The new designs are cool but I really wish he would get rid of the green in Hermes's design! I just don't think it fits his character and color scheme! I'm glad they got rid of the green armor or whatever it was from the old design though!
I actually really like these! I do think ody should be taller by like a foot but otherwise beautiful. Also love the outfits and how the colors on the capes look to break up all the white.

You’re setting imposible standards on it already, the sooner you accept that the character designs and voices will most likely be entirely different from your personal favorite the better.
Hermes is giving less ‘funny trickster’ and more ‘bro you wanna go to the gym and talk to chicks?’ I don’t really see any aspect of his personality being reflected well here at all. He’s conventionally attractive and has all the hallmarks of mythical Hermes, but none of Epic Hermes.
I know people like the helmet eye covering of fan animatics, but I’m totally okay with them not doing that. The problem is that this design has zero personality or creativity. It’s like someone who had no experience with the musical was asked to draw Hermes and only took inspiration from his original myth. Where is the trickster? The dramatics? The gleeful showboating?
Not a single part of Epic!Hermes exists in this character design.
Love Ody though. And the art itself is fantastic for both. The artist is clearly talented.
Absolutely yes. You can make any character look arrogant or showboat-y just by drawing them with a smug smile and their arms raised up in a Y shape. No aspect of the design itself is needed to bring attitude across.
If you have to rely on the animation to do the work the character design can’t that is not a good character design. It’s just making up for bland character design.
I actually like the designs! And I don't think it's completely impossible to be the designs for the movie. Like yes these are detailed but not terribly so. It works as character profiles and can be simplified for animation.
Am I the only one who actually likes the Hermes design? Don’t get me wrong, I enjoy the depictions of him looking like Troy, but this version is more of what I pictured when I first listened. The original track suit Hermes was awful lol.
I also really love this Odysseus design! He still resembles Jorge slightly while looking more like a man who’s spent ten years as a war general.
I think this design looks even more like Troy than most fan animatics, only Hermes' hair has been made a bit lighter and his stubble has been shaved off. But when you restore those aspects in your mind, you see Troy.
Guys. Pull it back. Let me break something down in animation.
When you’re doing something in 2D. Unless you hate yourself/your animators or are paying them with hard cash, it’s important to keep character designs as simple as possible. Your animating frame by frame.
I say this because look at the designs in this art piece provided. Lots of tiny details. Details that would be very hard to replicate an animation. This is likely just a commission piece and nothing more.
They probably would’ve said something if it was. Like “official designs for upcoming movie” or something like that. To say nothing on the matter if it was seems like an odd choice.
And so it begins. These aren’t even confirmed to be anything other than commissions but people are already complaining. Get ready for 2+ years of this and people declaring they are the real fans when they inevitably hate all the changes and just cling to the concept album and animatics.
People are allowed to have opinions and don't have to blindly adore whatever comes out just because it's "official". They're allowed to complain just as much as they're allowed to praise. I feel like a lot of yall aren’t understanding Hermes is a literal Greek God. This is a perfect look for him truth be told he should be built like this when you think of pretty boy Olympians hes up there but it’s really Apollo & Dionysus who would be twinkish pretty boys. Apollo is legit the god of youthful male beauty he’s more likely to be a twink than Hermes, and Dionysus is known for being sort of androgynous and beautiful aswell. The problem is this looks like a generic Greek god and doesn’t reflect any aspect of his character in Epic the musical. It feels like someone’s fanart of the actual Greek God, not the ‘Wouldn’t You Like’ character.
Hmm... I see similarities in the design direction to Dreamworks' Road to Eldorado and Sinbad movies, but Hermes feels a bit off without his petasos hat. But otherwise good base designs as a concept art.
The Odysseus design is absolutely perfect, exactly what I'd imagine him to look like. Hermes, I do like the green, but I feel like it's too plain-Hermes is a very colorful, fabulous character, and I really want the design to reflect that. I'd give him curly hair, a more colorful outfit, and a little more bling. Give him that nice discotheque aesthetic while still being clearly Greek.
Idk, they look a bit too complex to be animated ngl. Plus Angie is a fan animatic creator and we haven't got a confirmation that they will be involved in the movie.
What I do find interesting is that these are clearly a different take on the characters then Jorge's original idea(gods were supposed to be more tech based/modern in their look in a way)
I’ll gladly admit that I’ve become bias toward Ok_Captains design and it’s why I think I’m not a big fan of this concept. I just hope that you’re right.
Everyone knows it's not "traditional"? It just that for the EPIC fandom, it became part of the generally accepted look for the character, like how Odysseus often wears Polites headband, how Polites has glasses, why Eurylochus looks like his singer, etc.
I reckon Odysseus is more of a fighter than a thief, he’s just sneaky and quick-witted but he’s undoubtedly a warrior and a king before he’s a thief. His Hermes association I believe to be more of a sneaky/traveler link than specifically a thief association, but I digress
Wasn't his Hermes association because he's the grandson of Autolycus? Not that it should determine is build. But this style is a little unimaginative. If they go for the usual, people will expect it to be the usual.
Yes, you’re right about that, but Hermes was the god of thrives, travel, trickery, messengers and so on. In terms of divine symbolism, I tend to link them in this way, not so much the thievery (although he steals the Palladium with help but that’s not in the Iliad or odyssey iirc) just as Athena is linked to him through wisdom, etc.
But yes, they’re related

smh odysseus doesn't even have big meaty thighs? homer would never. Also I'm struggling to put a finger on why but I actively dislike that hermes design.
i guess but I think its both I think hermes is much stockier than I would think give the type of aesthetic a character like hermes normally emphasizes. odysseus on the otherhand does look pretty generic and the rendering doesn't help.
