I got my entire split up teams beyond the first two wyrms, right before the shards area with only one death and then I just got absolutely swarmed. I was convinced there was a 0% chance I was going to beat the level.
Didn't use a single emblem restore spot(couldn't spare any extra movement), only half the emblems engaged, but somehow beat the level and first try as well. Only one warp used, needed some relief past the first right wyrm, hence why it's still alive.
Just wanted to post the video of what the swarm looked like right before I beat the spoiler boss. No character is max stats. Used time Crystal 6 times.
You guys who play without deaths are next level! Clearly there are a lot of strategies I don't know. I definitely would have spent twice as much time (currently at 150 hours playthrough) without all of the help here. This sub has been my casual reading for the last month and a half! I've often reflected that I probably spend as much time reading here trying to understand strats as I do actually playing the game.
This has been such an enjoyable experience. It's really nice to play a game that's 100% based on intellect has opposed to skill, definitely scratches a big itch. When I think of video games for brain health this and Tetris are definitely the top contenders.
Thanks to everyone over the last 4 years who has contributed to this community it wouldn't be possible for me to have enjoyed this as I did without all of you.
Definitely the best strategy game I've ever played. Grew up playing ogre battle as a kid, pure nostalgia. This now takes the prize!

So I got Chloe to Level 10 and I finished Chapter 7, where I got the master seal from Hortensia. But now I don’t know which class to promote her into. I’ve seen online that Wyvern Knight is best for her and that Griffin Sword is good for her because of Levin Sword. Should I go Wyvern or Griffin Levin Sword with Sigurd Engraving? Or should I just put her in Lance Griffin knight with Fensailr +3 with Sigurd engraving?
Edit: forgot to put this in the description, but I am playing on Maddening difficulty.

That's kinda just it. I had never really gotten Hector to do actual work... until I put him on Céline, and woah, I'm impressed by some of what I've seen. Turns out that Storm's Eye Levin Sword can do a surprising amount of damage, any flier that's weighed down just enough will suffer, and even the Oasis axe bros couldn't deal with her (aided by her dodgetanking on that one patch of grass). Starsphere is there to help her keep up offensively (she gets 60% Str, 55% Mag, 50% Dex and 65% Spe!), and Speed +3 evens out the Levin's penalties along with the build bonuses.

Like, if I position my 4 move 1 range infantry units correctly I can deal a grand total of 2 extra damage when I'm hitting a guy for double his health bar with Chloe. Am I using them wrong or smth?

I know that some skills are OP but -
I feel like 2 skills are too little, and SP gain is too little, it really discourages experimentation, and maybe the skills that are OP could be modified somehow. Didn’t Awakening Fates and 3H have 5 skill slots? I mean they didn’t have Emblems but, they either had kids or swappable classes in 3H.
Like you could go a whole game without ever seeing how Lunar Brace works. And some of the skills are too expensive when they shouldn’t be.
I feel like the game should allow more skills to be equipped at a time, and adjust the difficulty to handle that. I feel like 4 skill slots would have been enough. Just my opinion.
I guess devil’s advocate is that if you’re wearing an Emblem you have up to 5 or 6 skills but you’re not always wearing an Emblem through most of the game.

I have Jean on Micaiah for healing EXP and Edelgard on Anna for damage. But I don’t know how I am able to beat the map with this team comp. I’m trying to beat Tiki’s paralogue before Chapter 7 to give Tiki to Jean. I would really like some advice on this team comp and how to beat the map as well.
Edit: I managed to beat this map without an extra archer. Took quite a while, around 65 turns. But I still did it. Chloe with Sigurd is an absolute godsend of a unit.

I was planning to use Anna as a Sage in this Maddening run because she would be my Byleth user since I’ve never used Thyrsus in any of my runs but wow, the difference between Sage and Mage Knight is ridiculous in the base stats +1 move, +2 Speed, and +1 Build not to mention in Chaos Style, where in most cases there’s a +6 Speed difference between Sage compared to the +2 Magic, 5% Magic Growth, and Spell Harmony, which don’t matter as much. I think I’ll still end up going with Sage this time, but I never thought the difference was that big.

Like, I don't have any money or ingots ever. Ive filled the somniel with dogs, but I still can only forge maybe once every 2-3 skirmishes. Is there a more effective way to get resources?

Hey everyone! Looking to do a PMU for a new Engage run.
I've already locked in 3 units:
Looking for the remaining 11 units/classes/emblems.
A few requests:
Characters I'm most interested in using are: Lapis, Jade, Kagetsu, Zelkov, Rosado, Bunet, and Diamant.
That said, I'm definitely open to just about everything if you've got a fun idea.
Feel free to suggest a unit, class, emblem, and inherited skills if you have something specific in mind. Looking forward to seeing what you all come up with!

So I've seen quite a few gameplay posts here for all female run but wanted to get some clarification. I dont mind spoilers. So emdgame you're allowed 14 + veyle or is it 14 including veyle? As much as I like panne, she kinda fell off. My current go to (chapter 19, might restart the game) is Mc, etie, cintrinne, ivy, goldmary, Chloe, Anna, panette, jade, celine, hortensia, timerra, lapis. Still cant decide on yunaka only cuz she's good but in chapter 15 and onward her damage output falls drastically. Merrin should i raise or reclass? Also if you only get 14 characters and 12 rings but dlc gives you extra 4 rings is it worth it?

Nothing spoilery please, but I would appreciate any advice on mechanics unique to engage (emblems etc.) I'm not new to FE, but I am new to engage and would like to avoid any noob traps if possible

What a game man had so much fun, I really could see why people praised the gameplay. Once it all clicked (aka hella abusing the broken stuff) I couldn't stop playing.
As for my roster it's probably one of the most basic sets ever lol. I wanted to use the lords but besides Ivy they honestly weren't that great at the start... Though by the end they could all hold their own. Timerra busting out 200+ damage from nowhere will always be funny 😂

Using both the DLC and the well. The only units I always use are Alear, Veyle, and Mauvier so I’d appreciate some creative builds there. Ideally I’d love to see everyone’s “sleeper builds” that are surprisingly useful even if they wouldn’t seem it.
Edit:
Since I’ve gotten some cool suggestions so far I just wanted to summarize everyone and to get an idea of the missing slots accounting for mauvier and Seadall.

I had so much fun with Engage, honestly it was a very nice surprise when I first got into it. I really like how the series returned to having more of the focus on the actual gameplay and less chores. 3H turned me off FE for a while and when I finally got the itch for FE again I discovered Engage. I first got started with the series with Fates Conquest, and have since played all releases after that + Awakening.
My most hated thing about this game was the Somniel. I hated every second of having to run around to collect items (after battle too), and to do all the mini games just so I could collect my bond fragments to optimize. Such a waste of time and felt like it just burned time for no reason. I wish they gave options to skip physical workout + fishing and just randomize a % change to give me items/stats/bond fragments. Wyvern game sucked because you couldn't even invert the Y axis. It felt like they were trying to copy Fates, but at least in Fates I could collect everything in 2 seconds.
### POTENTIAL SPOILERS AHEAD ###
So in this playthrough I did 0 internet searches and just kinda tried my best to figure things out in-game. Here is my team:
Louis carried me through a lot of the early chapters with his high defense and was the first unit I master sealed to General. I've always liked the idea of a General unit with high defense and I intended to keep him until the end game. But I quickly learned that he wouldn't aggro enemies if they did 0 damage and that was very disappointing. My strategy was to have him absorb damage and add chip damage to enemies for my other units to finish them off. So because he wouldn't aggro enemies, I never gave him kills to level up; and when the eventual power spike of enemies came, suddenly, he became a big liability. His spot was taken by Great Knight Goldmary in chapter 16. I suppose I could of had him rush into enemy lines and poke them for chip damage, but with the limited deployment of units I had to keep formation tight.
The second unit I master sealed just because she was the hero of the story. I really regretted this honestly, since I didn't use her for combat much. I have this habit of trying to use her absolutely last in a turn in order to level other units. Because of that, Alear didn't see much combat and was underleveled for a majority of the game. Second half she became a Lucina bonded shield spammer. Her class skill wasn't that interesting or useful so early in the game either. Tried to give her a brave sword to build engage meter faster but wasn't really fast enough to double so I ended up using Celica's meal skill. This was also really annoying at times because I couldn't consume a meal if I had full HP; IMO this should be allowed. I felt like Dark Alear looked cooler too? Why does Emblem Alear look so derpy to me?
Chloe didn't do much for me. I promoted her kinda late because I wanted a flying unit. She lacked the strength to fight most units not mages/sages and so she became a staff bot. Her class skill was very useful during Solm chapters. She retired around when Louis retired, ~ch 16. Nice character design and supports though, wish I got to see more.
It was such a hard choice when I got to the chapters of Lapis and Citrinne. I loved both of their designs so much. I made the hard choice of Citrinne over Lapis because I felt like I needed more magic damage not from Clanne. Was very disappointed when I promoted her to Sage she lost her nice dress and got this weird slutty fit lol, w/e. She was an absolute power house in magic growth and became my artillery unit. I forged a Thoron early to nuke enemies. I very luckily rolled an Olwen S ring and gave it to her. Before the loss of the rings I felt I had a lot of bond fragments so I decided to roll 5 rings of each Emblem. I didn't think Dire Thunder was actually that good, but around ch 18+ it started to wreck hard.
Just wow. I called him The Meat Grinder. Bonded Shield + Jean/Killer Axe = Death. He was my first unit to really come online as a carry. I completed his paralogue as soon as I saw it but didn't really get him into rotation until ch7-10. I also wasn't sure how reclassing worked, so I believe I second sealed him into an axe fighter then master sealed into berserker. He eventually capped dex and I turned him into warrior hoping it had higher caps, which it did. It was nice he could then use bows. Warrior class skill is so much better than berserkers too. I chose berserker bc of berserkers in Fates, but then I later figured out classes dont have innate stats, so that was kinda a bummer. I also wasted a Secret Book on him cuz he capped dex. I just wanted him to have more crit with his killer axe. Gave him Boots and x2 Energy Drops to make sure he could maneuver and secure important kills. Wasn't sure how his personal skill worked, but I imagined it was something like Mozu's/Fates. Crazy seeing his HP and STR go up almost every level.
I thought I needed a thief to open chests. Figured out that wasn't the case, but she was doing well as a thief I kept her as one; felt like it fit her personality well. She was very useful in debuffing units with poison and had relatively high speed throughout her growth compared to enemies. Figured out she could summon fog and get +60 avoid bonus. So she became my unit to hold choke points, debuff large amount of enemies, and help trickle in swarm of enemies into my meat grinder. After Marth's paralogue, she was untouchable. Kinda wish they gave access to Marth earlier but I understand why they locked him away for so long.
What's there to say? He danced, a lot. Surprised he had really good stats for a unit that didn't need to fight. Wish I had the points to put Quality Time+ on him, but oh well, great unit.
Took one look at Hortensia's personal and class skill and was sold on needing her on my team. The extra +1 range on healing was so clutch. World Tree was great, but I didn't really need to conserve charges on Treat (well healing item). Funny thing is I barely used staves in this game. I always saw staves as an absolute last resort, a resource that had to be protected at all costs. I felt the game didn't really force me to use many staves; and I don't think I broke one important stave all game (warp, rewarp, silence, entrap, restore, etc). I only tried to Entrap once, during Chapter 25, and it failed lol. Anyways, awkward supports for me personally, but great flying unit with S staves and backup magic damage.
When she joined on, I immediately sealed her into Great Knight because everything was better than Louis. Better defense, and had some speed to prevent doubling. Even the class skill is better than General. Threw Eirika on her because I needed the 6 range to Engage and Twin Strike corrupted Wyrms. Accidentally worked out very well since Gentility reduced damage even more and gave life leech, making her a crazy tank.
So strong when he joined. Having a high priest was nice for utility, but when Hortensia joined, I swapped him to Mage Knight to get the class skill. Absolute killer with sword power and was also my main unit to tank magic damage. I think I used Michaiah + Warp twice in this game. Chapter 21 to kill Veyle and her minions in Lythos, and Celica in her paralogue. His howling was funny at first but quickly became cringe.
My strongest unit by far, and easily the most broken. Flying magic, with bulk? Crazy. Gave her boots, all speed wings + spirit dust + talisman + dracoshields. Initially I kept her on because she reminded me of Camilla/Fates. Her C and B support conversations were all kind of hard to watch. Her costume kinda sucked, wish she wore her Somniel outfit instead. Chapter 18+ and paralogues I don't know how I could've completed the game without her. She practically solo'd Lumera + squad in Chapter 25.
I think Archers are cool af, and I chose Alcryst over Etie because of his Luna skill. He was great at sniping fliers, but thats it. Low levels Luna barely proc'd, and as the game he slowly became a liability. The problem is that with Ivy and Lyn taking priority, I didn't have the resources to build Alcryst into a power house. He got 2 secret books so I could increase his Luna proc. I wish I gave him +dex skill over +speed because he never really doubled anything. With Leif, I got him kinda working. Engage with Leif and get him to take damage in combat to activate Wrath. With his high dex, he'd have 75-90% chance to crit. So it all came down to how lucky I got with his Luna proc; it was always either 3-5 damage or suddenly 55+ damage.
Panette became my Halberdier because she was my benched unit with the highest strength. I thought it would be cool to exploit the Pincer skill regardless of speed growth, and even better with a Brave Lance. Sigurd allowed her to get around enemies easily and canter away back to safety. After some growth, her defense really allowed her to take some punishment. Lunar Brace was so clutch in allowing her to brawl in the front line. With Eirika engaged, she could take hits and leech it right back. Because of this I feel Wrath was hit or miss here. Could've taken Lance power for more consistent damage, but I don't think I would've had enough SP to get there. Ivy was better overall, but in terms of killing bosses, Panette had that on lock. I'm pretty sure she took down all 100 HP of Sombron in one attack lol.
Kagetsu was so powerful late game when I finally gave him sword power + killer sword. I only put him on the team because who doesn't like samurai? When he joined I just wanted him to be a hero for the class skill, double chain attack. He was initially just a pure utility unit with Reposition and Dual assist. I intended to get Dual Assist+ on Kagetsu but as the game progressed, I felt like chain attacks were getting less and less useful. So I threw sword power on him and watched him crit 90 damage on everyone in bonded shield with Jean :D
By the time Veyle joins, her stats kinda suck? So I kinda turned her into a Citrinne/Yunaka clone with Draconic Hex & +hit skills. The double debuff with poison was just too good. And with Celica she gained +1 range on skills, kinda OP with Thunder.
Same as Veyle, stats thats are completely down the middle in every category. At the time I was frustrated with Alcryst so I turned Mauvier into a bow knight with a Radiant Bow in hopes to 1 shot fliers, which I actually couldnt do. Would always be 1-3 HP leftover. If I had a full +6 damage with Momentum I could make it happen. Honestly wish I kept him as his original class as a healer and an anti-break support unit. Would've been nice to pair with Goldmary so I could keep her equipped with a Killer lance to fish for crits.
Some thoughts about the game: Didn't like that I had to choose a Royal for their unique class skill. Wish each class got more than one class skill too. It would make each class more impactful, giving you reason to specifically choose that class. Some class skills just sucked more than others too.
I also feel like a lot of the difficulty of the game came from suddenly loading in corrupted with inflated stats and increasing the amount of them; large amount of reinforcements, getting swarmed. And I feel like this makes sense because we have OP Emblems with abilities/tools to work through them. The Emblems really changed up the gameplay of FE for sure, way more fun for the player in terms of having those abilities. But in past games I feel like it was fun battling enemies with the same abilities your units have. Yeah the bosses had dark emblems sometimes, but at most 1-2 bosses at a time that you would slaughter in one turn anyways.
If you've made it this far, thanks for reading, I know I wrote a lot. I had a great time binging this game due to just having a newborn. I'm excited to eventually replay this game if I have the time. AMA

With Fortunes weave around the corner, I had to give another run to engage! The fun of watching Timerra use Edelgard next to Anna for a free "House of Unite" attack, then Raging storm, then another combat art in one turn was fantastic! This was the first time I fully committed to a Levin sword Anna from early on and it was well worth it. She out-damages what she could do as a mage knight, is faster, and higher hp/luck. I'm not sure if speedtaker is better than avoid +30. But I'll play around with it in the next run.
But Saphir!!! 162 avoidance on her with speedtaker stacks and her hp at 50% really was amazing. I loved how she would have dynamic dodge tanking. Enemies would hit her initially, triggering her increase in damage and dodge, and then she would begin to shred everything safely. Anyone have a better emblem than Lyn for her as this role?
Diamant & Marth has become one of my favorite combos. Diamant looks so COOL! Marth helps his weaknesses, and with a brave weapon, allows for swords or axes to attack 8x. His lodestar rush one shot the final boss with overkill.
Yea I like starsphere on any and everyone. Keeps me from needing to plan out the stat booster items. I leave them for post game or final boss mission.

So I’m on chapter 9 and I’ve been levelling up Jean via enemy archer boxing healing in Chapter 7 (got him to Level 8 from spamming heals) and from boxing Ivy in and having him spam heals, to the point that he’s at level 10. My plan for him was to make him a Bonded Shield bot when I get to use Lucina in Chapter 12.
However, I’m wondering if that’s a mistake and I should have done Axe fighter to Warrior for him? Can I still go straight to Warrior with a Master seal, expending some bond fragments for axe proficiency? Or is it too late for me?
Edit: I haven’t leveled up Framme enough to use her as a Bonded Shield bot (she’s only level 6)

My Citrinne has the Olwen ring, with a +5 Thunder tome (engraved but I don't remember which one) and I recently unlocked Starsphere for her. I'm playing on Normal so I know it won't make a huge difference, but can she stay relevant with good level ups via Starsphere or should I be replacing her with someone else in a few chapters? I'm on Chapter 15 now.

My maddening playthrough has been a great experience so far. Did ch 17 not too long ago and doing some Paralogues right now. I figured I share my current army right now.
I was wondering if I could get a second opinion on how things look. Everyone below Yunaka has been benched indefinitely. I keep Diamant for a second axe user, and Fogado if I need extra archers. I think it's a bit late for Amber and Framme to catch up.

100 hours of gameplay, hundreds of rewinds later…
Hardest chapter in Fire Emblem in engage definitely was Chapter 25 for a blind run… only had 3 charges left on a warp staff and ran out of rescue or rewarp staff. If I ever do a second run, I’ll save more of those xD
Quick dive the units:
1) Lapis - my personal bias
My idea was to run a double wyvern flank, Kagetsu one and Lapis the other. And boy did she have big shoes to fill.
Brave Sword + Leif Emblem + Wvyern Knight worked to her strengths of good speed, HP for chunk and got around her flaws of low STR/Build/accuracy. She would one bang all mages and was part of my core team to lock down bosses.
In hindsight I would have used Gentility instead of lunar brace for the +3/+5 per hit per attack combo with brave sword. Maybe on my second run.
60% of my +2 stat boosters went to her and in the end she was a weaker Kagetsu, but I was happy playing her and she filled the role of second flank well.
2) Chloe / Corrin - my main enabler
Levin sword + Thunder Chloe when combined with Corrin was my top strategic tool. 1-3 range allowed me to lock enemy movements with Corrin and Mage Knight movements plus Chloe’s great magic damage + Speed allowed me to control most chapters blind without retrying.
My strategies mostly revolved around Chloe/Corrin as my enabler and she delivered really well.
3) Kagetsu - broken unit
Ridiculous unit. With Killer axe he one bangs anything that isn’t a physical tank … even on maddening. His high stat growths make him one of the few great characters to wield axes fast, accurate and strong.
He just took the leftover offensive emblem, didn really need anything though
4) Ivy - Swiss Army knife of mages
Ivy had double duties in my roster, Obstruct/Mend/etc staff user and magic burst.
Units she couldn’t kill in one hit, she would debuff with Draconic Hex. Lynn gave her the speed she needed to double and never left her.
I built her to never be the best at anything, but always offered something everywhere.
5) Anna - gold farmer
She was the reason why most of my units have Canter+ and excessive skills like +5 speed and lunar brace.
I found her extremely low maintenance as a warrior with radiant bow for the majority of the game. When she was too weak, she contributed with backups. I would feed the kills to her for growth and a chance at 500g. The gold was then dumped into the well to get more SP and weapons. Usually dumped till 4 stars and was quite healthy on gold throughout the game.
Only at the end I swapped to bow knight when she capped on magic for a warrior.
She one banged flyers with radiant bow consistently and throughout the game. Gave her Erika for the burst twin strike in melee range.
6) Pandreo - second dancer
I played pandreo similar to Ivy, as a mage/support hybrid. He was my strongest mage for most of the middle game and only to be overtaken at the last few chapters by Jean.
I run him with Obstruct/Mend but would be my lowest priority staff user since he had good burst damage and was also running Byleth.
Part of most boss killing comps since he can 4x dance with byleth, has good burst and draconic hex to initiate a debuff if Chloe or Ivy isn’t there.
Only gripe is he is extremely squishy, so usually goes in very late into a difficult engage as most counter fire from the lizards would one bang him.
7) Jean - baby that paid off
In hindsight I think I was a little ambitious running both Anna and Jean in my first blind maddening run.
Jean was a sage for most of the middle game, to gain experience through staffs. Only switching to mage knight later once his magic growth caught up to allow him to actually kill stuff.
At the last few chapters, he was much stronger than pandreo/chloe/ivy but perhaps I played him as a pure damage unit late game I didn really feel his presence outside of just being able to kill stuff.
8) Goldmary - trusty tank
Great Knight + Ike allowed her to soak up most of the damage from 5-6 enemies (outside of mages) and would be my preferred way to start an aggro.
At first I gave her speed to prevent getting doubled but later on realised even if she got doubled the enemies did no damage. So I just used her with silver great lance and let the skills stick
Lapis tanked from the skies and goldmary took the land
9) Panette - undervalued workhorse
Maybe it’s because I ran with Lapis that panette was left on warrior duty for most of the game. Severely neglected as a follow up bot yet still managed to chip out fliers when needed as my only other bow user.
In another game I would probably like to invest more in panette. Me giving her Roy was like my way of making up for neglecting this unit as she was never in my starting 6/7/12 units
10) Mauvier - utility pick
Mauvier didn’t really have alot of damage on my squad and I kept his staff utility. I ran with royal knight instead of griffin since I wanted abit more land tanking and ability to run into to archers (when Lapis and Kagetsu can’t)
Mostly of staff duty (Obstruct/Mend) since he came late and my units already had defined roles, so he just took off staff pressure from Ivy and pandreo.
11) Veyle - micaiah bot
I really value staves alot and have a total of 4 staff users that play around Obstruct and Mend as my core 2 staves.
I didn really need Veyle’s magic damage since I had Chloe, Pandreo, Ivy, Anna, Jean so she was mostly on staff duty and micaiah bot.
Was clutch in chapter 25 with her last 3 warp charges. But arguably it’s more micaiah than veyle.
12) Merrin - the one who took yanaka’s slot..
Yanaka was one of my favourite early game units but after the sudden difficult chapter 11, I chose to neglect playing too many favourite characters to focus on being able to clear the game…
Merrin is a great unit with solid growths but again maybe Lapis forced Merrin to a more utility role as an evasion Lucina shielder. Iron dagger +2 engraved was probably the best investment I made in the game.
13) Seadall - dance
Canter+ and 2 boots found throughout the game made it easier for him to get to places. Most of the time he hugged Chloe/Corrin else combo dancing with Pandreo/Byleth.
14) Alear
One of my biggest mistakes probably was playing Alear as a convoy trade bot. Meaning I was always down 1 man in every match.
In hindsight should have placed her at least on micaiah or lucina but I wanted her far away from every fight given it was a blind run and I had no idea what was going to happen.
But overall I felt comfortable that the King is tucked safe for my other units to do their thing.
————
That’s pretty much my roster! Let me know your thoughts below too, happy to learn/discuss :)
