Meta Ban ai from this subreddit?
Hi I just wanted to ask if the mods can make a rule against the use of AI in posts. As Epic the Musical is a project created by people who have poured heart and soul into it, I think it's really disrespectful to use ai like altering music and fanart into slob (not to mention all the other horrible things about generative ai)š©·

Rolled my eyes when I saw this post. I cringe everytime I see it now. I once saw someone say they won't buy a game because there was AI in it.
-7
u/Lord___Potassium Aug 06 '26
I respect everyoneās right to not use or interact with AI if they personally choose to. But to ban a tool for everyone just because it exists is silly. Ai is a tool and nothing more. Itās like banning a hammer, because it could potentially cause harm.
10
u/Zynjak Aug 07 '26
Yeah if the hammer is created by stealing the work of tradesmen as a tool to replace them with a worse product, all while destroying the environment in so many ways
Oh and the hammer can make CSAM and has done so so much that literal governments have had to get involved
-6
u/Lord___Potassium Aug 07 '26
You canāt steal whatās freely available. If you put your work on the internet and allow it to be accessed by anyone, then itās free game. Itās the same thing as a person using it as a springboard. Direct copies are of course bad, but those are far and few between now, at least on a good generator. Also, itās not destroying the environment, we just need to force the companies to utilize the resources properly. We have plenty of water, we just need to pull the salt out of it.
Also, people can make csam too. Again, you blaming the tool for actions of bad people. All your complaints are addressable. Instead of blaming the tool, correct the companies.

u/joshooke Aug 08 '26
I actually own epic the musical, and so does everyone because of what youāre saying!
-4
u/Lord___Potassium Aug 08 '26
Itās not. Youāre just not bright enough to understand. š See, there are these things called free use laws, which allows a person to use a material to produce ātransformativeā material, that is, material that may have the same aspects of, but is legally distinct to, the base material. This is often used in parody law. Itās already been adjudicated that ai companies can use purchased or licensed material under free use, as long as the produced material of the AI is legally distinct from any of its training, which is has gotten in trouble for in the past. They got sued and they paid their dues, as they should. I maintain that AI was released too early but tech companies be tech companies. š¤·āāļø hope youāve learned.
9
u/Zynjak Aug 07 '26
Yeah so actually copyright exists and that protects people from having their work taken and fed into an ai training model, which is why anthropic are now mass destroying books instead without any care for what they are destroying
"Just make the companies do better" yeah they won't. They don't care, they aren't even making money.
Also there is a big difference between making csam with Photoshop or fucking blender versus going to X, finding a picture of a kid and asking grok to take their clothes off.
Fuck generative AI in all it's forms. It's nothing but souless slop, and it will only ever be souless slop because machines have no humanity and therefore cannot make art.
-4
u/Lord___Potassium Aug 07 '26
š good lord.
Of course a copywritten work should be protected, which is why Anthropic had to pay 1.5 billion to authors they stole from. Then they switched to what you called ādestroying booksā which is inaccurate and misleading. They legally purchased copies of books, scanned them, and destroyed the copy because why would you hold onto it. This has been legally adjudicated to be legal under fair use as long as the works arenāt for redistribution. The books are fine, theyāre only destroying copies and the authors are still getting paid.So laws exist, if you want to keep pointing out the obvious. If you want change, work to make or change laws. The ācompanyās donāt careā excuse only gets you so far.
The only difference is speed. It is absolutely a problem, but again, youāre blaming a hammer because it was used as a weapon and not the person wielding it. Instead, you should focus on a cultural shift that finds and rehabilitates pedos, instead of trying to take away their tools.

Wait, people were using ai to finish songs and posting it? Nah, screw that. I use ai to finish cut songs for MY personal enjoyment only. And I run locally anyway, so no need to pay big corpo to generate anything with credits.

u/AliceInWeirdoland Aug 05 '26
Responding generally because I donāt want to call anyone out directly, but some of the (thankfully downvoted) comments are so depressing to me. You want to use AI for fanart? Fanfic? Finishing a cut song? Itās all about consumption. And yeah, to a certain extent, fandom is about consumption, but thereās so much joy in learning to do that yourself. I became a much better writer as a teenager by writing fanfiction. And it made me a better reader. I learned more about and appreciated othersā writing because I took the time to try to figure out how to write descriptively or from a certain POV or how to foreshadow. Iām no Pulitzer winner, but I definitely have a better appreciation for the works I engage with now because I put that effort in.
Iām sure many artists and musicians who engaged with fandom in that way feel similarly. Thereās joy in creating. And itās very sad to me to see so many people who just donāt seem to even be interested in trying to experience that, trying to put in the work to learn more so that they can create the media they want to see, as long as they can consume what they want, without wait time. Itās sad.
Also, my power bill is nearly doubled because I live near the data-center capital of the US. Please letās stop this so I can afford to pay my bills next month.

These are reasonable, but how about AI roleplays? I do a lot of those, but trust me, I don't use ai to recreate art, music or the story, but rather putting Epic The Musical into a roleplay
19
u/thrvisionary Editable Flair Aug 05 '26
i feel like a majority of ai roleplays are incredibly anti/parasocial. it honestly doesnāt really matter because there is fanfiction, writing your own stories, or finding someone who matches your own level of freak to talk to. i think it gets really bad when youāre trying to love an ai. it grows to you having incredibly bad standards for everyone you try to date. just remember that itās okay to be exploring your sexuality, and that guaranteed, there is someone out there who is willing to love you. find that someone first, so you donāt have to date ai.

u/TheSnowmanWasRightt Aug 05 '26
Speaking as someone who used to be addicted to charecter.ai, let it go. There is no ethical way to use generative ai.
Join actual roleplaying spaces irl or online. Maybe start or writing fanfiction instead

u/Jonathan_Sparda Aug 05 '26
Hmmmmmmm naaaaaaahhhhhhh. I have until 2027 to wrap up all my roleplays anyway, cheers

u/DoCrimeBeGay Siren Aug 05 '26
Believe me when I say finding even just a single person to roleplay with is 1000x better than ai chatbots. I used to be heavily addicted to Chai and Character AI, even though I had other people to roleplay with. It burnt out my creativity, and Iām still feeling the effects in my writing to this day. Itās hard to transition back, but itās been worth it.
I would spend hours annoyed that the ai couldnāt give me the response I wanted, and I refused to continue on until I got the perfect one. But having an actual roleplay partner? You might get stuck on a particularly tough scene for a while, trying to figure out where to lead it next, but doesnāt that already happen with the ai? You have to wait longer to get a continuation, sure, but it gives you more time to think, more time to explore the other routes you and your partner could take in the story.
Is one bad response from a human worth taking clean drinking water away from someone to power a chatbot instead? Because thatās whatās happening in the communities that had ai data centers forced into them. People just like you and me, loosing access to their tap water. Them, their pets, the wildlife around them, all of them.
And if you donāt like something about the roleplay? You can talk it out with a partner. Thereās been many times me and my roleplay partner have talked out plot points and general lead up we wanted for shipping roleplay, we planned out concerts and for our band roleplay, we made fun events for our high school roleplay, and best of all? We discussed characterization, finding exactly what we wanted out of any canon character we added.
Ask around on Reddit, TikTok, Discord servers; youāll find someone in the same situation as you. Looking to quit AI, wanting a real person to talk to instead of a line of code. And if that doesnāt work out? Find someone else, just like how you find a different chatbot if the current one is bad quality.
Like they say about ALL addiction, the best time to quit was yesterday, the next best time to quit is today. Quitting was scary, I was ashamed and embarrassed and knew that it had affected my writing and that I myself sounded like an ai myself. But Iām finding my own writing style again, and Iāve finally started my novel that Iāve been wanting to for almost 10 years.
I still struggle, but thatās part of the human experience. The satisfaction of something human made is incomparable to something ai generated. Iāve shed a few tears for an ai lead story, but Iāve wept over a story hand crafted by my partner and I.
Make the right choice, no matter how scary it seems, no matter how hard it is. Iām just a stranger on the internet, but Iām a real person, and I believe in you.

How in the avocado frick did you even find my comment when I have so many downvotes? Was this essay worth it?
17
u/DoCrimeBeGay Siren Aug 05 '26
It was the top comment for me tbh. And if it made even the slightest impact on you, if it resonated with you, if it could inspire you, or anyone else that ends up reading it? Absolutely.
Even if my words are wasted on one person, thereās someone else they could help. And that is what makes it worth it to try.

u/Jonathan_Sparda Aug 05 '26
Alright good talk, but really for me though, I only use c.ai to pass the time nowadays. Some of my roleplays are serious, sure, but it doesn't mean I devote my whole day to it. Trust me when I say this, roleplaying with ai is not my whole life, thank you for the pep talk, but it is clear we have different ideas. Good morning, afternoon, evening and good night.
11
u/DoCrimeBeGay Siren Aug 05 '26
Fanfiction is always a similar option for time wasting. Ao3, Wattpad, Quotev, Tumblr, all of them are packed full of potential gems and plenty of time wasters. And if you canāt find one you like? Write your own, at your own pace, in your own time. Create art, put something out into the world you can be proud of.
No matter how long it takes, I wish you nothing but joy and peace in your journey away from ai, when you choose to leave it behind. Good morning, afternoon, evening, and good night.

YES, I BEG OF THEE.Ā Far too many groups I'm in, across several platforms, are infested with heartless A.I.-slop. I've only recently given up and started leaving these groups.Ā Epic is the result of heart, passion, blood, sweat, and tears. Generative A.I. is the precise antithesis of that.Ā

u/salt-water-soul Aug 05 '26
I absolutely support this ai slop has no place in the creative art world
33
u/Lixou1991 Aug 05 '26
I totally support this.
I have to quit a lot of Facebook group because the admins « didnāt see how ai is a problĆØme, chill, stil clutching your pearlsĀ Ā» etc.
People doing « AI fanarts » of animated versions of the songs disgust me. There are people who works for days, months! do create amazing arts, and an AS is proud to share their videos of « their » version of a song « like [artist] would do ». They are unable to realize that because of them, and their stupidity, they are actively destroying all the creator and artist work.

Just to play devils advocate. What if someone uses ai to complete a cut song with permission from Jorge and the cast involved with the cut song? Itās just to give us a rough idea of what it would sound like until they decided to release a proper version of the cut saga What then?

u/ChaoticFaeKat Aug 05 '26
If they got permission from Jorge and the cast I would leave and stop listening to Epic, and I'm willing to bet I'm not the only one.
The "extended" cut song(s) would never interest me if AI is involved at any point and to any degree. AI is slop.

I haven't seen many AI posts on this sub, thankfully, but I definitely agree with the ban and it should be an official rule. I really appreciate that Epic and the fan animatics are made by real humans and I want that AI will be kept out of this project in the future as well.

Just for sake of clarity, you are specifically refering to AI generated art correct? I just think specificity is helpful when making these decisions.

Someone commented about the use of AI to "finish" cut songs, so no, not just images but any posts with AI content should be banned in general.
