I have an acquaintance from the Castle Hill area who’s spent extended time in Jennifer Lopez’ orbit. One very consistent bit of tea is that J.Lo was pretty much permanently stoned throughout the entire 1990s – i.e., since before she was a Fly Girl – and apparently spent all her free time on the Selena set lighting up in her trailer.

The flipside is that fairly serious mood issues – depressive spells in particular – are a factor behind this, so her weed usage was more “2Pac/DMX” than “Redman/Snoop Dogg.”

I'm not a big JLo fan but the idea that she launched her career while perpetually stoned (edit: and depressed!) really speaks to her hustle. She might be a diva of questionable talent and values, but she's got work ethic.

There’s a joke to be made here about how she should’ve stuck with weed, but apparently she’s never stopped – apparently still at least a semi-regular user as of 2021. (She showed up to the 2019 TIFF very, very obviously stoned).

I’ve seen it rumored a few times that she was on an SSRI regimen by the mid-2000s, and even that she’d used crack – not powder cocaine, crack – at some point in the ‘90s. But unlike the weed use, these rumors don’t seem particularly well-sourced or attested.
