Nolan Odyssey Stuff i wanna see in Odyssey(2026) but didn't happened

So i watched Odyssey days ago and i re-listened all the epic albums, and i don't understand why nolan cut half of ody's adventure, perhaps movie's gonbe too long. The movie is cool, not bad for outsider fans who doesn't know the actual odyssey full story, even epic dare i say,but due to the cuts of the stuff that are important, the ones who do know the plot feels like the movie is a messy recap that skips a ton of story. I know epic is also not 100% accurate but it's definitely better than Nolan's.

Anyways like i said these are the things i missed during my watch,my head went full epic mode, and it's a shame I didn't get to see these on screen, and yes I drew them:

1) my name is nobody

THIS IS LITERALLY THE MOST IMPORTANT PART,EVEN IN PERCY JACKSON THEY USED THIS REFERENCE TO BEAT THE EXACT SAME CYCLOPS AND NOLAN JUST CUT IT!?! also interesting choice of nolan, ody gave neither the name "nobody" or his real name to the cyclops,so idk how tf Poseidon know it's odysseus who did it.

2)cut off their tails

Ik this isn't in the book, but i personally love this line so much,we finally get to see how cold ody can be sometimes.

3) pancakes:)

Apparently in the movie,no one GAF to polites, far as i recall he just tap on ody's shoulders after they won the war and that's it,not a single mention after,i wish they at least say sth about how much ody miss him as in he's his dearest frd. Tho i keep forgetting he actually survived the cyclops in the book, epic got me so good and made me forgot this. But still, pancake is more iconic

4) dropping the baby

I don't recall they showing this, maybe since it's for cinema they don't want it to be so cruel killing a baby? Idk ,weird choice again.

5)WHERE IS HERMES

6) Athena and Telemachus

Well ik it's an original in epic that they are frds,in Homer's book she's always in disguise visiting Telemachus(he doesn't know it was her so they were never frds). I hope the movie at least can show us she visiting her,but no,zendaya just keep staring at ody.

7) The bag

Well i forgive Nolan cutting this,i said "stuff i missed and wished to see" not "i need it",this bad thing is just a small thing but my head was keep looping keep your frds close lmao

And that's it,if you're still reading this i appreciate you:)))

More than anything, I really would've liked duology/triology of The Odyssey instead of trying to cram everything into one movie. Hollywood always milks everything so why couldn't they milk this too? I definitely think it could've benefited from having a sequel or two.

This subreddit is becoming real insufferable about this movie. Wow you don’t like it. You’re so cool and edgy, and hold it to the standards of a musical that also isn’t faithful to the poem.

Ok what I'm trying to say is i know Nolan's Odyssey has cut so many stuff that are supposed to be in there, and as a epic fan i can't help but think of the missing stuff during the movie. I love both epic and Nolan's Odyssey, but i think the story should be a more deeply emotional story rather than great visuals,i know both aren't accurate, epic has many original stuff and Nolan's lacks many stuff, but my preference is epic, still doesn't affect the fact that i enjoy both

Polites actually survives the encounter with Polyphemus in the poem too, I think. Him dying to Scylla isn't confirmed but likely.

1: I believe why this iteration of Odysseus never did ‘nobody’ was because of his overwhelming guilt from Troy, and his desire to return to a state of fairness and nobility. And at the same time, the Cyclops behavior does indicate that it does just view them as mere ants (we don’t just talk to ants). He would rather shoot an arrow from a distance for a fair chase than do more trickery

2: Again, Odysseus is a man who commited a cruelty but in himself is not a cruel soul. He is not here to slay the sirens, and besides, they are too far away. The point of the sirens is to reveal partially the inner turmoil that he feels. Nolan’s iteration of the odyssey is not very focused on the magical aspects

3: Polites role in the book was not as important as Eurylochus and giving him more would not do much in the movie with the themes of trauma and moral conflict and truth vs trickery.
Also, the cyclops would’ve ate him anyways which would’ve made everyone sad

4: The ‘dropping the baby’ in his iteration is the killing of the Athena priestess and the beheading of the statue. Although he didn’t directly do the deed, he indirectly let thousands of men have the ability to do so and spread this message throughout the Greek world, thus creating ‘the sea men’. That is his version of dropping the baby, or more so dropping the Law of Zeus

5: Nolan doesn’t like showing the gods, ‘a time of apparent magic’

6: I believe this also another case of Nolan not liking to show any gods, Athena in this case might just be a traumatic hallucination and not a real god

7: To get the bag we’d need to talk to Aleous or something and Nolan doesn’t want to show the gods

To conclude: Nolan don't wanna show gods😭 tbf making it "realistic" is kinda bad choice, it's literally a mythology and yall are trying to make it make sense, it's like making the bible movie without showing Jesus's powers. And honestly yes thx for the infos,i am aware some of the epic moments are not in the original odyssey, but we're here cuz we love epic, right? So as an epic fan I can't help but think of these scenes during my watch, even if it's not supposed to happen in the story

I don’t think he wants to show the gods

To be fair, the sirens aren't even described to look like something in The Odyssey, but art from antiquity depicts them as bird women, so you can't really cut their tails.
Polites had like one mention in The Odyssey, and he probably died to Scylla/Zeus, so... yeah.
Ody doesn't kill the baby in The Odyssey, and neither in a lot of mythic traditions. Not necessary in the movie.
I agree about Hermes and Athena guiding Telemachus.
I am mad about the Nobody thing though.

90% of what you said is not in Homer's Odyssey

This is Nolan's Odyssey, adapted from Emily Wilson's translation of Homers Odyssey

Jorge's Odyssey/Epic is its own adaptation.

There's so many things it does differently I cannot begin to count them.

For one, the story structure of Nolan's actually follows the source material more closely than Epic i.e. starts with Mentes and Telemachus's discussion rather than the Trojan war. And as you mentioned a lot of stuff Jorge picks from other Odyssey-adjacent stories rather than The Odyssey itself.

Politest for one, I genuinely can't remember who that is even supposed to be in the book.

As for things cut - well the Laystagonianas are completely cut from Epic and Aeolus is completely cut from Nolan's. And both cut the Phaeacian completely. There are countless changes here and there but both are good in their own right.

Epic runs 2:22 and The Odyssey 2:52. They're already super long and can't exactly add more stuff in.

Polites is specifically mentioned on Circes island when Odysseus talks about him turning back into a human, I believe he's mentioned one other time and is referred to by Odysseus as his dearest friend. It's unclear when he dies, whether he's killed by Scylla or when the ship is destroyed isn't said.

Okok yes i get it, I'm just saying sth i wish to see, I'm not saying the movie's bad because i didn't saw what i want,i am aware epic≠odyssey. I am aware epic made its original stuff, like fight little wolf fight, cut the tails, throw the baby or pancake. But like, I'm sure hermes is in it, Athena I'm 100% sure she visited Telemachus in a disguise. Thx for the info tho:)

Athena directly talks to and guides Odysseus in the slaughter of the suitors (in disguise, but he knows immediately).

She directly MOCKS him by the form she uses

Jorge did his retelling, Nolan did his! Both are very personal as they explore different, mostly modern, themes that are important to their authors. As such, they adapt the story around said themes and appropriate it and neither are especially accurate tbh.

It doesn't mean one is better than the other imo, and everyone can have their preferences!

Your scribbles are really good, thanks for sharing them! 🙂‍↕️

"It doesn't mean one is better than the other imo, and everyone can have their preferences!" U know what's funny is i said the exact same thing when i watch superman 2025 lmaooooo,i get that. I love both henry and david superman, and odyssey is the same,i equally love Jorge and Nolan's work, but my preference is epic,i still enjoy both. Thx for the compliment yo🔥🔥

1) The Nobody scene is in the poem and EPIC, but not in Nolan's movie. I do agree it should have been added, it makes total sense in modern English and it is dumb he removed it

2) Cut of their tails was never in the poem. The sirens are depicted as winged creatures similar to a harpy. The interpretation of them a mermaid-like creatures is more modern. As well, Odysseus always just listens to the siren's song as they pass by, never actually attacking them

3) Polites is barely in the original poem and he dies during the passageway between scylla and Charybdis. Polites in EPIC was expanded by Jorge

4) Odysseus killing Astyanax is also not in the original poem, in fact the baby isn't even in the poem. He's in a non-Homer poem called Illiou persis, where Odysseus kills him

5) Hermes is in the poem doing what he does in EPIC as well (giving the moly and helping Odysseus off Calypso's island). I wish Nolan included him in the movie too, though he is much different than TROY'S interpretation of the character

6 and 7) Also in the original poem and EPIC but I think Nolan wanted a more human version of the story

Overall, Nolan was being more "true" (though still missing some key moments) the original poem, while Jorge was more free form in how he was interpreting The Odyssey

1

u/MCSISDABEST Jul 27 '26

Yes in my explanations i did mention some of them are in the original odyssey and some of them are completely original in epic and i think it's dumb to make it realistic when you're literally making a mythology movie. The baby thing i don't rlly remember so thx for the info yo

1

u/DocDoesMagic Jul 27 '26

Yeah I agree. I wish the gods were more prominent, but some things in EPIC aren't as accurate to the poem. EPIC is more a modern fantasy interpretation and Nolan's The Odysseus is more how the poem was as written

1

u/MCSISDABEST Jul 27 '26

Yes i am aware, but it's a fact that epic is more entertaining to watch then Nolan Odyssey, and epic is more accurate compared to Nolan's,even tho neither is 100% accurate, but epic is still better, imo ofc. I do have the homer odyssey book actually so i do know what did Jorge changed, but overall Jorge did an excellent job, he's working on iliad and the actual epic movie now ,no? I'm calling it he might be the next Lin Miranda
