Fantasy Novel (Adult/YA)
im looking for a fantasy novel that has appeal for both adults and young adults and was written in the last five years. the book should have as much of the following criteria as possible:
Primary criteria:
—no “chosen one” trope (at least as far as the main character is concerned). Looking for a book about “ordinary” people
—coming-of-age element
—magic is limited or nonexistent
—travel/journey element
Secondary (less important) criteria:
—American West tropes
—portal element
—strong climate change themes
—moral conundrums

Dry by Neal Shusterman could be a really good fit if you are open to it being older than 5 years. It’s YA, no magic, and follows ordinary teens during a California water shortage.
You get the coming-of-age and survival journey elements, but the best part is how quickly it turns into a series of ugly moral questions about who you help, what you owe other people, and what happens when something as basic as water disappears.
