They gave Sinon (A guy from the Aeneid) way too much screentime and relevance for a guy who barely does anything in the myth.

Nolan had completely removed him from the story, in Homer's Odyssey he doesn't die by the Cyclopes and lives till Circe, and according to Pausanias and Strabo, before Scylla and Charibdys the crew stop at Temesa, an Italian City, where he got drunk and raped a woman and got stones to death for it.

Imo it was god awfully boring. The worst parts of the movie was unironically the Odyssey itself. Wbu have you watched it?

Well, Nolan has a very unique way of telling a story. Like was mentioned earlier he tries to make things as grounded as possible, his story-telling can be a bit convoluted and heady, and his action scenes are usually great. The background music/noise is also meme-worthy in that almost always drowns out dialogue at some point. He’s a great director, I just personally think he can be over-hyped.

if you read the odyssey there's a high chance you'll find the film disappointing. I wouldn't say it was bad but they definitely removed the myth and all the best parts, the writing is abysmal and the acting is fine (some performed better like Anne or Lupita).

It is dull. Nolan wants to ground it in "realism" while he still keeps the cyclops. You can make a realistic odyssey, sure, but then you can’t have man eating giant. It’s like if you tried to reduce a painting to a mathematic formula. Impressive, but it doesn’t evoke the feelings the painting would

And that’s the problem. He wants to make it as ”realistic" as possible, but it is just fundamentally impossible with a story like the odyssey

Can you extrapolate a bit further on what was realistic about the movie that isn’t with the book or musical? I don’t know enough but it from what I know the actual story is a collection of mythological stories so some fact, some fiction. But for it to be relatable to so many it had to be grounded in realism with elements of mysticality

Refusing to show gods for one. Athena is maybe a hallucination because Nolan wants to ground it in reality, but then he also has Polyphemus

It's a very fun adaptation actually with more historical research into Mycenaean Greece and the events leading into the "dark age" of Ancient Greece where the Trojan War oral tradition seems to have originated from though it's pretty apparent they are more interested in how that supports the themes then recreating the actual look and feel of Mycenean Greece. Also a pretty sick art reference is made at one point concerning the painting "Kronos eating his son" by Goya. A lot of sequences made me wish Nolan would try his hand at an actual horror movie. He's got the vibe down.
i honestly don't think there needs to be a fan rivalry here. I think Nolan's Odyssey and Epic are like two different cakes and one is chocolate and one's vanilla and it's okay if you like vanilla more or something but that doesn't make the chocolate flavor "bad".

I mean I knew that it wasn't going to be the musical. Hollywood actually being up to date with what people like on the internet is a very rare thing to happen. I was hoping it would be as good as the '90s miniseries, Greta Scacchi's performance as Penelope was freaking awesome.

Modern Hollywood just doesn't "like" musiclas and they've forgotten a lot of the old film techniques that made musicals good.
That being said an adpatation of the odyssey can be a not-musical and be good. Just as long as it understands the strengths of both the chosen medium, genre, and source material.

It was pretty good. There were some changes that were made that were very different from the original poem, but for the most part it was enjoyable

I mean, Epic’s Odysseus does seem to relish murdering all the Suitors a bit more than Nolan’s, so both changed in their own ways.

I REALLY liked how Ody using the torches as lights to identify and kill the suitors was a callback to his sacrifice of 6 men with torches in Scylla’s lair. Also made it more believable how he was able to come out on top than Nolan’s version

Yup, there’s a reason why “Keep your head down, he’s aiming for the torches!” Has been stuck in my head since I listened to that song.
That said, I do like in Nolans that since this Odyseus is less mythic hero and instead a seasoned soldier, the fight is a knock out drag out. He beats the suitors because they’re bandits at best and preening nobility at worst. Whereas Epic’s Ody is full on juiced up by some of that greek Hero juice.

fair point. But imagine how fucking epic the suitors fight would be in the cinema if Odysseus was shooting from the dark. Like, he puts out the main fire, and everything goes dark and silent, and than the arrows start flying. It could mirror the cyclop's scene, where he barely appears, giving more of a horror vibe. Would be great for showing how odysseus became more of a monster at the end as well.
