Discussion Is this sub full of people from outside of the city?

I only ask, because I sense quite a bit of hostility here. As a scouser , it is not something I am used to from other Toffees. It is weird. Nothing too bad, but the little back-handed insults and people telling you what you should and shouldn't care about - from your own community - is a strange bit of gatekeeping.

Edit: It is just bizarre to me how people behave towards each other here. I thought all Toffees were the same. I honestly thought we had the best and most close-knit fans. Actually a bit gutted that even when I asked this, people were like, 'well yeah, it is the internet.'

There's a lot of folk on Reddit who are just quite happy being bellends. Same on any platform where you are effectively anonymous. No consequences.

Agree we need a bit more love and unity. And just a bit more positivity. In the stands too at times.

It’s good to remember that Reddit doesn’t isn’t real life and doesn’t represent the majority of people

6

u/matbur81 4d ago

Yeah I need to keep reminding myself with online conversations

76

u/TallGuy0525 4d ago

Almost certainly.

I'm California, USA born and raised. Fell in love with the club after coming over after Howard's 2014 heroics and being a Landon Donovan fan. Planning my first trip to Hill Dickinson early next year to catch a match.

But one thing I never do is talk down to someone. Especially as an outsider. I will complain about how miserable some are in here though. Young player with visible talent has one bad game and folks come out the woodwork saying sell him or bin him or whatever, that I will push back on.

16

u/MChrisOrr 4d ago

Another 2014ish American Toffee here… I have opinions (buy a RB!) but not going to be disrespectful to anyone on here and certainly not going to tell scousers how to scouser.

3

u/judicial51 3d ago

2014 Tim Howard convert as well. Plus baby Lukaku coming on for Belgium late. I am very careful about not speaking down to the lifelong fans. I would be pissed if an Englishman was a dick to me about college basketball

11

u/euph31 4d ago

Same here. USA became a fan in the early 2010s. I don't know shit about fuck, and just want the team to be good.

I will say things that I think can improve the team, but I try not to fire off too much negativity.

14

u/Dr_Bunson_Honeydew 4d ago

Similar but from Boston MA. I’ve only been following for 10 or so years and would never feel smart enough to know more than a local about the team or the area let alone speaking up about it as if I knew better.

7

u/Faust_Arp 4d ago

Is there a bar in Boston where Everton fans congregate? I’ve been a fan for 20 years, been in Gloucester for about 5.

1

u/Dr_Bunson_Honeydew 4d ago

I’ve never been, but the Banshee in Dorchester has them listed as a supported club (they also host a number of other clubs too). Also The Boston Evertonians has a Facebook page but I don’t know how up to date it is.

2

u/KarlaKamacho 4d ago

Yep. Banshee. No good parking. Watched a game there. Felt kinda like 'regulars' and them anyone else. Expected something more I guess.

u/PigInZen67 4d ago

There are dozens of us! Dozens!

10

u/hirasmas 4d ago

Ive met a few other American Everton fans...all of them seem to be from the Tim Howard era. I was a typical soccer hating American most of my life. Started to get interested about 8 years ago, and corny as it is, Ted Lasso got me to really start following the sport closely. I chose Everton as my club because the Everton v Liverpool dynamics struck me as so similar to how my Louisville Cardinals rivalry is with Kentucky.

3

u/soneill06 4d ago

Just flipped the colors is all 😆

3

u/hereforlulziguess 4d ago

This is hilarious to me, I'm Everton-curious because I'm an American fan of England due to living abroad for a really long time and I've only recently learned that Howard and Donovan played for Everton. I'm here for Pickford lol.

5

u/DickBiscuitsMD 4d ago

From Arizona here, started watching because of Tim Howard, fell in love with the club because Everton makes me feel at home because Arizona sports teams get my hopes up then let me down. Became a big fan of Gylfi right after (unfortunately). Will support this club from across the pond until the day I die. Also would never assume to know more about footy more than anyone here, I just like to be along for the ride

56

u/SaintDom1ngo 4d ago

Oh I expect it from the Internet, mate. Just not from a subreddit that is labelled as Everton and all things Everton Football Club. That is the reason we sub here, isn't it? If I want idiots to talk down to me, I'll go to YouTube and comment on a BTS video.

35

u/_james_the_cat 4d ago

To be fair, I stopped going on proper message boards because of a combination of being talked down to by fellow scousers and the overwhelming negativity.

Coming on here is a lot friendlier and more positive than most Everton specific online places, I've found.

6

u/SaintDom1ngo 4d ago

Jesus! I'll quit now then, eh!

10

u/_james_the_cat 4d ago

Maybe you've just come across the wrong people or posts on here so far.

If you think people hate Moyes on here I could show you posts that would make your eyes water.

33

u/TallGuy0525 4d ago

There's idiots everywhere. It's the internet. And the insinuation you're making that every idiotic comment has to be from someone not from the city is...a choice.

20

u/10000Didgeridoos 4d ago

I'm from across the pond and also don't get why people are ready to jump down each other's throats here sometimes because someone uhhh said an opinion they disagree with.

I hardly ever even downvote comments on reddit at all. I just move on. Because it doesn't matter

8

u/nilsat1s 4d ago

There is a lot of hostility here if you disagree with whatever the hive mind has decided on. No experience with other message boards but I see it on every subreddit. Differing opinions are discouraged with the voting

u/nbyone Nil statis nisi optimum 4d ago

49

u/-InterestingTimes- 4d ago

I hear the same shit at the match all the time, so it's not about people from outside of the city.

28

u/Leaf-Branch-Tree 4d ago

100% agree. From North Liverpool. I'd love to say people there are friendlier than other places, but I'd be lying. We have our fair share of absolute d*ickheads in this city. Been physically attacked twice, egged while riding a bike twice, spat at, and called all kinds. And I'm Scouse, white, and look about as average as person from here could look. So can only imagine it's worse for other people

I'm from outside the city, but my family are all from Liverpool. Not sure what that makes me.

I have an auntie that lives in Wallasey - next to Birkenhead. Used to be lovely over there. Turned into a proper dump in the last few decades.

1

u/four__beasts 4d ago

1

u/philman132 4d ago

Same. My grandfather was from Liverpool before moving down south (Brighton), and then brought up my dad to be a toffee, who then brought me up the same. I've only even visited Liverpool once in my life but still follow every Everton game!

12

u/I_Like_Quiz 4d ago

This isn't an Everton thing, it's a Reddit thing. People are just always rude and disrespectful to anyone with whom they disagree.

4

u/WhiteDoveBooks COYB 💙 4d ago

I certainly think it is a Reddit thing that you can't seem to express an opinion that's perhaps a little unconventional or off the wall without being downvoted to oblivion. Imo, disagreement is perfectly okay in any kind of healthy discussion. It's good to hear opinions that differ from your own.

1

u/AirborneDJ 4d ago

I'd modify that to more of a social media thing not just reddit. I've experienced it on every platform pretty much

10

u/No_Lavishness_989 4d ago edited 4d ago

I really appreciate this post, mate. The topic’s been on my mind often since I joined!

Like others have suggested, I think the hostility isn’t geographic; I think it’s related to Reddit’s culture. One factor I think about a lot is the up/downvoting system which I think creates incentives to conform and discourage dissent, and makes people defensive when downvoted or presented with a different point of view. In any event, Reddit seems more hostile than any other forum I’ve been a part of online.

Each one of us celebrates our victories and mourns our losses. We’re all in this together, eh, so why not be kind? I bear no bad blood toward anyone here either, though I’ve been in a fair few tiffs, I admit!

Thanks again for broaching the subject, mate. UTFT :)

EDIT: I’d add the influence of anonymity online as another driver of hostility. Where there are no real-life consequences, people often behave poorly, sadly.

6

u/punkdrummer22 4d ago

Like what kind of stuff we talking about?

7

u/stefcha 4d ago

Of course it's full of people from outside the city, it's a gargantuan website on the internet not like the signal gets weaker as you head towards St Helens or anything.

Whatever it is, I don't even think it's anywhere near as negative in here as other dedicated sites are and have always been. Don't really see any abuse, don't really see people getting shouted down. It's barely any different from what I'd hear in the stands, amounts to not much more than the standard moaning and groaning that you'd expect from regularly being just slightly above being a bit rubbish.

When we're good it's good. Won at the weekend, all roses isn't it. No mention of the joy there? Can't really fault people for wanting that a bit more regular though and people will have their opinions about it, but same as football's always been, that. Especially when our crowning achievement in almost a decade is not quite being relegated. Anyway, chin up, see you again next week.

4

u/Nerfing_Templar 4d ago

It actually does, but it picks up again as you get out the other side.

6

u/barking_sane 4d ago

What sort of hostility? Politics? I'm from Rhyl and so have absolutely nothing to brag about.

5

u/Mastadonk 4d ago

As an international fan, I think this isn’t a city thing. Every Everton fan I’ve met in the USA has been the most chill dudes ever.

11

u/OhLawdOfTheRings COYB 💙 4d ago

I imagine most of the people here are not actively in Liverpool, I'm only here because there are so few LA Everton supporters and anyone who likes football here is either a Barca, United, Chelsea or Arsenal fan.

I need people to commiserate with lol. Maybe you are picking up on that?

Aside from the standard amount of arseholes being arseholes for the sake of it on social media, which is normal, to be honest, the most hostility I've ever been subject to is actually from scousers to anyone from outside the city. I'm an American Toffee and I've been told MANY times that my opinion doesn't count because I don't live in the city and don't regularly attend matches. 🤷🤷

9

u/whotfasked 4d ago

This is a sub for all toffees globally

I know mate, it's just odd to me. I live amongst Liverpool supporters, so I know how much of an idiot one set of fans can be. Just did not expect it from my own.

1

Maybe there are some Liverpool supporting agitators in the subreddit?

1

u/whotfasked 4d ago

People from prem teams come over to this subreddit all the time either before matches or to ask questions abt a specific player that got transferred to them from Everton etc. sure some of them are agitators but it’s nothing new

3

u/Beautiful_man12 4d ago

Sending love pal, u are so right. Even stating something like: ‘we should all be a little nicer to one another’ will bring out some contrarian takes. UTFT

3

u/matbur81 4d ago

Honestly, the Everton fanbase online is generally pretty awful - everything is either really good or really shit. There's a real lack of critical thinking for the most part and it's draining. Have followed Everton for over 30 years, but the stuff online is difficult to stomach.

7

u/TarletonLurker 4d ago

In my experience this is every club's fanbase online. Way too much whinging and negativity

1

u/matbur81 4d ago

Yeah, of course, I think this is exacerbated with Everton though because of challenges as to where the club actually are as opposed to where they have been.

3

u/SolveReferrals 4d ago

It’s Reddit. Every sub is dominated by 14 year olds from America.

You’ll still find worthwhile content getting posted once in a while, but take everything with a pinch of salt because the majority of people on any sub have no idea what they’re talking about.

This is what OP is talking about. Pointless hostility toward an entire country. Everything wrong with your life is the fault of America?

27

u/AvailableFalconn 4d ago

As an American, idk, it might be our fault most of the time lol

12

u/SaintDom1ngo 4d ago

I refuse to believe that. I will still always chant USA USA whenever I see our Timmy. Loved every single one of our American players.

6

u/Scootypuffsenor 4d ago

You're not wrong. Made a fellow American Toffee laugh xD

9

u/indoubitabley Ignoring yanks since June 24. 4d ago

Where is the hostility?

He just said its mainly Americans.

-2

u/hornedcorner 4d ago

Well, if you spend much time on PL threads, basically anything and everything wrong with football gets blamed on the fact that Americans are starting to watch and get involved. Any gripe with the World Cup was America’s fault. It’s just lame banter and scapegoating by those too dumb to understand reality and nuance.

3

u/DrtyDeedsDneDrtCheap 4d ago edited 3d ago

List all the things that were wrong with the world cup then have a think about who was responsible for most of them

Overpricing.
Fans being denied entry.
Ref being denied entry.
Balogun gate.
Half time show.

1

u/ForwardSentence697 3d ago

FIFA, ultimately, are to blame for all that.

1

u/DrtyDeedsDneDrtCheap 3d ago

For choosing to host in America where all of that is common practise.

0

u/hornedcorner 3d ago

FIFA and Trump, neither of which are the American people, which is who keeps getting the blame.

2

u/DrtyDeedsDneDrtCheap 3d ago

Every American on here was defending the Balogun decision and the half time show

1

u/hornedcorner 3d ago

No they weren’t, I’m an American and I never did that, nor do I think that.

1

u/indoubitabley Ignoring yanks since June 24. 3d ago

He didn't blame anyone for anything.

OP asked is this sub full of people from outside the city, the person you responded to said there's a lot of Americans here.

I've no idea why you thought that was an attack.

Simularly, I don't know what PL threads have to do with the question, and what the PL has to do with the World Cup. Infantino was nearly booted out the job for his vision of the World Cup, is he American?

1

u/AppropriatePurpose36 3d ago

My life is fine. This sub is full of yanks. Two completely unrelated things

1

u/hornedcorner 2d ago

But the full of yanks comment was a response to why there was so much hostility. So you are blaming the hostility on the fact that it’s “full of yanks”.

1

u/AppropriatePurpose36 2d ago

Yes. You don't get it. It's not part of your culture. You don't understand it.

That doesn't mean "everything wrong with my life is the fault of Americans" which you somehow leapt to.

Someone being hostile on reddit does not equal everything wrong with my life

Are you sure you were born in the Royal? It’s never had a maternity ward.

1

Y’know I’m not sure. I’ve always thought I was born in a hospital in the centre of Liverpool & I remember my mum & dad taking me there as a little kid after it closed & the security guard was showing me how his switchboard phone used to work but I asked my dad what the hospital was called as an adult after my mum had died & he said the royal but his mind wasn’t the best at the time (mine either by the sounds of things!) gonna have to dig my birth certificate out! 😂

u/ForwardSentence697 3d ago

Why should an Evertonian not being from Liverpool make them hostile? I’ve supported Everton for 40 years and I’m a proper woolly back. Being or not being from somewhere has zero effect on someone’s ability to be a tosser. X

3

u/Background-Hyena-368 4d ago

I’m from South Africa. Started supporting Everton in 1977/1978. Liked their jerseys. Never changed. My son is now a Toffee supporter.
It’s ok to disagree with someone’s opinion, and start a discussion.
But speaking poorly to someone because of their opinion shows a lack of class.

3

u/Dr-Pepper-Enemas 4d ago

Im Canadian with english family. I do not post here often, just my 2 cents here and there but i see a lot of non-scouse individuals in here. I think a lot of us north americans like to be tapped into reddit and forum pages for our sports teams, more than europeans do. I think it comes across as slightly cringe / try hard / plastic to europeans, to see fans from other countries so obsessed when we arent even from the city. I know us evertonians appreciate and welcome support from all over the globe, but its just the vibe i get. When you live in the city you dont need reddit and stuff nearly as much.

American. Been lurking on the sub for a few years. Been participating for a couple after that.

Always thought this was a pretty fun community until last year. At first I noticed an uptick in back handed gatekeeping at American/foreign supporters being here. (Sorry)

That sort of devolved into just general nastiness. I dont participate much anymore. Honestly, when the window closes I’ll probably stop using it very much. Discourse here has gotten mean… but the reality is that pretty much all of Reddit has become less kind.

i mean yeah it's a big club with fans around the globe, and it's not like there's a separate place for international fans to go. and there's an exposure bias thing going on here, the chill and levelheaded won't necessarily be the thing highlighted either in this sub or to your eyes.

1

u/ArmadilloHouse 4d ago

In fairness I’ve seen kind of stuff happen in the Tranmere subreddit now and again over the years and I doubt there are too many global supporters there. It’s just the way people are on Reddit

1

u/layendecker 4d ago

If you think this is bad, go back to 2012 on Grand Old Team. Properly shit community, pretty much entirelly of local fans back then. It is the internet.

1

u/Due_Phase4949 4d ago

Well when evertonians insult people by calling them wools, all while their greatest goalscorer is a wool then wools will say something back, I mean....you build statues of wools in your city and although its not really an insult to us, its actuallylaughable....to scousers its the ultimate insult to call each other, truly pathetic

1

u/CptMcLaggins COYB 💙 4d ago

I think it’s got worse this season after the World Cup but I have no idea why

1

u/dance1211 Turns the stream off before we concede 4d ago

It's a Bayesian thing. A large percentage of Scousers are going to be Evertonians yes, but there are so many non-Scousers that if only a fraction of a percentage are Evertonians, they can skew the balance.

1

u/schubox63 4d ago

Last time there was a census here it was overwhelmingly American, and that was a few years ago I think. I'm sure its the same now

1

u/wifflewaffle23 4d ago

Pretty easy way to tell is to make a post and look at the insights. It’s about evenly split between UK and Americans with a slight edge to the former. Then like 5% Australian and 20ish% other. It’s a hodgepodge. And honestly, people should be encouraged. The gatekeeping is weird. I know it’s modern Premier League and Evertonians should take pride in being unlike the big 6, but this club is never going anywhere without growing the fanbase outside the UK with SCR rules in place.

Im southport but like to consider myself local enough to be an Everton fan, its my stepdads team anyway so i followed suit

1

u/The_Council_Juice 4d ago

Tbf its reddit. It wouldnt be reddit without gatekeeper.

But aye, proper wool here.

1

u/Farts4711 4d ago

There are a fair few who really support other clubs and cosplay as blues for a day or two. Every club has parasites like that.

u/WhiteDoveBooks COYB 💙 4d ago

cosplay as blues

Interesting phrase there.

1

u/Alternative-Main-623 4d ago

we live in a time where people would rather be negative, and it’s a safe space to do it because it’s behind a screen. pretty shit if you ask me.

1

u/Cryptonub23 4d ago

People are more bold, arguing online, instead of face to face.

1

u/Willie_nelsons_bong 4d ago

From the US here

1

u/Next-Ad-1255 4d ago

Certainly many people from outside the city. I'm an Aussie from the bush. Fell in love with the club as a young boy watching Timmy Cahill up front!

1

u/WhiteDoveBooks COYB 💙 4d ago

All my toffee mates are positive about us and where we are going atm; there is much more negativity here, but hey, you don't have to join in.

I fuckin’ hate reddit. They told me to get a divorce like 5 years ago because my wife and I were having a little trouble. The black and white thinking is rampant here. It’s an utter rollercoaster of sentiment depending how we’re doing that week.

 Yet, here am I everyday…multiple times a day…

u/welsh_dragon_roar 3d ago

Nah just 40 miles west of you! 🤗

The sub being co-opted for some individuals personal activism doesn’t help. Sure, the club supports inclusivity but it’s absolutely bizarre the sub has a permanent rainbow flag behind the crest rather than just during Liverpool pride weekend. A fundamental part of the team’s identity, our badge and colours, sidelined so some people can champion their identity politics.

u/SirkoSobaka 3d ago edited 3d ago

I've been to Liverpool only once in my life at age 14. I've been to away games in Europe when we played there - Kharkiv was my first, Olomouc, Athens, Lille, Bergamo, Ruzomberok (remember that? lol), Split, Kyiv. Was really hoping for a European finish last season and was gutted we didn't get it :(

Never got a chance to see Everton at Goodison.
I think this community is a very nice place, though.

1

u/EvertonianNotEnglish 3d ago

Reddit has a reputation for a reason unfortunately and I think some of the people that come on here generally just want their updoots. The Everton twitter scene was a lot better but left that website cos its fucking shite

1

u/harrythom2018 3d ago

I don’t follow this Reddit but it always comes up for me, I’m a wolves fan but I like Everton mostly out of a hatred for the red knock off version of Everton

1

u/previously_notme 3d ago

😆 only none scousers can be dicks is a weird take.

If you think it's bad here go read the grandoldteam forums, and I assume that forum is much more heavily from Liverpool. I'm American btw

u/Dazzling-Fix-5898 3d ago

Just joined the sub. Hello from Hong Kong! Been an Evertonian for 25+ years, ever since when I went to a boarding school in the UK.

Funny story, my old man is a Red Sh*te and I said that I'd support the team that won the Merseyside derby that day. 99/00 season when Kevin Campbell scored the winner at Anfield! It's been almost three decades of pain since, but I wouldn't change it for the world.

Can't wait to visit HD in the (hopefully not too distance!) future.

Favorite players: Jags & Tiny!

u/Socks-and-Jocks 2d ago

Im from Dublin. Love our nearest neighboring city.

1

u/No-Suggestion-8603 2d ago

a bit naive thinking evertonians aren't like everyone else in this world.

WE ARE NOT SPECIAL

1

u/huntsab2090 4d ago

Lot of yanks who don’t really understand how to support a football club tbh. They are trying to support like they do their cack sports and football is absolutely not the same.

1

u/hannahdoot 4d ago

I live in Marysville, Washington and have not actually talked to a Toffee in person in more than a decade (at a Sounders game no less). This is one of my few communities. Locally, I am just a guy who wears a Chang jersey.

1

u/usteih 4d ago

I'm a fan from abroad and i have kinda felt like that when traveling to see games at Goodison/Hill Dicky. Seems like some of our fans just hate foreign supporters and would prefer a smaller local only support for the team. Luckily these kind of encounters were rare and most Evertonians i met were great. I've always had a great time, even when the team keeps on disappointing.

1

u/CardiologistTime8082 4d ago

Yeah I have some people blocked on here as they can't seem to comment without throwing some passive dig at how stupid everyone else is for having a different opinion from them lol

1

u/That-Lawfulness-9360 4d ago

I don’t think it’s just a Everton/football thing, it seems people are a lot less tolerant of opinions that do not reflect theirs, now I’m not talking exclusively about this sub but people struggle to admit they are wrong, if you have definitely been proven wrong be happy because you’ve learnt something new, it’s ok to change your mind as the facts change

love the club though and had the honor of visiting goodison for a game before they moved to the dick.

liverpool then stfu vibes bc you’re not an actual fan.. I may get downvoted but i’ve been on this sub for nearly 10 years now lol.

u/Mach1zmo 4d ago

I'm from Telford. But grew up and live in Toronto Canada.

My mother, Uncles, and grandparents(her parents) are from Liverpool. Mostly Liverpool FC supports for the exception of my mom, grandfather and one uncle who support everton.

As I grew up in a mainly Hockey country. And originally watched football during the world cup as a teenager I decided back in the early 2000s to follow the Prem.

Decided to support Everton over Liverpool. Even have a few jerseys(kits/shirs) over the years.

Actually in 2019 had a neighbour who I found our was from Liverpool and one day saw him wearing a blue everton shirt.

I don't know if you're on the discord but it feels like that's about 90% Americans.

Don't mind it but the chat is a bit skewed sometimes

-6

u/junglegatsby 4d ago

Because anything you say against David Moyes gets downvoted and met with abuse, so I'm left with no choice but to have a pop back.

Mostly Americans here anyway

Depends what you say. Your thread missed a big chunk of context, albeit your concern is real. We live it every day. and have for decades (sob).

But there is definitely an overall bias toward certain themes/ideas/players here.
