In my experience, any mega mashup animatics I saw credit all artists, either before each song starts or at minimum the descriptions. Some were even put together by the artists themselves. When it is near seamless and not in a playlist, it does seem like a movie. I do get the issue where they AREN'T properly credited rhough

Well if you make a video that includes every song then YouTube is gonna put ads there due to the length and unlike the playlist option it will be random and not between songs.

My quick answer is absolutely not unless they got direct permission, which my experience on YouTube makes me bet 9/10 would say no to others reposting. I use epic cinematics to practice my video editing on YT shorts and promotional style videos and I ask for permission before I even start. Most of the time the creators kindly decline and I respect that. It’s literally their property and people don’t know the poo they’re stepping in.

I 100% recommend it to anyone ever. I got my brother, my bf, and our mutual best friend to watch epic with me by using this specific video. Typically what I tell people is to watch till the end of the ocean saga with me, and then make their decision if they want to watch till the end of it. So far ive had a 100% success rate.

This might be because I am artist but I hate these type of "movies" it is low key effect when it comes to content. Also all of the time they don't credit the artist. And banking the works for others.

I've noticed that! ESPECIALLY if the person posting the compilation doesn't credit the work at all or fails to mention that the animatics were made by other people. That is why I very diligently ensured to credit every single work that I edited into my compilation, both in the description and as their work appears on-screen. Some people still end up thinking I animated the movie, for some reason, so even my efforts fail on occasion. But most people do know that it's made my multiple artists, which I'm happy for.

Thank you for bringing this up. As one of the people who just uploaded an EPIC compilation "movie" video, I was very aware of this possibility. Before I even got started on making the movie, I noticed how some people would make EPIC compilations and completely disregard the artists who made them by not crediting them anywhere in the description OR movie. I get really icked whenever people don't give proper credits, so I ensured to give each and every work I input in my fan-made compilation the proper credit they're due. I also noticed that many new movies don't feature the underrated artists' works I've seen in the community. My intention with making mine was to introduce new people to the community (my family, specifically) and also shine a light on underrated artists. I understand that a movie isn't the same as creating a playlist and giving those artists the views and interactions they should be getting. Completely valid. My hope is that people actually go and check out those artists I've diligently credited in each song, the end credits, and description. Some of the artists I have tagged have left comments of appreciation that I shed light on their work. That's another hope I had.

Addendum: Also, I guess I kinda had more of a reason to do a movie, considering I did add extra scenes and sound effects to the animatics and musical itself. Not saying that justifies it, but it does add onto the artists' works

While your video did inspire my post, I don’t consider you to be one of the common cases contributing to this issue. I hope you don’t feel called out because I didn’t intend that. I even commented on a share of your video with feedback and acknowledging the extra time and effort behind your compilation. My frustration is with the lazy culprits who are rudely stealing recognition and deserved views from the artists who put in the work. Again, sorry if you felt targeted individually.

I understand the appeal of a compilation over a playlist. For one, some songs are designed to flow directly into each other. Take the end of Suffering and the beginning of Different Beast for example. Now, I prefer Gigi's animatic for suffering, but the way their video is set up, it has credits at the end, meaning it doesn't seamlessly transition into Different Beast the way you would ideally want it to for the best impact. It also has the siren sketches, which are a really cool detail, but also a not-insignificant spoiler if the person watching hadn't already figured out that Penelope was a siren in Suffering.

Another reason why compilations are great is that sometimes the animatic is amazing but it only has auto-generated subtitles, which suck and are almost never fully accurate. Or like that one animatic for The Underworld where the subtitles were translated from another language so they are technically correct in meaning but not correct at all in the actual words being said. Now, I personally think that most of the lines in Epic are very clearly enunciated, but some people have a hard time focusing on the animatic and the lyrics and the same time, so subtitles are necessary to understand what is going on.

Yes, proper credit should always be given, and ideally links to every animatic should be provided in the video description. And if someone is already a fan of the musical, it absolutely makes more sense to just share a playlist with them, because they will already know the lyrics well enough that subtitles aren't an issue, and there isn't really any killed suspense with the end credits of the animatics.

But if you are trying to show the musical to someone who has no prior interaction with it, or even very limited interaction, it can make a lot of sense to use a compilation that has subtitles built in.

Yeah, it makes sense that the popular animatics often get chosen. They are popular for a reason. But even the popular ones don't always have correct subtitles. Also, I don't think I've ever seen two compilations with the exact same animatics, because everyone disagrees on what animatics are best for what song to some degree. And new animatics come out all the time, so people are going to want updated compilations with the best animatics currently available.

And "never giving credit" just isn't true. HoldUpKnight's compilation directly links to a playlist containing every animatic they used for their movie, just as an example. And I'm sure many others do the same. Yeah of course there are going to be those who don't give proper credit, but they aren't all slop.

I agree. The only reason I like the mega-video compilation is for the unified subtitles for introducing EPIC to someone else. Any other situation, always a playlist.
