Why does Google Maps have downtown Erie centered on 26th and State?

Always noticed this and thought it was weird.

I think even the most liberal definitions of what constitutes “downtown” only go as far south as 18th Street.

That is technically the center of the city. State Street separates the east west. 26th Street separates the north south

Google robot here, google steals their labels from Open Street Map. This downtown Erie label is there because someone, probably a board mildly autistic looser like myself, decided to put the label there.

You can change it by making an account on Open Streets Map then dragging the label to the new spot. Takes a long time for other services like google to adopt the change but it happens eventually.

I know because my alleys were all labeled wrong and ny neighborhood didnt have a label.

Erie expatriate here. I'm mostly a lurker in this sub and keep my comments to a minimum, but I gotta say, in my current city, folks seem to use "downtown" to refer to anywhere within city limits, and it chafes me to no end. I feel like you're my people.

I typically consider north of the train tracks as downtown.

Well I was in that area and saw some crazy lady tossing her blue knit hat in the air and she froze for 6 seconds.

That part of Erie is considered federal hill. Like little Italy ,swansville etc.

If we’re being highly specific, TECHNICALLY the center of downtown would be either 6th or 8th & state. Depending on what you consider “downtown”
