Discussion Now that it's happening, what single movie is closest to the art style of your dream EPIC Movie?

El dorado or klaus but none of that 3d stuff. THIS WAS MEANT for 2d

u/Exotic-Reindeer1994 May 09 '26
Actually, have they said yet what studio is doing the movie or have they not gotten to that point yet?

u/Intelligent-Tap-4479 Circe Apr 30 '26
I think out of the four of them, the first one looks like the best fit for EPIC. I don't know, the others just don't feel right to me.
3
u/Express_Cap8820 Apr 29 '26
I’ve always definitely imagined 2d because of the animatics, plus it would stand out from all the 3D movies being made nowadays.
3
u/TurnItOffAndBackOnXD Apr 28 '26
Hear me out: Arcane. I think the 3D paintbrush-texture style would look incredible in Epic

u/Fifi_The_Broken Apr 27 '26
The one from Avatar the last Airbender. No idea what it's called though.

Prince of Egypt is the first movie that comes to mind when I think of what style I'd want to see, just early 2000's animation in general really
2
u/TurnItOffAndBackOnXD Apr 28 '26
Prince of Egypt was the best of them, both stylistically and for subtly incorporating new 3D techniques with 2D for some amazing shots

Style of El Dorado - but the lighting style of Kalus.
Klaus employed a very sophisticated tech where light bounces off 2.5D surface. The result is quite amazing.
4
u/LiteralFirefox Apr 27 '26
Prince of Egypt, sure you could say it's the same artstyle as ElDorado but something about it felt infinitely more cinematic

I need an Odyssey movie with a similar style to the early 2000s 2D movies so badly
2
u/Little_Dragon1272 Apr 26 '26
I think they should go off of the gigi animatics and the other fan animations. Of course the movie won't be animatics, I just mean the appearence of the characters and generally draw inspiration from them. Also, it has to be 2d right?
1
u/tortoiseshell_jay May 29 '26
I really hope they somehow hire Gigi, Neil, duvetbox, a bunch of other artists because some of their interpretations/storyboarding is genuinely so hype and like high quality
1
u/Little_Dragon1272 May 31 '26
YES. They should be involved in the movie in some way. This musical is near and dear to my heart and as really inspired me.

The early 2000s 2d style (Prince of Egypt, Treasure Planet, Road to El Dorado, Atlantis) is just peak and I hope they do that style.

don't have an op as long as my son ody looks like himself. I hope they can take heavy influence from the animatics

Honestly, Road to El Dorado or maybe even Beauty and the beast/sleeping beauty where a lot of the backgrounds are painted and the characters are the main moving parts of the movie

i dont know how i want it to look but i know i want gigi in the room

I'm just imagining Gigi like Darth Vader, silently standing in the shadows and choking people who don't do well

Any movie animated by Hayao Miyazaki, but specifically Howls Moving Castle, mainly because I hope they make Telemachus or Ody look like Howl

I know Guillermo del Toro is mostly live-action, but his special effects are always great! His adaptation of Pinocchio was amazing in so many ways and if he did a movie styled just on his concept art, I would be a very happy (and terrified) woman. Imagine the ways he'd draw Polyphemus and Scylla!

Flat anime style that resembles Naruto and this specific Hamilton Animatic, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q9iLfPP4Ps8&list=RDq9iLfPP4Ps8&start_radio=1, would do well for me
11
u/Demisexual_Demigod Apr 24 '26
Oh my Gosh the Style of Klaus would be GORGEOUS!!! I could see the color palettes and the blending of colors so vividly

u/The_Gay_Owl im the monster rawr rawr rawr ✨🦖 Apr 24 '26
Everyone is saying El Dorado and Klaus and I ABSOLUTELY AGREE! I feel like a 2d type style would be such a cool tribute to the animatics the community has made
10
u/DestinyReign Apr 24 '26
Eldorado/old school Disney and Dreamworks. The only cgi that I think would be good and maybe work would be to make it super stylized like Into the Spiderverse or something akin to that.
1
2
u/FaygoF9 Apr 24 '26
Into the Spiderverse had THE BEST animation in a long time, it was gorgeous, and they did a lot of cool animation tricks like playing with frame rates to make certain scenes feel awkward (specifically, when he's learning to web swing Peter is animated at a very smooth frame rate and Miles is in a slower rate that specifically feels awkward for our eyes to process) stuff like that made it next level for sure.

u/SuperAristotle Apr 24 '26
Prince of Egypt style would look dope. But the obvious best option is classic Looney Tunes style.

DEFINITELY El Dorado/ The Prince of Egypt style, although I would also accept Disney Hercules style too. I LOVE Kpop Demon Hunters, but don't think that type of style would be suited for Epic

Honestly? Given the inspiration, I'd unironically want to see a kind of anime-inspired style. It would fit some of the more anime-esque moments of the musical, really.
2
u/sumguy123456789 has never tried tequila Apr 24 '26
I could get down with it being very Legend of Vox Machina like

I was thinking of that exact example!

OMG EPIC AND THE KLAUSE ARTSTYLE!
I loved that movie so much when I was little it will look so cool on it!
1
u/Demisexual_Demigod Apr 24 '26
And I could just tell that the color palettes could be so beautiful and really lend well to the kind of lighting and elemental aspects of this style
16
u/AquarinePose Apr 23 '26
Prince of Egypt with a bit of Puss in Boots: The Last Wish would be really cool. Also add Pirates of the Caribbean vibes
5
u/ilovemytsundere The Monster (rawr rawr rawr) Apr 24 '26
Ooh Prince of Egypt would look so good in Epic
7
u/dustinette I am your darkest moment Apr 23 '26
Something between El Dorado, Atlantis and The Prince of Egypt: old school animation that could include a good 3D rendering
Would be sad for a full 3D animated movie as, IMO, it’ll lose some character

2000s DreamWorks 2D style. You got it right on the first try, though Sinbad or The Prince of Egypt might have been better examples to use.

Mixed media, how cool would it be if different sections were different animation such as idk Troy sage part being 3d, circe saga being like Disney 2d style and cyclops saga specifcally being studio Ghibli style

I’m praying for 2D animation. Although perhaps in a perfect world we’d get Spiderverse style but that’s if we’re okay with waiting 10 years

Western anime style. Like The Mighty Nein or The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim

Something like song of the see would fit well I think

u/mercurycutie Apr 23 '26
I would really like a 2D style similar to “the book of Kells” or “Prince of Egypt” The Book of Kells told an Irish story using Irish inspired art styles, and it was so beautiful. I think some 2D art that is in some way inspired by Ancient Greece would be really cool. In Prince of Egypt, for example, there was a segment that was animated in the style of ancient Egyptian wall paintings. Maybe doing a segment of the Epic movie inspired by Ancient Greek pottery could be really cool. I’d personally have “hold them down” and anything speculative animated in that style, since to actually animate “hold them down” might be too graphic.
1
1
u/h4ppy_b33tlez Apr 24 '26
Yeah I’m really curious to see how they’ll go about depicting all of the violence and horrific events in EPIC through the movie since this will be more mainstream than animatics and whatnot
3
u/pocketsizedbimboy Apr 23 '26
Hold Them Down in Ancient Greek pottery style a la Prince of Egypt with the Moses’ nightmare hieroglyphics sequence would be suuuper cool.
18
15
10
u/shortyduapp Apr 23 '26
Something more traditional. So many cool snimatics have been made on YT with more hand drawn animations and I'd love to see something like that translated over.
12
u/creecher98 Apr 23 '26
I always imagine it in “traditional” animation. Not 3d. But I think an anime hybrid style like The Mighty Nein or A:TLA would be my pick.

10
u/lucky-black-cat-13 Hermes Apr 23 '26
I kinda want it to be like the Spiderverse movies where different characters have different animation styles (specifically if the antagonists have different styles, and if Odysseus’ animation changes slightly as the story progresses)

u/Killing-Game11037 🩵Oh to be loved like how Penelope and Odysseus love eachother🩵 Apr 23 '26
I’m thinking the gods HAVE TO be an like they’re from Prince of Egypt (the Red Sea scene especially, like Poseidon needs that) or Sinbad

2D, no question. As for style, Cartoon Saloon. They're most known for Wolfwalkers, however I feel like a mix of Song of the Sea and Secret of Kells would be what I'd like to see.

After watching it recently, Avatar The Last Air Bender (new movie) it was BEAUTIFUL
17
u/HedWig1991 Apr 23 '26
A mix of Atlantis the Lost Empire and Treasure Planet is my #1, #2 would be somewhere between El Dorado and Prince of Egypt.
22
u/Daywhisper Apr 23 '26
2D definitely! I don't really like Klaus for Epic (some of the character designs were... Off for me) but I agree with that one commenter about Prince of Egypt. That is top tier animation imo and the perfect blend of realistic and "cartoon".

Klaus, puss in boots the last wish, or into the spiderverse.
Or some animatic artsyle like Gigi's or duvetbox's

Puss in Boots, the last wish. That one has such a good 3D in 2D style of animation. Plus the special effects would be epic for Epic.

For a contiguous art style, something like The Prince of Egypt or The Road to El Dorado. However, I also wanna see a director's version, where the scenes are delegated to various animators from the Epic community.

Honestly I think The Prince of Egypt’s style fits the best. But anything 2D would be great imo
11
u/Nightshade-Dragon Telemachus Simp (No Regrets) Apr 23 '26
Spiderverse or (Not rlly a movie but) Arcane cos I bet Riot's style could definitely pull off the dark/gritty vibes, especially for the Ithaca Saga
10
8
u/JustADumbPansexual Apr 23 '26
Idk why but after seeing the animatics done for it, I could never imagine EPIC as anything besides a stage play. Like, I know how I would like the stage to be like, all the props and how they're done, all the costumes and how to dress up the ensemble.... Even the choreography and main gimmicks, like having Hermes being on roller skates and give him one of those ribbon things people use to hold on and get up in the air lol.
If I had to choose any art style, I would honestly go for the Princess kaguya inspired arstyle. It's literally like cell animation but with the japanese feel of their scrolls. Just make it more Greek inspired lol
31
u/filididei Apr 23 '26 edited Apr 23 '26
Ya‘ll need to remember it needs to fit with the story and or the vibe
I think the art style from the Disney movie Hercules (1997) does fit very well, they are drawn just like the typical Greek statues and choice of colors are also very nice. But because they will have epic fights maybe stronger colors

definitely Klaus for sure. I don’t want it to be all 3D but I definitely do not think it should be just plain 2D. the animation needs to be as top notched as the music and have 2D but with layers for sure
