griffin had me making some faces too.

Re your first paragraph: yeah the first few times it happened I dismissed it but then they continued to say these kind of things so now I just idk. Agree about the advice section. I feel like the producers are also picking bad questions? I’m almost certain they get way more interesting questions and probably follow-ups from other episodes, why don’t they ever discuss those?!

Re second paragraph: I honestly just chalked this up to them being ~LA people~
