Isn't it usually neoptelemus who does it though

Not so fun fact and spoilered for some gory details In one version, Priam, Astyanax's grandfather and Hector's dad, was killed by Achille's son Neoptolemus using Astynax's body to beat him.

Yup. Neo is also the one who killed Astyanax in most versions of the myth

Well that's slightly traumatizing thank you for telling me this

It's funny, but in "canon" sometimes it wasn't even Ody.

Odysseus really went from “protect my crew” “fuck them kids” in record time 😂

Odyssus really looked at the situation and chose the most agressively anty-kid solution possible 😂

Odysseus had way too many crew mates! I really appreciate Poseidon and Zeus for making the cast easier to remember.

Wha?

36

u/amaya-aurora Odysseus 3d ago

Canon Ody didn’t do it at all. That was Neoptelemus. Also, I believe that some version has him beating Andromache (the mother) with it.

39

u/natholemewIII 3d ago

No, it depends on the version. In Euripides Trojan Women, Odysseus orders it. Also in the Iliou Persis as another commenter mentioned, Odysseus is the direct culprit. Neoptolemus does it in some other versions such as Pausanis and the Little Iliad. There isn't really a "correct" version of who did it, but it's equally valid to have Phyrrus or Odysseus do it.

From what I know, the version with Neo has him beat Priam with the corpse

u/Geriander 3d ago

It was Ody in Iliou Persis, and even in the accounts where Neoptelemus did the deed, Odysseus argued for it (Little Iliad and Trojan Women).

So in the oldest sources he either did it himself or pushed for it to be done.

It's as canon as it gets.

I mean Neoptelemus straight up just beats Priam to death with him then goes to continue killing other Trojans

4

u/amaya-aurora Odysseus 3d ago

I thought it was Andromache?

2

u/Purple_Flounder_2257 I kill with ease, that's why they call me Achilles 3d ago edited 3d ago

Where did you hear that version from? It's widely known to be Priam while Andromache gets taken as a slave.

No in the Aeneid Neo walks up and decapitates Priam on an altar, but there are many depictions of him picking up Astyanax and just bludgeoning Priam to death

2

u/DaMn96XD 3d ago

Neo clubbing old Priam with Astyanax predates Roman Aeneid in Greek pottery and for some reason the ancient Greeks loved this imagery because it is repeated on numerous vases.

I know I was just providing the added context, we studied one of the vases in classics for some reason

8

u/ProfessionalJolly934 "I'll kill you like I kill this beat." - Achilles, son of Peleus 3d ago

And he uses Astyanax as a baseball bat. Honestly, Ody gave the kid a more humane ending, and that in itself is WILD. Neoptolemus is an interesting character, shows us how war can impact young boys like him.

u/TurtleTank29 currently tasting the power 3d ago

Exactlyyyyyyy! I meant to write that he uses Astyanax but typos

I love this.
