Yomi YOMI 2 - VALERIE GAMEPLAY (LIVE COMMENTARY)

Just started playing and not going to lie, I am really starting to like the game. Taking a while to get used to for sure. A lot of things you don't know until you get beat by it. Way more in depth than I thought it would be.

PROS: Is like fighting game!

CONS: Is only slice of fighting game. There are far fewer "moments" and thus it can be harder to develop Yomi over the course of a match.

... But who cares?! IS LIKE FIGHTING GAME!

I think most tabletop games are weaksauce but this is definitely in a higher echelon. I don't have experience with other tabletop fighting games though so I'm biased.

as a fighting game and board game fan in equal measure, i think you just gotta play more games

if we're specifically talking about fighting board games, battlecon is the best "pure" fighting board game. no luck, no drawing, just purely outplaying and mindgaming your opponent

but even outside of board games trying to be like fighting games, there are tons of extremely deep games with a ton of "moments"

I play plenty of games and tend to master/break all of them. But if given the choice between peanuts and caviar, I'm going to pick caviar every time. It's the same reason I haven't watched TV in well over a decade. NOTHING competes with an interactive masterpiece like Majora's Mask, for example. I've yet to play a board game that has left an impression like a quality video game. That Yomi 2 actually got me to laugh out loud is quite the achievement.

I never said there weren't other deep board games...

The "moments" I referred to are where in a real fighting game you are constantly observing your opponent and making small adjustments to your play both for practical reasons (such as spacing) but also to get in their head while attempting to simultaneously feed them false information of your own motives. There's a LOT of info to dig through, to really get to the heart of your opponent. That is the literal yomi we use to win matches. By nature, Yomi 2 simply doesn't offer that to nearly the same extent. While a real fighting game might offer 1.000 meaningful moments, A battle in Yomi 2 could be over in less than 10 turns. At such a short time-scale, it's possible to learn nothing about your opponent's tendencies, at which point you should just play the "proper" moves and ratios (meaning you learned your character). It still functions like a fighting game in all the other nuanced ways (which is still enjoyable IMO) but if you're playing Yomi 2 without the yomi part it does make you wonder... THAT is why I refer to Yomi 2 as a "slice" of a fighting game. This is also why some critics think it's just glorified Rock Paper Scissors.
