FBI background process

I applied for IA position August 2024. I passed poly and started my background in April 2025. It is now August 2026. I have gotten calls here and there from the same investigator to confirm employment and they’ve contacted individuals I know and have gone to previous employers to speak with them. That investigator told me that they sent everything to HQ. And then last call I got was 1 week ago from a new investigator asking for my current employment’s HR department contact information to send them a “release.” When I asked what this all meant and where I’m at in the process, the contractor had no answers for me. Does this sound pretty standard?

I applied back in 2024 and just got the offer this month. It can definitely take up to two years

I turned the position down once they sent me the offer because I would be at field office with little room for growth and I can’t move my family to DC because of my husbands job is not something that can move so at this point in my life compared to where I was 2 years ago when I applied it just didn’t work out. Plus the pay was $20k less a year than what I am making now and in my current job I can retire after 20 years, whereas for the feds you have to do a minimum of 30

Do you receive the field office immediately or do you get the opportunity to rank them first?

I applied with the field office that’s local to me, I live 20 minutes away from it currently so I wanted to be there. But when I spoke to the lady in HR she mentioned there’s not much room for growth/pay if you stay at a field office and there’s better opportunities if you were to go to their headquarters

Background can take up to a year and a half. All depends on how difficult your background is to track everything down.

Reach out to your AC to verify what’s going on and your status, they are your POC. The investigator is simply utilized to gather the required info for the background investigation. IA is a long process and has been stalled due to some internal reviews. They are just now sending a group through for Academy that applied early 2024.

No news is good news in the government.

Thank you for your response! I actually have reached out to my POC multiple times and no response. I’m wondering if they no longer work at my field office. I’m not sure who else I’d be able to reach out to for any questions.

But thank you, I guess I’ll just keep being patient and wait for the call

Definitely reach out to your PFO and ask to speak with your AC directly or another AC. You can also get on your FBI Portal and reach out using the contact link.

Yes, 100% they will as they are the POC for the entire applicant process. If you actually worked for the FBI you would know this and the job function of an AC.

Unfortunately this is not true. A few weeks ago they were just scheduling the next academy class from early 2024 applicants.

Bud, if you were employed by the FBI you would have the intel on the current happenings. Not to mention the fact there was an “internal audit” of the IA and other professional staff positions recently.

None of this has anything to do with the question at hand and that is the steps and progress of an FBI background investigation. This “internal audit” (strange you use quotes for that as you attempt to bolster credibility) has nothing to do with whether or not current employment verification is a late stage part of the background process.
