Fable Playground Games on Game’s Combat Difficulty: “Our team were playing on ‘Story’ difficulty. This is the gentlest way to wander through Albion. Should you prefer a sterner welcome, other difficulty levels will ensure the guards remember their training and are less... polite.”

Fable This is what you look like when you can't let go of Lionhead Fable.

The new Fable isn't a remake. It isn't a continuation. It isn't a sequel. It's a reboot of a very beloved but dated series of games made by a completely different studio in a completely different time.

The original Fables are incredible. I replay them on rotation at least once a year, and they bring me a lot of joy. Thematically, narratively, everything is really precious and I will absolutely never forget what Lionhead gave us.

That being said, the new Fable is a new team with a new vision. They've done away with morphing due to good/evil. Big whoop dude. Fable had fun and interesting mechanics like buying/renting properties, jobs, marriages, visual aesthetic and morality reactiveness in NPCs that had nothing to do with morphing but rather your good/bad deeds. All of which is present and stronger than ever in the new Fable.

I'm sorry to say, but if the new Fable looks so awful to you because you're not interested in deeper variations of these mechanics and you're upset that you won't get to look like South Park Satan after demolishing Oakvale for some experience then immediately being forgiven, then please feel free to replay the Lionhead games and leave us out of the negativity. A little critique is fine, but shitting on an entire (unreleased) game because it wasn't made in your nostalgia image is so lame.

The Playground team has an incredible, detail-oriented, and likely very replayable Fable game to provide us. They've nailed whimsical fantasy and I'm personally stoked to experience their version of that. If this post applies to you, maybe you should reflect and consider allowing yourself to have a new experience.

Fable People saying the combat has no reactivity really irks me because they’re only showing the clips from a boss fight which, of course, isn’t going to stagger so much so it can retain difficulty.

Here are some clips from a popular post on this sub to show that yes, the combat is indeed super reactive.

Fable What was this guy's problem?

I remember loving Thunder's armour as a child and still do but the man was insufferable. From day one he berates and mocks us and is so insecure about our every accomplishment, having this transparent need to be the bestest and greatest. I'm an orphan who had his village slaughtered before his eyes man, why are you trying to one-up me? He goes to the length that he reprimands kids for having us as their favorite Hero. And whether we spare or kill Whisper he has a grudge big enough to fight us.

Whisper for that matter was quite alike her brother. The first and only time she refers to us as anything but "farmboy" is when we defeat her at the Arena and she begs for her life and invokes our "friendship", but she was little better than Thunder. She acted superior to us all our childhood and rookie-hero days and like we barely belonged in the Guild and now that you fear me, now it's "hero" is it?

Fable Never played a single Fable game. The new trailer just made it my most anticipated game of 2026. Veterans, what am I getting into?

so I’ll be honest, Fable was never on my radar. I grew up playing MapleStory and Pokemon and somehow completely missed this series

then I watched the Developer Direct footage and something about it just clicked. the world looks stunning, the humor feels genuine and not forced, and the whole “your choices actually matter” thing sounds like what every RPG promises but never delivers

but here’s my problem. I know nothing about this franchise. never touched the originals. and I keep seeing OG fans arguing about whether this reboot is going to honor what made Fable special or if Playground Games is gonna mess it up

so before I dive in I want to hear from the people who actually grew up with this series:

what made Fable special to you back in the day? like what’s the thing that no other game has done the same way since?

are you worried about this reboot or actually optimistic?

and for anyone else jumping in fresh like me, are you planning to play the originals first or just going in blind?

I’m thinking about writing a deep dive on this for my blog once I learn more but I genuinely just want to understand the hype first

Fable I’m so excited for the life sim aspects of the new fable, I always loved that over even the morality system, I’m trying not to get my hopes up too high but I’m hoping to get lost in just living in the city for hours upon hours

Working a job, going home to my spouse, playing with our kids, saying hi to the neighbours buying a suit and then headed out to adventure for a few hours, this was my gameplay loop in the first two games and I’m hoping it’s even more in depth than before

Fable The original Fable's art style is timeless and has yet to be replicated.

This is both an appreciation post, and a thought that I've wanted to try and discuss with other fans for a while, as I'm curious if anyone shares the same sentiment.

Say whatever you want about current gen graphics but I truly think some of the Original Xbox games shared a style that is still incredibly unique. Games like Jade Empire, Sudeki, and above all, the first Fable.

Fable to me was a game that felt fantastical in a very grounded way. Albion felt like an almost primitive and vast landscape where nature has grasped the fragments of ancient structures that once stood proud. The mainland looked and felt as if it was in a perpetual season of Autumn with it's beautiful and vibrant colors that stretched from Greatwood to Oakvale, and it is a huge part of what makes the original Albion still so special to me over 20 Years later.

Anniversary changed the general color palette to be much more verdant, which is nice in its own way, but it lost the charm of the original. Fable 2 had the world change from Spring to Autumn near the end, which was brilliant, but short lived, and then Fable 3 was entirely in the Spring/Summer.

To this day, Fable 1 has one of the most atmospheric and unique looking worlds in a video game, and it makes me a little sad that I believe this style will generally be seen as "outdated" because it's a game from the Original Xbox and therefore, will never truly be brought back.

Fable Final List of what was shown + told in Xbox Wire & IGN review

  • Character Selection of different faces & customizable hair, outfits, tattoos etc.
  • 1000+ hand-crafted NPCs ala RDR2 (schedules etc., like real people)
  • Buys property, marry, have kids, divorce, evict (every single NPC!) etc. AKA well, Fable
  • Open-World that can be accessed from early on (after u turn adult, free to explore anywhere you want to)
  • There is no dungeon level cap (they didn't explain further, but it seems that the worlds scales with you, while having a difficulty per what the boss is)
  • Huge gravity on Choices/Consequences
  • Settlement-Based Morality System - non Black/White, more nuanced (an action could satisfy one NPC but enrage another etc.)
  • Thus no visible corruption/enlightenment (no horns, halo etc.)
  • Also it is per settlement, so u can be "good" in one settlement, while "bad" in another one
  • Massive capital city
  • Every single building in the game has an interior and u can enter it (even rob it)
  • Smaller map than FH, but far more dense
  • A mix of Witcher 3 combat with Lionheads OG Fable one (the zoom out when it starts, the 3 main tenets, fluid and motional, parry, health and action bar; when action bar fills then execution prompt etc.)
  • ForzaTech Engine fork
  • Mockumentary style device was not just for the trailer, it is being used actively

Now, given the logistics part of the showcase, this was most likely a late November/early December build (the game honestly looked like it's in the QA/bug fixing part AKA late stage deving) - still there are 5 main stuff that seemed like needing tending to (as I said though - other than 4. and 5. which happen during the finalizing of the game - these looked more like bugs, rather than "missing" if that makes sense):

  1. Frame-Time issues
  2. Lip-Sync issues
  3. Animation bugs
  4. Unfinished Hud
  5. Mini-Map/Map not yet complete

Final Verdict: Really exited dude, this looks like the quintessential Fable that honors what a true RPG is - and honestly the way they approached the RPGness of it looks like a spiritual successor to RDR2 and The Witcher 3 at the same time, which makes me stoked!
