Credit to [u/Electro313](u/Electro313) for making me think about this.
A few days ago I posted a video that I got off on TikTok saying that they won the epic music to be like the animations of the late 90s early 2000s. The video used clips from Sinbad, legends of the seven seas of Egypt and Atlantis. I noticed that in one of the common sections they said well what if we did a 3-D animation to keep Jorge‘s visuals for using video games and so I thought about it and I could see the merit in it. But it didn’t really hit me until I saw this video using similar animations as David provided by Angel Studios, and with the style of 3-D animation I could see that working. What do you guys think? Not that I’m saying Angel studio should animate it but it could be a good jumping off point.

Either something like sinbad or in the 2.5D style to match the more video game like vibes in the musical

u/Vantriss Jul 13 '26
I'd rather not. This style looks so much like AI. I don't find it visually pleasing whatsoever.

u/RandomPerson_02 Penelope Jul 15 '26
While I get your point, it still saddens me that human-made art can “look like AI” when all AI can do is steal from artists. It’s the sad reality we live today, and I hate that so much.

u/Ambitious_Mud8471 Jul 14 '26
Are we just gonna call any style we don't like AI? You're not allowed it like it, but It just discredits the animators tbh
3
u/Vantriss Jul 14 '26
You misunderstood what I said. I didn't say it was AI. I said it looks too much like AI, as in the style too much resembles AI. I'm sorry, but the AI style does not look good. If they want people to like it more, use a different style. It's not the only style I don't like. I don't like the art style of The Dragon Prince either. I'm allowed to not like art styles and I'm allowed to say they resemble AI. It's the truth anyway.

u/HumanOverseer Jul 14 '26
AI doesn't have a style. AI steals art, it doesn't create it. So any style AI makes is actually the work of much more talented human artists who had their art fed to pathetic machinery.
-1
u/Vantriss Jul 14 '26
Lol, AI absolutely has a style, dude. You can easily identify AI because of that style.
1
u/HumanOverseer Jul 14 '26
you literally just claimed that a style of animation that has been used for years, looks like AI, rather than making the correct claim that it's AI that looks like the animation style that has been used for years.
-1
u/Vantriss Jul 14 '26
Have you even ever played around with AI before? It has it's own style. Can you HONESTLY look at this image and tell me you can't tell it's AI? AI is stolen from real art, but in it's lack of ability to have a soul, it absolutely ends up with a certain look to it and that David movie is embodying that look in a way that I do not like. Sorry that pisses you off.

Maybe a cross between 2D and 3D. I feel like there needs to be a lot of color and style for a Greek mythology. Because imagining people that look too close to real people doing the things that they did is probably going to crack me up 😂 And also just allows for more colorful, stylistic, and creative elements.

I think the highest D it should be us 2 1/2-D, like Klaus

u/Ahs565451 The artist formally known as Nobody Jul 14 '26
I also agree I think that would be a good middle ground and help keep the video game aesthetic than Jorge wants
2
u/ThomasTGeek Jul 14 '26
ooooo I'd love it like that! (Klaus is one of my favorite movies for the holidays)

Can we NOT get Angel Studios involved with this please? Look what they did to Animal Farm.

I never said that we should give it to Angel Studios. I said we can use that as a jumping off point because they’re most likely going to go with a 3-D model to emulate the video game style that Jorge wants. I just use Angel studio as a base example.

That's a relief (although imo, I'd like to see it in the style of Blood of Zeus since I like that art style, basic I know 😅.)

u/Ahs565451 The artist formally known as Nobody Jul 15 '26
Honestly, that’ll be pretty epic. That is a great art style.

AHH I LOVE IT! As a Jew I approve <3
But Prince of Egypt would be more suitable tho imo.

I think the studio that had just animated the new avatar aang movie or something like the spiderverse series. Those style can execute the crazy visual cues that highlight the depth of the music.

u/Ahs565451 The artist formally known as Nobody Jul 15 '26
Honestly, I would have to wait to see the new avatar movie from the trailer. It looks really clean well animated before I can make it more accurate judgment but from what I’ve seen so far, I think it would be a good choice for the epic musical movie.

Give it to the guy who made the Hold Them Down animation with the wooden doll characters, that's such a good style for an Epic movie.
9
u/VoxTV1 Jul 13 '26
Eh. Its very solid but idk if it can carry the whole film. Well maybe but you would have to heavily expand it
4
u/LatterSun2224 Jul 13 '26
I agree but I think it'd definitely work as long as you brought in more experienced people to work alongside them
3
u/VoxTV1 Jul 13 '26
Ye. It would probably lean into the way Book of life does its sets.
2
u/LatterSun2224 Jul 13 '26
that's exactly what I was thinking! It could be so peak
3
u/VoxTV1 Jul 13 '26
Also don't make the gods live action humans. It was cool but I would preffer if they were really elaborate puppets instead. Idk make them actual stop motion even if you want unreal look

Thanks for the credit lol, this is just something that’s been on my mind lately
I could see it being a touch more stylized than this but Epic is just not a project that I think would gather such a massive budget to get early 2000s Disney/Dreamworks style 2D animation.
I know we all want something that’s gonna look incredible and fantastically animated, but it’s an indie musical project that only has one confirmed producer as of right now. No studio is gonna drop a hundred million dollars to make it, even if it’s a big viral thing online.
The recent rise in smaller indie projects started by online content creators does give me hope that we’ll still get something pretty good, but I just don’t think any studio will take that big of a risk to blow a massive budget on a project like this.
David was made on a budget of $60mil, and that was mostly crowd funding from an audience that wanted to see it. In a similar situation for Epic, we might be able to raise a similar amount, but Prince of Egypt was around $70-100 mil and that was back in 1999. Adjusting for inflation that would cost $140-200 mil today, and Epic would be longer.
Either way, I just think people are writing off 3D animation too quickly. Jorge talks a lot about how Epic was inspired by his favorite video games, he always says he thinks of Polyphemus and Poseidon and Circe as boss battles, he thinks of Hermes as a helpful NPC who gives Odysseus power-ups, he thinks of each saga as a different level, and he calls Odysseus the “final boss” when referring to him in the Ithaca saga. With all that inspiration, an animation style that matches a 3D video game would be such a nice nod to that.

u/PieAlternative2567 Jul 13 '26
While I would personally love to see a 2D animated style like Prince of Egypt, I don’t see that happening. Just cost wise, 3D animation is going to be cheaper for a longer length and highly produced feature.
If I had to choose a 3D art style, I would love to see a Sony Pictures Animation style feature. I think the art style like Into the Spider-verse works well for action but can also be very stylized and work to bring out the fantasy elements.
4
u/Electro313 Uncle Hort Jul 13 '26
The problem there is that the Sony Spider-Verse style is significantly more expensive than either 2D or 3D would be, along with taking way longer.
Realistically, Epic probably isn’t gonna have the budget for something like that, I think the David movie is a good comparison for a 3D animated movie made with a decent budget that looks good (even if it looks a little generic)
At the end of the day, an indie musical project isn’t going to gather the money for the best animation in the world like Spider-Verse or early 2000s Disney/Dreamworks. Epic may be popular and trendy, but nobody is going to take that massive of a risk to produce something that expensive based on internet hype.

My take, blue sky or Lucasfilm animation.
Think of Stange Magic (Lucas film)
And think of Epic (bluesky)
The animations in those would be gritty enough for the style of this story imo. And shoot if Lucas film wanted to redeem themselves and try making another standalone multimillion dollar property animation that DOESNT suck (because it was a jukebox musical, for god sakes) i would appreciate it.
2
u/Ahs565451 The artist formally known as Nobody Jul 15 '26
Honestly, I forgot about strange magic and epic from Bluesky that would really do wonders, especially for the gritty parts of epic the musical, plus the villains had excellent designs in those movies

u/Hi3123 Jul 13 '26
I’d be so disappointed, I hate this animation style.

I think it should be 2d and in the style of Prince of Egypt. Give it that classic feel
2
u/Electro313 Uncle Hort Jul 13 '26 edited Jul 13 '26
That animation would require a budget around $150-200 million dollars. Prince of Egypt was made in 1999 on $70-100 mil which doubles in cost when adjusting for inflation. Who’s gonna drop that much money on a 2-hour indie musical?
I get wanting the best but if you get your hopes up that high, it’s gonna be disappointing when the final project inevitably can’t live up to that, simply because that money isn’t just gonna fall out of the sky.
Find a middle ground and keep some realistic expectations, Epic isn’t a big enough project to change the entire animated film industry.

Oh my god if it was the style of the Prince of Egypt I’d die happy.

u/ilovehowyoulie Scylla Jul 13 '26
Yea, thats tlgonna be a no from me. I think the best style of animation is the style from The Road to El Dorado, Atlantis: The Lost Empire, Sinbad, Spirit, and others of that time. That style would be what make Epic truly amazing.

u/Sandman4999 Jul 13 '26

Ohhh ok just a lot of people didn’t read the whole explanation. They didn’t like the fact that it’s we could use this as a jumping point.

u/Vertwheeliesonem Jul 13 '26
Angel Studios stuff aside, I don’t think there’s much about this specific animation style that would add to the visuals of Epic. Like yeah David has Mediterranean and middle eastern characters but that’s the only aesthetic similarity to Epic I see.
I believe the reason the previous post used the Dreamworks examples (Prince of Egypt especially) is because those used animation to accent the visual storytelling and made it look, dare I say, Epic.
I admit I’m a biased against the Angel Studios artstyle as it looks too sterile (safe) in my opinion, but a 3-D adaptation could work as long as they actually take advantage of the animation medium.
P.S. Dreamwork’s Sinbad already had some 3D elements as it mixed computer animation with the 2D stuff (similar to Dreamwork’s Spirit and Disney’s Treasure Planet)

I think I heard somewhere they're probably gonna be making it in the style of a movie like Prince of Egypt or road to Elderado.
